A teenager is facing prosecution for using the word "cult" to describe the Church of Scientology.

The unnamed 15-year-old was served the summons by City of London police when he took part in a peaceful demonstration opposite the London headquarters of the controversial religion.

Officers confiscated a placard with the word "cult" on it from the youth, who is under 18, and a case file has been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service.

The incident happened during a protest against the Church of Scientology on May 10. Demonstrators from the anti-Scientology group, Anonymous, who were outside the church's £23m headquarters

were banned by police from describing Scientology as a cult by police because it was "abusive and insulting".

"Following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service some demonstrators were warned verbally and in writing that their signs breached section five of the Public Order Act.

A CPS spokesman said no specific advice was given to police regarding the boy's placard.

Michio Kaku doesn't know the meaning of the word "impossible".

for those of us not au fait with the process of speculating on the future of physics, he's split his impossibilities into three categories. Class I impossibilities are technologies which are impossible today, but don't violate the known laws of physics. Kaku reckons that these impossibilities – including things such as teleportation and psychokinesis – might be possible in some reduced form sometime within the next couple of hundred years.

Class II impossibilities such as time machines and hyperspace travel are at the very edge of our scientific understanding, and may take millions of years to become possible.

Class III impossibilities, are technologies which break the laws of physics as we know them.

The Italian government has declared a state of emergency at Pompeii in an effort to rescue one of the world's most important cultural treasures.

A Italian cabinet statement says it will appoint a special commissioner for Pompeii, the ancient Roman city buried by an eruption of the Vesuvius volcano in 79 AD and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bogus tour guides, illegal parking attendants and stray dogs also plague visitors.

2.5 million tourists visit Pompeii each year, making it one of Italy's most popular attractions, and many have expressed shock at the site's decay

"Every year at least 150 square metres of fresco and plaster work are lost for lack of maintenance," says Antonio Irlando, a regional councillor responsible for artistic heritage

"The same goes for stones: at least 3000 pieces every year end up disintegrating," he says.

Two-thirds of the 66 hectare town, home to some 13,000 people in the Roman era, have been uncovered since serious excavations began 260 years ago.

The great singer-songwriter and performer Billy Preston, the real "Fifth Beatle" has died after a long illness as a result of malignant hypertension that resulted in kidney failure and other complications. As a result of a medical insult he'd been in a deep coma since last November 21st, but was still struggling to recover. He died at Shea Scottsdale Hospital in Scottsdale, Arizona where he'd lived for the last couple of years.

Rest in peace, Billy. You deserve it.

Tunguska: 100 years of wondering

The rule of thumb is that a 100 metre asteroid equals a 100 mTon hydrogen bomb.

One hundred years ago, an explosion bigger than an atomic bomb blasted Tunguska, Siberia. We still don't know what caused it, but there are plenty of theories!

Early on the morning of June 30, 1908, a massive explosion rocked the Siberian wilderness flattening more than 2,000 square kilometres of forest.

Could Lake Cheko be an impact crater created by fallout from the explosion

Villagers 100 kilometres away from the Podkamennaya Tunguska river basin reported seeing a fireball in the sky, feeling intense heat, hearing loud thumps and being thrown off their feet.

The explosion lit up the sky as far away as London for several days.

the first expedition into the area led by Russian meteorite specialist Leonid Kulik found a region of scorched trees 50 km in diameter, but no crater.

Taken during the 1927 Leonid Kulik expedition, this photograph shows trees destroyed by the blast nearly 20 years before.

In 1991, Italian scientists still found evidence of fallen trees near the blast site

News analysis Australian farmers could have a huge impact on greenhouse emissions and the government needs to start seriously encouraging them to sequester carbon in their soils, say some experts.

The comments come as the Garnaut Climate Change Review delivers a draft report, which acknowledges changing the way we farm can have a big impact on our greenhouse emissions.

Professor Peter Grace of the Queensland University of Technology, an expert on agriculture and greenhouse emissions, estimates that in an ideal situation, more than 900 Megatonnes of CO2 equivalents could be sequestered per annum through improved pasture management.

It's a very significant amount of carbon

even if only 10% of this amount was achieved it would result in a significant reduction in Australia's carbon emissions.

John Connor of the Climate Institute says the government should give some signal to encourage farmers to sequester carbon in its Green Paper on emissions trading, due out on 16 July.
