In the past decades, an average of 20 typhoons passed through the Philippines annually, but the number has increased to about 25-35 per year – possibly a result of global warming. After Tropical Storm Ondoy assailed Metro Manila with the worst flooding it has seen in 40 years, we should be more vigilant in preparing for the worst. Here is a checklist of things to gather for your own Typhoon Survival Kit.

1) drinking water: 1 gallon per person for 3-7 days

2) food for 3-7 days: non-perishable, instant or easy to prepare

3) first aid kit

4) personal hygiene items

5) beddings and towels in large garbage bags to prevent them from getting wet

6) clothes: placed in garbage bags as well

7) candles and matches

8) fully-charged cell phones and rechargeable lamps

9) radios (AM/FM) and flashlights; extra batteries

10) cash, ATM cards and credit cards

1) Prepare your own Typhoon Survival Kit such as this one: How to prepare a typhoon survival kit

2) Make sure that your car’s gas tank is filled in case you need to use it to evacuate from your home.

3) As much as possible, stay indoors to avoid being hit by flying debris because this can be extremely dangerous.

4) Monitor weather conditions and flood warnings via television and/or AM radio news updates. This will help you determine if you should remain in your home or evacuate.

5) Determine a “safe room” in your home where it would be best for your family to ride out the storm.

6) Talk about a family evacuation plan so that everybody knows where to go in case you need to leave your home because of flooding: a house of someone you know which is on higher ground, the nearest evacuation center or other safe public buildings.

For forty-five years, he swept floors, cleaned up trash, watered

did odd jobs at the University.

I met him when I was active with the UP Repertory Company, a theater
group based (then) at the third floor lobby of the Arts & Sciences
(AS) building. He would sweep and mop the hallway floors in silence,
venturing only a nod and a smile whenever I passed him.

Yan ang isasagot ko sa iyo kung 3 yrs ago mo pa yan tinanong. Nuong panahon na nagsusulat pa ako ng Mulawin, maaga na yung gumising ako ng 10am. Tanda ko pa nga, hanggat wala pang SIS, hindi pa ako babangon. Feeling ko madaling araw pa lang.

Noon yon. Pero ngayong mommy na ako, kahit pala ang napaka-imposibleng gawin tulad ng pagbangon ng maaga, pwede kong gawin. At kapag sinabi kong maaga, as in 5:30 am. Napaisip ako tungkol dito kaninang pinapasyal ko sa stroller si Aliya, 5:45am pa lang nun, nasa kalsada na kami at namamasyal sa village namin. Paano ba naman, gumising na siya ng 5:15 am at tinuturo na ang pinto. Nung kinarga ko, tinuturo ang bintana. Ibig sabihin, gusto niya nang lumabas. Haaay, kung pwede nga lang siyang ipasyal nang nakapikit ang mata ko, noh? Shift ko kasi kaninang magpasyal kay Aliya. Ilang araw na kasing si Romy ang bumabangon sa umaga. Kagabi, sabi ko sa kanya ako naman.

Sino’ng mag-aakalang pwede palang maging form of entertainment ang panonood ng tummy ko. Yep, tummy, as in tiyan. Nuong hindi pa ako buntis, akala ko pag sinabing sumisipa ang baby sa loob ng tummy ng isang buntis, yung buntis lang ang nakakaramdam nun. Walang ibang nakakaramdam, wala ring ibang nakakakita.

Haay, sobrang mali pala ako!

Pero kinabukasan, mga bandang 8:30 pa rin ng umaga, nakaramdam na naman ako ng pitik. Kinwento ko kay Romy, tuwang-tuwa kami. Pero kapag inaabangan niya at nilalapat ang kamay sa tiyan ko, wala naman siyang nararamdaman.

My daughter Aliya will be one month old tomorrow. The whole family is happy and grateful for her, she’s such a wonderful bundle of joy. She’s brought so much love and happiness to each member of the family like no one else has done before. She, too has totally changed our lives. People say one’s life will never be the same again once a baby is born to a family. Indeed, my life has totally changed, both in expected and unexpected ways.

Expected were the sleepless nights, and the baby sharing our family bed, and the change in shopping priorities and the endless diaper change and the date nights to be minimized. But the unexpected are the ones that really, totally are taking a toll on me now. Emotionally, spiritually, physically.

Apparently, the Bay Area has the most expensive real estate in the U.S. next to New York. It follows that the standard of living there is pretty high. After eating out a handful of times, I started to feel the pinch. Let me put it this way, each restaurant bill was comparable to a meal in Greenbelt 5.

On my second day in the States, my sister suggested we go to a Japanese place they love for the reasonable prices and good food. When m chicken katsu came, I had a hard time seeing the plates they came in because they were loaded with sides and an amazing amount of breaded chicken and rice. I moaned that we should’ve just split one order, but was appeased when my sister asked for containers so that we can take home our leftovers.

If it was all about attitude, I would've made the grade, given that I was able to ape my sister's Californian accent after spending just a few days with her. But by my own admission in my Facebook status, I knew that I made more grammatical mistakes in the month I was in the States than the whole of 2008 altogether.

This was embarrassing, given that I already won three awards for plays I wrote in English. But apparently, make me speak solely in that language and after a short while, I'd be a gonner. Same thing goes for me and speaking in straight Filipino because yes, I am one of those horrid, horrid creatures who use Taglish as a crutch in everyday life. But hey, I spend most of my professional life writing in Filipino, and I do exert extra effort to push aside my collegiala-speak and bring out the beauty of the language to my audience.

… It's the brand of the GPS that helped my sister navigate to unfamiliar territory. Mostly it did its job, but it had a tick: it didn't matter where we were headed, inevitably Tomtom made us end in a mall or shopping center.

First off, it took us to Burlingame for my sister's final gown fitting, where I quipped that much of what I saw of the States so far reminded me of Sta. Rosa, Laguna! I guess I was surprised because after the drama and anxiety of waiting for my visa interview for months, I landed in a place that felt normal and rather familiar. I wasn't sure I'd want to live here, but I knew I'd want to visit again.

In my continued quest to feel like a Bay Area native (and cutting back on parking costs, as per my sister), we took the bus from Alameda to San Francisco on the day that we were slated to watch the musical that made other musicals green with envy. My sister and I made sure we had comfortable shoes on because we had quite a walk ahead of us.

We eventually got to South of Market, and what else can two Pinay girls do in that area but go to Jollibee for a lunch of ispaghetti? My sister gamely posed beside posters of lumpiang shanghai before we buckled down to eat. I was surprised because I found that the San Francisco version of Jolly Spaghetti was better: it had more sauce and the cheese they sprinkled on top was tastier. But then, at their prices (it was about $4-5 for an order with a drink), they better serve quality food!
