After more than 30 years, space scientists may have resolved one of the greatest enigmas in the solar system: why does Mars have two faces?

A paper appearing in the latest edition of Nature suggests the planet's Janus-like nature was caused by an impact with a Pluto-sized rock.

The topography of the southern hemisphere is more 'chaotic' compared to the smoother north

If you want to see the offspring of extraterrestrial interference in Earth evolution, you don't have to break into the X-files or start watching late night crazy-person public access. You could be looking at one in the mirror.

Early in Earth's history the surface suffered a heavy hail of meteorites. This is usually bad news for any lifeforms in the vicinity (if you don't believe me, just ask a velociraptor), but since even DNA was only a gleam in the ocean's eye at the time the space-rocks weren't a setback - in fact, they may have delivered vital ingredients to the rich pre-life soup on the surface.

A collaboration between various US and European institutes has proven the presence of vital nucleobases in the Murchison meteorite, an extraterrestrial rock fragment which impacted Earth in 1969.

These bases are unquestionably alien - for one, the rock-chemicals are equally left and right "handed"

I've been studying software projects for a while now. Not the programming, but the people -- the way they interact with each other through collaboration and communication. My investigations have always been visual: I've built applications that create pictures of what is happening within software projects. But they have always had a rigid structure to them. Organic information visualization, coined by Ben Fry, is a different approach to information visualization. It eschews traditional data confinement in space and lets the elements play together in freeform and unpredictable ways.

This visualization, called code_swarm, shows the history of commits in a software project. A commit happens when a developer makes changes to the code or documents and transfers them into the central project repository

Aussie astronomers find 'baby' supernova

An object thought to a faraway galaxy is actually the youngest and brightest supernova remnant in the Milky Way, according to a new study.

The team led, by Dr Bryan Gaensler from the University of Sydney, published their findings in the latest edition of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The object, known as G350.1-0.3, was first discovered in the 1980s, but its irregular shape led astronomers to believe it was a background galaxy.

The team used data from the European Space Agency's orbiting x-ray observatory XMM-Newton to analyse the object.

When they examined G350.1-0.3 they concluded it is an irregularly-shaped supernova remnant.

To explain its shape, the team looked at radio surveys and discovered that G350.1-0.3 had exploded next to a dense cloud of gas about 15,000 light years from earth.

"The large cloud explains why it is such an unusual shape, because the shock wave is expanding into a very unhomogeneous environment," Tanna says.

A chance observation by scientists studying the atmosphere above an Australian military transmitter suggests a new way to combat the damaging effects of solar flares on orbiting satellites.

Solar flares disturb the magnetic field surrounding the earth and cause a build up of electrons, that can damage satellites orbiting the earth, says researcher Rory Gamble

of the University of Otago

research suggested radio waves could be used to dissipate this build up of charge, by discharging electrons into the atmospher

scientists always thought this would need to be done from space

"We were able to determine that this transmitter has a direct effect on the electrons in the radiation belts

[It caused

those electrons to crash into the top of the atmosphere and be removed from the radiation belts

specially-designed radio transmitters could be aimed towards to sky to dissipate the electrons, once a solar flare was detected.

An ambitious effort to determine whether Mars' arctic region once harboured life has begun with the successful landing of NASA's Phoenix probe near the red planet's north pole.

After a nine-month and 680 million-kilometre journey from Earth, Phoenix managed an almost perfect landing on a relatively rock-free, flat target area.

Phoenix was tearing along at 20,400 kilometres per hour as it entered the atmosphere. During the next seven minutes, a heat shield, parachute and fire thruster rockets slowed the craft to a gentle touchdown

"It's down, baby, it's down!," yelled a NASA flight controller, looking at signals from Mars showing that the Phoenix had landed at 9.53am today AEST (Sunday 25 May 23:53 UTC).

By late this afternoon, images were being relayed via the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex at Tidbinbilla.

There are plenty of artists beside Escher that represent multidimensional space, but he does a particularly good job of it. The last stereogram at the bottom is the thinker. I ran out of characters. (you can always go to the site.) Stereograms can be annoying sometimes when you can't see what it is, and everyone else can. It can be like that, then suddenly one day a picture can jump out. It can help if you know what you're looking for. One problem with these may be looking too hard, when the eyes are probably better off relaxing.

It’s hard for anyone to say what music looks like, but a new mathematical approach sees classical music as cone-shaped and jazz as pyramid-like.

The connections between math and music are many, from the unproven Mozart effect (the idea that playing Mozart's music to children might improve their mathematical abilities) to the music of the spheres (the ancient belief that proportions in the movements of the planets could be viewed as a form of music). Now scientists have created a mathematical system for understanding music.

The team designed a geometrical technique for mapping out music in coordinate space. For music made of chords containing two notes, all musical possibilities take the shape of a Möbius strip, which basically looks like a twisted rubber band

The team found that the shape of possibilities using three-note chords is a three-dimensional ice cream cone, where types of chords, such as major chords and minor chords, are unique points on the cone.

An orbital x-ray telescope has found a chunk of matter in the universe whose existence had long been theorised but evidence for which had been lacking, researchers say.

The two clusters of galaxies Abell 222 and Abell 223 are connected by a filament of so-called warm-hot intergalactic medium, gas that could be part of the universe's missing baryonic matter

The discovery made by European Space Agency's XMM-Newton telescope is part of so-called baryonic matter, which makes up less than 5% of the cosmos

The new claim is based on the observation of a pair of distant galaxy clusters, called Abell 222 and Abell 223, located 2.3 billion light-years from Earth.
