There’s just one problem: Neither Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) nor Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) has nominated anyone to work for it.

Under a resolution approved by the House in March, the speaker and the minority leader are each required to nominate — with the concurrence of the other — three board members plus an alternate for the ethics office. Aides to the two leaders said Monday that Pelosi and Boehner have begun talks about their nominees, but it is not clear if they have started vetting the other side’s choices.

Although Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) — like most Republicans — opposed the creation of the ethics office, senior House GOP aides insist that the minority leader isn’t “filibustering” by declining to name board members.

they will effectively prevent the office from starting any new investigations in this election cycle.

<clipSource>http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0708/11579.html</clipSource>

Democrats Have Legalized Bush's Crimes

clipped by: papananook
clipper's remarks: Beyond the breathtaking scope of this new authority, the Bush administration also snuck in a clause that granted forward-looking immunity from lawsuits to communications service providers that assisted the spying.

That removed one of the few safeguards against Bush's warrantless wiretaps: the concern among service providers that they might be sued by customers for handing over constitutionally protected information without a warrant.

In short, the "Protect America Act" made warrantless surveillance legally cost free for a collaborating service provider, tilting the scales even further in favor of the government's spying powers.

Clip Source: www.alternet.org

The Democratic leadership cleared the way for the president and his collaborators to evade punishment for defying the law.

Editor's note: You can read more about Obama backing a FISA "compromise" here.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claims that a key positive feature of the new wiretap "compromise" is that the bill reaffirms that the President must follow the law, even though the same bill virtually assures that no one will be held accountable for George W. Bush's violation of the earlier spying law.

In other words, in the guise of rejecting Bush's theories of an all-powerful presidency that is above the law, the Democratic leadership cleared the way for the President and his collaborators to evade punishment for defying the law.

they simply believed they could violate the law without consequence, under the radical theory that at a time of war -- even one as vaguely defined as the "war on terror" -- the President's powers trump all laws as well as the constitutional rights of citizens.

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/rights/88950/</clipSource>

A list of the Dems Capitulations...er, Compromises

clipped by: papananook
clipper's remarks: Shame on the Dems

Clip Source: www.commondreams.org

It’s bad enough watching the likes of Steny Hoyer, Rahm Emanuel and a disturbingly disoriented Nancy Pelosi eviscerate the Fourth Amendment, exempt their largest corporate contributors from the rule of law, and endorse the most radical aspects of the Bush lawbreaking regime. But it’s downright pathetic to see try to depict their behavior as some sort of bipartisan “compromise” whereby they won meaningful concessions:

But this absurd praise underscores what the Washington power structure means when they speak of “bipartisanship” — it means having the Republican Party demand something, and then having enough Democrats agree to it to ensure it passes in essentially undiluted form. In January, I compiled a list of the Great Bipartisan Compromises of the Bush era and demonstrated that they are characterized by one common attribute: namely, they are supported by almost all Republicans and then enough Democrats from a split caucus to ensure its passage. As I wrote:

<clipSource>http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/06/20/9770/</clipSource>

To Replace Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House

clipped by: papananook
clipper's remarks: “Impeachment, …not a productive use of the House’s time.” Hoyer was further heard to remark, “It’s come to mine and Speaker Pelosi’s attention that professional Wrestling may be fixed. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she will step in if necessary to make sure the presidential nomination fight between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama does not reach the Democratic National Convention - though she believes it could be resolved as early as next week.

Pelosi predicted Wednesday that a presidential nominee will emerge in the week after the final Democratic primaries on June 3, but she said "I will step in" if there is no resolution by late June regarding the seating of delegates from Florida and Michigan, the two states that defied party rules by holding early primaries.

"Because we cannot take this fight to the convention," she said. "It must be over before then."

Pelosi said she is confident the Democratic National Committee's rules committee, which meets in Washington on Saturday, will resolve the issue of Florida and Michigan.

<clipSource>http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/05/28/MNQE10V1UL.DTL&tsp=1</clipSource>

Stopping the Propaganda Pundits

clipped by: papananook
clipper's remarks: petition at link

Clip Source: action.firedoglake.com

We’re teaming up with some other groups like Freepress to send a letter to Congress asking them to initiate hearings on the Pentagon's propaganda pundit program.

