One more word out of either Councilor Rob Ford or Lindsay Luby, and David Miller is going to turn this car right around. Mssr Miller was prompted to scold both councilors yester day after the two adults, pictured, took to exchanging child-like taunts in chambers this past Tuesday. The spat began with some sort of pot hole complaint, and ended with an emotional Luby confronting Ford off the record.

It verbal jabs started when the weighty Ford called Luby a "waste of skin, a joke, a waste of time and a low-life." Luby, no lightweight in the name-calling department herself, fired back by calling Ford a "jerk," or his family a "bunch of jerks."

and pit the two bickering back and forth in a media scrum telling "your mama" jokes. For his part, Mayor Miller said that Ford must apologize,

the recent tantrum is "not acceptable" for city politics. Adding to his fatherly rhetoric, Miller might be wise to bring out "Mr Broom" for the next council outburst.

A nasal spray of a key brain hormone cures sleepiness in sleep-deprived monkeys. With no apparent side effects, the hormone might be a promising sleep-replacement drug.

In what sounds like a dream for millions of tired coffee drinkers, Darpa-funded scientists might have found a drug that will eliminate sleepiness.

A nasal spray of a key brain hormone cures sleepiness in sleep-deprived monkeys. With no apparent side effects, the hormone might be a promising sleep-replacement drug.

In what sounds like a dream for millions of tired coffee drinkers, Darpa-funded scientists might have found a drug that will eliminate sleepiness.

A nasal spray containing a naturally occurring brain hormone called orexin A reversed the effects of sleep deprivation in monkeys, allowing them to perform like well-rested monkeys on cognitive tests.

Orexin A is a promising candidate to become a "sleep replacement" drug.

The greenhouse effect runs wild in our planetary neighbour

Named by the Romans for the goddess of love but known since ancient times, Venus has fascinated astronomers, mariners and observers of the heavens. Depending on the time of year, Venus is either the first and brightest planet or star seen at night in the western sky, or the last seen in the morning in the eastern sky.

Its temperature and atmosphere also make the planet inhospitable to life. The surface temperature of the planet is 477 C, the hottest in the solar system, and its atmosphere is toxic, made up of 96 per cent carbon dioxide with clouds of sulphuric acid.

Venus is closer to the sun than any other planet save for Mercury.

Venus rotates slowly on its axis, with a day on the planet lasting 243 Earth days, or more time than the 224.7 Earth days it takes the planet to complete a rotation of the sun. Venus also rotates in the opposite direction than it orbits the sun

clipper's remarks: I grew up as a fundamentalist Xian X= Greek letter chi for Christ. I have read several of Tom Harpers books and have found him to be one of the most honest Anglican Priests I have ever met in book and person.

What we find now is that the literal interpretation of the Bible is producing a very dangerous culture, focused in the US where military culture and war are often seen as part and parcel of the religious right's political theology.

THE PAGAN CHRIST

There are 2.1 billion Christians on the planet – roughly one third of the entire human population. At the heart of their religion is the New Testament and the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. To Christianity, the written word is the glue that binds the faith of its followers.

Based on Tom Harpur’s national bestseller, The Pagan Christ examines these very questions. During his research, Harpur discovered that the New Testament is wholly based on Egyptian mythology, that Jesus Christ never lived, and that – indeed – the text was always meant to be read allegorically. It was the founders of the Church who duped the world into taking a literal approach to the scriptures. And, according to Harpur, this was their fatal error – and the very reason Christianity is struggling today.

So, what if it could be proven that Jesus never existed? What if there was evidence that every word of the New Testament

is based on myth and metaphor?

clipper's remarks: Robert Sawyer is so far ahead of most of the rest of contemporary Speculative Fiction writers you would have to travel FTL in order to catch up to him.
What is so striking about his works is the totally fresh thinking, and his willingness to ask hard questions about Life the Universe and Everything. Sorry the answer isn't 42 as once was humourously speculated.

My favourites are his Neanderthal Trilogy and his novel Calculating God.

He is subtle not pedantic, caring through his characters, and rigorous with his science background.
