clipper's remarks: The sound of a cave's echo when singing would have sounded good, and percussion instruments are good to help a few singers sing to the same beat. Art is another form of communication, They would have sang about things that they identified with, but theres something about people that makes them want to keep a record, to show others what has been going on. Stories can change, but art can be permanent. A way to show the children and descendants how they lived, and the cave paintings could showing how, and what to hunt.

The most popular musical events of the Stone Age might have taken place in torch-lit caves next to walls covered in art, according to new archaeological research in France.

The 12,000-year-old cave paintings appear to be placed at acoustically resonant locations, and researchers now theorise they may have been inspired by musical performances held in caves.

Professor Iegor Reznikoff of the University of Paris presented his findings at Acoustics08, a meeting jointly organised by the Acoustical Society of America, the European Acoustics Association and the Societe Francaise d'Acoustique.

"I am a specialist of the resonance of buildings and spaces, particularly of the resonance of Romanesque churches," Reznikoff says.

The latter finding suggests cave dwellers first scoped out caves for their musicality before any painting commenced.

His findings could help explain why bone flutes have been found near some caves containing the Stone Age art.

What is a surprise, is the number of colours that result.
Other metal compounds can have particular colours, such as the red of lead or iron oxide (rust), the blue of Copper nitrate, and while silver nitrate has been used in photography, This is the first time colours have been drawn from Gold and silver in this way. One of the reasons Gold is so expensive, apart from it's history, and the futures market, is because it has so many applications.

Researchers from New Zealand have created a rainbow of colours by adding nanoparticles of pure gold and silver to fine merino wool, intended for high-end, couture fashion designers.

They unveiled the first scarf dyed with gold nanoparticles this month at the Nano Science and Technology Institute convention in Boston.

"We want to create a fashion icon, like Louis Vutton or Gucci, where the logo will speak for itself," says James Johnston, the lead researcher from Victoria University in New Zealand.

"You could say that you are clothed in pure gold or silver," says Johnston.

Surprisingly, the dyed wool is not gold or silver in colour. When dyed with gold nanoparticles, wool, or just about any other fabric for that matter, ranges from purple to yellow and everything in between.

Silver nanoparticles create bright yellows, greens and oranges

researchers can even combine and mix colours to create new ones. Varying the amount of gold or silver nanoparticles determines the shade's intensity

Well, flat-screen LCD monitors don't burn in, so if you still have flying toasters or an endlessly looping slide show of your adorable niece and nephew, you're behind the times. When you're not sitting in front of your monitor it should be off off off.

clipper's remarks: Previous work identified a specific signal necessary for getting these fly egg cells to move; the problem is that this signal is “graded.” Like drops of ink spreading out on wet paper, this signal travels in between surrounding cells, gradually fading away as it moves outwards. But clear lines are required for pattern formation — there is no grey area between a zebra’s black and white stripes, between heart and liver cells and, in this case, between migrating cells and those that stay put.

How are graded signals converted to a clear move or stay signal? By examining flies containing mutations in different genes, the researchers discovered that one gene in particular, called apontic, is important for converting a graded signal.

The formation of patterns is a puzzle for mathematicians and biologists alike.

How does the delicate design of a butterfly’s wings come from a single fertilized egg?

How does pattern emerge out of no pattern?

“Pattern formation is a classic problem in embryology,” says Denise Montell, Ph.D., a professor of biological chemistry at Hopkins. “At some point, cells in an embryo must separate into those that will become heart cells, liver cells, blood cells and so on. Although this has been studied for years, there is still a lot we don’t understand.”

As an example of pattern formation, the researchers studied the process of how about six cells in the fruit fly distinguish themselves from neighboring cells and move from one location in the ovary to another during egg development.
