Ethics office still awaiting leadership

The House of Representatives’ new Office of Congressional Ethics is supposed to be open for business as early as this week. There’s just one problem: Neither Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) nor Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) has nominated anyone to work for it.

Under a resolution approved by the House in March, the speaker and the minority leader are each required to nominate — with the concurrence of the other — three board members plus an alternate for the ethics office. Aides to the two leaders said Monday that Pelosi and Boehner have begun talks about their nominees, but it is not clear if they have started vetting the other side’s choices.

Although Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) — like most Republicans — opposed the creation of the ethics office, senior House GOP aides insist that the minority leader isn’t “filibustering” by declining to name board members.

That removed one of the few safeguards against Bush's warrantless wiretaps: the concern among service providers that they might be sued by customers for handing over constitutionally protected information without a warrant.

In short, the "Protect America Act" made warrantless surveillance legally cost free for a collaborating service provider, tilting the scales even further in favor of the government's spying powers.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claims that a key positive feature of the new wiretap "compromise" is that the bill reaffirms that the President must follow the law, even though the same bill virtually assures that no one will be held accountable for George W. Bush's violation of the earlier spying law.

In other words, in the guise of rejecting Bush's theories of an all-powerful presidency that is above the law, the Democratic leadership cleared the way for the President and his collaborators to evade punishment for defying the law.

they simply believed they could violate the law without consequence, under the radical theory that at a time of war -- even one as vaguely defined as the "war on terror" -- the President's powers trump all laws as well as the constitutional rights of citizens.

It’s bad enough watching the likes of Steny Hoyer, Rahm Emanuel and a disturbingly disoriented Nancy Pelosi eviscerate the Fourth Amendment, exempt their largest corporate contributors from the rule of law, and endorse the most radical aspects of the Bush lawbreaking regime. But it’s downright pathetic to see try to depict their behavior as some sort of bipartisan “compromise” whereby they won meaningful concessions:

But this absurd praise underscores what the Washington power structure means when they speak of “bipartisanship” — it means having the Republican Party demand something, and then having enough Democrats agree to it to ensure it passes in essentially undiluted form. An Ohio Democratic lawmaker and former presidential candidate has presented articles of impeachment against President George W. Bush to Congress.

Thirty-five articles were presented by Rep. Dennis Kucinich to the House of Representatives late Monday evening, airing live on C-SPAN.

"The House is not in order," said Kucinich to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), upon which Pelosi pounded her gavel.

"Resolved," Kucinich then began, "that President George W. Bush be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors, and that the following articles of impeachment be exhibited to the United States Senate. ...

(05-28) 20:17 PDT San Francisco -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she will step in if necessary to make sure the presidential nomination fight between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama does not reach the Democratic National Convention - though she believes it could be resolved as early as next week.

Pelosi predicted Wednesday that a presidential nominee will emerge in the week after the final Democratic primaries on June 3, but she said "I will step in" if there is no resolution by late June regarding the seating of delegates from Florida and Michigan, the two states that defied party rules by holding early primaries.

"Because we cannot take this fight to the convention," she said. "It must be over before then."

Pelosi said she is confident the Democratic National Committee's rules committee, which meets in Washington on Saturday, will resolve the issue of Florida and Michigan.

The White House on Tuesday denied a published report in Israel that said President Bush intends to attack Iran before the end of his term in January.

A story in the Jerusalem Post quoted a "senior official" there as saying that Bush plans to attack Iran in the coming months. The story says the unidentified official claimed that a "senior member" of Bush's traveling entourage made the statement about attacking Iran in a closed meeting. Bush was in Israel last week.

The article also says the unnamed Bush official said that Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney "were of the opinion that military action were called for."

When asked to comment on the Jerusalem Post report, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said: "You're talking about an allegation without a source that has been denied by the president. I think we can leave it at that."

As the President's term draws closer to an end, calls for his impeachment wither, and Pelosi is further off the hook. But my impeachment juices were rallied last night by Pelosi's acceptance of this architect of death.

SAN MARCOS, CA – Disillusioned but not discouraged, peace activist turned congressional candidate Cindy Sheehan last night took her fight against the Iraq war and the Washington establishment to Cal State San Marcos, where she received a standing ovation.

Sheehan, the mother of Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, who was killed in an ambush in Baghdad in 2004, spoke to a packed auditorium of 230 students, faculty and supporters. She urged them to make the country a better place.

“We need everybody working together,” Sheehan said as the audience applauded, cheered and muttered approval of her remarks.

“If I can't make a difference, at least I can try. I will go to my grave trying.”

Many peace activists, including the San Diego chapter of Veterans for Peace, were in the audience to support her.

Having made the mistake of confirming Michael Mukasey as US Attorney General, the Democrats again find their efforts to hold Republican government officials accountable for illegal and unethical behavior stonewalled by the Department of Justice (sic) and blocked by the brownshirt tactics for which the Bush Regime is now infamous.

The way matters stand in America today, the executive branch can falsely prosecute, frameup, and imprison members of Congress and governors of states at will, but itself cannot be held accountable to law.

Pelosi herself was instrumental in making the executive branch unaccountable to Congress or to law when she declared impeachment of Bush to be “off the table.” This declaration by the Speaker of the House has effectively released the Bush Regime from any accountability, just as the Enabling Act released Hitler from any accountability to the Reichstag, the German constitution, or statutory law.
