IBM staffer posts pics on Facebook, loses benefits

According to the Associated Press, Blanchard, a 29-year-old IBM employee from Bromont, Quebec, was suffering from depression and took time away from work, relying on sick-leave benefits from her insurer, Manulife Financial.

The monthly payments were suddenly halted. When she called Manulife to ask why, she says she was told that it had espied photos on her Facebook page that showed her cheerful. Ergo, the argument allegedly went, she was able to work. Which led to the second ergo: no more payments.

Los Angeles County's Station Fire visible from space

Southern California's Station Fire, now more than a week old, is nearing 150,000 acres in size. The blaze, as pictured above by NASA's Terra satellite yesterday, is better contained than it was Sunday, when Terra passed overhead and photographed dramatic plumes of smoke rising into the sky. But the fire is far from tamed. The smoke from the Station Fire is visible in the center of the photograph, in the mountains just north of Los Angeles, as a gray haze among the white clouds.

In the Evangelical Lutheran Church elections of 1932, so-called "German Christians" won two-thirds of the vote -- and later praised the fight "against the political and spiritual influence of the Jewish race."

During the Rwandan genocide, writes Timothy Longman, "Numerous priests, pastors, nuns, brothers, catechists and Catholic and Protestant lay leaders supported, participated in, or helped to organize the killings." Two Benedictine nuns collaborated with Hutu militias in the murder of 7,000 people just outside their convent grounds. A priest participated in the burning and bulldozing of a church with 2,000 men, women and children inside.