Fill out the form below to sign the letter to Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Armed Service Committee Chair Ike Skelton, Senate Armed Service Committee Chair Carl Levin, and House Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs Chair John Tierney.

We write to you today on a matter of great national urgency.

On April 21, 2008, the New York Times exposed a quiet military campaign to infiltrate U.S. media with propaganda. According to the article, top Pentagon and Bush administration officials recruited dozens of military officers to serve as pro-war media pundits for major news media.

Many in Congress have called on the Pentagon and media to provide a full explanation. Among many other acts of accommodation, she was also secretly briefed, along with a few other members of Congress, on CIA torture practices in 2002, and in the spirit of bipartisan amorality saw no problem with it.

"This is a progressive, populist campaign. Every day that we exist and bring up these issues is a victory for us," said Sheehan, the grieving mom who became the public face of opposition to the war in Iraq.

Now, with a staff of two, she is turning her challenge to that war into a political campaign. To the extent that politics is about winning and losing, yes, hers is probably a lost cause. But I see it as something else. I see it as a clarion stand for principle and rallying point for all w

Clip Source: www.smirkingchimp.com

Why, for God's sake, does nothing change? The war goes on, the money flows, the blood flows, the lies stay exactly the same. Have you noticed? Have you ever wondered, with a stab of transcendent confusion, why a self-correcting rationality hasn't kicked in by now, why a saner awareness hasn't made itself evident in the macro-affairs of the nation by now?

Folks, we have a seriously dysfunctional situation on our hands, more pervasive, I fear, than most of us realize. Deep into Bush II, our government appears to have taken on a crack house dysfunctionality. The institutional checks and balances that Americans are so proud of -- including, of course, the watchdog media -- have been so compromised by the war-junkie administration they've served and enabled they have almost no objectivity left with which to challenge or counter it. And thus the national war addiction permeates every facet of governance, and the media's coverage thereof.

<clipSource>http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/14252</clipSource>

Sheehan challenges Pelosi for House seat

clipped by: papananook
clipper's remarks: Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said that Pelosi, too, is frustrated with the ongoing war in Iraq but believes that impeachment would be divisive and distract Congress from improving the lives of working families.
WTF? SAN MARCOS, CA – Disillusioned but not discouraged, peace activist turned congressional candidate Cindy Sheehan last night took her fight against the Iraq war and the Washington establishment to Cal State San Marcos, where she received a standing ovation.

Sheehan, the mother of Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, who was killed in an ambush in Baghdad in 2004, spoke to a packed auditorium of 230 students, faculty and supporters. She urged them to make the country a better place.

“We need everybody working together,” Sheehan said as the audience applauded, cheered and muttered approval of her remarks.

“If I can't make a difference, at least I can try. I will go to my grave trying.”

Many peace activists, including the San Diego chapter of Veterans for Peace, were in the audience to support her.

Friends,

I don't get to vote for President this primary season. I live in Michigan. The party leaders (both here and in D.C.) couldn't get their act together, and thus our votes will not be counted.

So, if you live in Pennsylvania, can you do me a favor? Will you please cast my vote -- and yours ...

Ms. Pelosi shouldn't have to get her butt kissed to do her job defending the Constitution!

Clip Source: www.opednews.com

Two weeks ago, the House took a bold step demanding accountability for the Bush/Cheney Administration by holding former White House Council Harriet Miers and White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten in Contempt of Congress for blatantly ignoring congressional subpoenas for over 8 months.

The Attorney General's letter, effectively claiming that members of the executive branch are immune from congressional subpoenas, calls for quick action.

Click HERE to watch my latest video discussing Mukasey's outrageous response.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Judiciary Chairman Conyers have smartly decided to pursue a civil lawsuit to force Bolton and Miers to appear before Congress. We should pursue a lawsuit – but I think we can do even more.

The House of Representatives must re-establish its legitimate rights as a co-equal branch of government. Congress cannot allow its power to be summarily ignored and justice delayed.

<clipSource>http://www.opednews.com/articles/genera_robert_w_080309_impeachment_update_3a_.htm</clipSource>

Pelosi, Congress Complicit in Destroying the Constitution

clipped by: papananook
clipper's remarks: Why impeachment never came about is beyond my comprehension.
