World's oldest cat celebrates 125th birthday

And at 27 human years, Mischief is still living up to his name despite "slowing down a little", according to owners Chris and Donna Thorne.

He still has photographs of Mischief at just a few months old being cuddled at Christmas the same year.

Almost three decades later, he is still a vital part of the Thorne family, and is adored the couple's 20-month-old baby Skye.

She said that despite Mischief's advanced years, he still has a spring in his step.

"His name says it all," she said. "He may be 27 but he still manages to jump over the stair gate and he's round your ankles constantly for food.

"He's an indoor cat now, and he's losing big clumps of fur, but he's still going."

A spokesman from Guinness World Records said a ginger cat called Spike was the last feline to hold the title of UK's oldest cat but since he died in 2001, there had been no further record holder. He encouraged Mr and Mrs Thorne to get in contact with Guinness World Records.

It's Not a Tumor - Doctors Find Worm In Woman's Brain Instead

Doctors in Arizona thought a Phoenix-area woman had a possible brain tumor, but it turned out there was something else penetrating her brain – a worm.

Doctors removed the worm and don't believe Alvarez will have any lingering health problems. No one knows exactly where she picked up the worm –- doctors said worms can come from eating undercooked pork or spread by people who don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom, according to the report.

“It only takes one person who is spreading it constantly to get a lot of people exposed and some of those people are going to go on to develop this problem,” Nakaji said.

Alvarez, who is now healthy and has resumed normal activities such a playing ball with family in her backyard, said she hopes people learn this lesson from her story.

“Wash your hands, wash your hands,” she added.

Awesome Underwater Bridge

This bridge and tunnel goes under water to allow movement of ships. In order for ships to pass, this bridge is half under the water. You drive down in the water and then come out on the other side. Truly a marvelous piece of engineering! This bridge is between Sweden and Denmark. Picture taken from the side of Sweden.

Chain of Cascading Lakes Discovered Under Antarctica

A series of connected lakes has been discovered deep beneath glaciers in Antarctica that is speeding streams of polar ice into the sea, scientists announced yesterday.

The lakes appear to be filling and emptying rapidly as water cascades from one lake to another before eventually reaching the ocean.

The find is important, because scientists believe this water below the surface helps carry ice into the sea, ultimately contributing to a rise in sea levels.

"It acts as a lubricant, greasing the skids of the glacier's movement," one of the study authors, Robert Bindschadler of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, said yesterday at a press conference in San Francisco.

The team's finding, which may help scientists better understand how global warming will affect the world's ocean levels, appears in today's issue of the journal Science.

March 5, 2008—Six of one, half a dozen of another—it's all the same for this odd octopus.

Caretakers at a British aquarium recently discovered that one of its newest residents, an octopus named Henry, had six legs instead of the usual eight.

Workers at the Blackpool Sea Life Centre first noticed that Henry was—as it were—two feet short, as he was crawling up the wall of his glass tank.

Aquarium officials dubbed the creature a hexapus,

Henry will go on public display in about a month, and visitors will be able to see that he gets along just fine with what he has, officials added.

"He's a lovely little thing," an aquarium spokesperson told AFP.

Weird New Fish Discovered off Antarctica

February 19, 2008—This otherworldly creature was among a haul of strange new fish trawled from the bottom of the oceans of Antarctica.

The eelpout Pachycara cousinsi is one of six previously unknown deep-sea fishes caught at depths of 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) during a British research expedition to the remote Crozet Islands in the Indian Ocean between Antarctica and Africa.

Team member Nicola King of the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, recently announced the new species.

P. cousinsi is known from just a single, 1.35 foot (41 centimeter) long specimen caught during the 2005 to 2006 voyage. King named the fleshy-lipped species in honor of her fiancé, geophysicist Michael Cousins.

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” the marine biologist said.
