clipper's remarks: I know, y'all think I hate America...Not so, but I despise what the people of the USA has done in so many instances of genocidal hypocrisy...I cannot celebrate our Independence without seeing all the death and destruction we have brouht to the brown, red and yellow segments of Mankind. I'm thoroughly disgusted with 'Murrika today and especially of the last 8 years. Our collective karma is disastrous and the Empire will fall, just like all Empires do. The "Noble Experiment" in Democracy gets a big FAIL. Despite all the good we have done, the USA is a racist, war-loving, greedy, Earth-polluting, voracious nation. Pretty sad when you think about it, neh?

I just watched that excellent documentary, The Revolution, on PBS yesterday to see if they would come close to the truth, and they did. I was especially impressed with the segment on how Gen.George Washington wrote especially virulently racist orders to commit genocide on the Iroqouis nation during the fight vs. the British...The order was to obliterate every man, woman and child, and burn the villages of the Natives--a scorched earth policy that was carried out.
This is how our country began and despite the Constitution and all our high ideals, we have committed genocide all thru the 227 yr. history of the USA and before, from the first colonists all the way until Iraq. In the name of "Freedom", "Christian values" and all the other lies the USA brainwashes us with, the white power structure has hated people of color all along. What a sham. Happy 4th of July, fellow'Murrikans!

Senator Barack Obama said Thursday that he might “refine” his policies for Iraq after meeting with military commanders there later this summer. But hours later he held a second news conference to emphasize his commitment to the withdrawal of all combat troops from Iraq within 16 months of taking office.

His two statements in Fargo, N.D., reflected how the changing dynamics in Iraq have posed a challenge for Mr. Obama, who is trying to retain flexibility as violence declines there without abandoning a central promise of his campaign: that if elected, he would end the war.

His remarks came as Republicans — including his all-but-certain opponent this fall, Senator John McCain of Arizona — have been arguing that Mr. Obama would most likely change his position on the phased withdrawal. They suggest that with violence dropping in Iraq, bringing the troops home would risk erasing the fragile gains that have been made.

The evolving situation in Iraq has, in fact, tested both candidates.

No, Eric, we're not going to move. The view is spectacular, and just because a rude old whale decided to die next to it doesn't make it any less so. Stop whining, everyone! Mind over matter. It's a good adage to remember, kids. No matter what obstacle is in front of you, you can still enjoy yourself if you don't pay any attention to it. That's what we're going to do today.

Kids, I'm already worried about this sun. There's not a cloud in the sky, and they say the sun is at its most damaging in the late morning. We should move into the shade. Here, let's sit in front of the whale's belly. It casts a nice big shadow. What "tube thing," Joshua? Oh, that. Well, I suppose that the whale's a boy, and that's the thing it goes to the bathroom with. You have one of your own, Joshua, so you should know. Only yours isn't eight feet long, is it? No, honey, don't touch it!

An Indiana teacher who used a much lauded bestseller, The Freedom Writers Diary, to try to inspire under-performing high-school students has been suspended from her job without pay for 18 months.

The effective book ban by the school authorities in Perry Township has outraged teachers and education reformers.

The Writers Diary, a series of true stories written by inner-city teenagers, was put together by a teacher, Erin Gruwell, and has been celebrated as a model for transforming young lives. It was made into a film with Hilary Swank last year.

“If you read the whole book you will see how these inner-city students grow and change and become articulate, compassionate, educated young people who want to do something good in their lives despite the environment in which they were raised,” she told the Guardian. “I thought my students would very much relate to those kids.”

WASHINGTON - Nearly 40 years ago, the FBI was roundly criticized for investigating Americans without evidence they had broken any laws. Now, critics fear the FBI may be gearing up to do it again.Tentative Justice Department guidelines, to be released later this summer, would let agents investigate people whose backgrounds - and potentially their race or ethnicity - match the traits of terrorists.

Such profiling faintly echoes the FBI’s now-defunct COINTELPRO, an operation under Director J. Edgar Hoover in the 1950s and 1960s to monitor and disrupt groups with communist and socialist ties.

Before it was shut down in 1971, the domestic spying operation - formally known as Counterintelligence Programs - had expanded to include civil rights groups, anti-war activists, the Ku Klux Klan, state legislators and journalists.

“These programs resulted in the bureau, at times, effectively stepping out of its proper role as a law enforcement agency,” the FBI acknowledges on its Web site.

clipper's remarks: Under Japan's special permit whaling programs, in 2007, a total of 551 Antarctic minke whales were taken under the JARPA II program, while 207 common minke, 100 sei, 50 Bryde's and three sperm whales were taken under the JARPN II program in the North Pacific.

The issue of special permit whaling deeply divides the Commission and as in previous years, strong statements both in favor and against lethal research programs were made.

The Japanese delegation said it is "strongly convinced" that the current situation is undesirable for all members and that the IWC must be normalized.

"Japan commends and appreciates the tremendous efforts Chair-Hogarth has put in over the past year in order to once again make the IWC an effective organization that can fulfill its own mission, the conservation and management of whale resources," Japan said in a statement.

The strategy failed Thursday when Denmark insisted on a vote to increase by 10 the number of humpback whales Greenland whalers could kill as part of the country's aboriginal subsistence whaling program.

Droughts, heavy downpours, excessive heat, and intense hurricanes are likely to become more common as humans continue to increase concentrations of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, according to first comprehensive analysis of observed and projected changes in weather and climate extremes in North America.

The federal government's U.S. Climate Change Science Program and its Subcommittee on Global Change Research released the scientific assessment late last month.

The report is based on scientific evidence that a warming world will be accompanied by changes in the intensity, duration, frequency, and geographic extent of weather and climate extremes.

On his radio show Wednesday, Rush Limbaugh commented on the news of his astronomical new contract estimated at $400 million. Limbaugh told his audience, "I'm not retiring until every American agrees with me." The deal pays Limbaugh to keep dishing his views through 2016.

The New York Times has more on how Limbaugh's windfall stacks up against other conservative hosts.

Mr. Limbaugh is not the only radio star who is busy pumping his franchise. Sean Hannity, the country's No. 2 host according to Talkers Magazine, is in contract talks with his current syndication company, ABC Radio, as well as Premiere, for a potential three-way deal, according to two sources close to the negotiations. They requested anonymity because the deal had not been signed.

Glenn Beck, another popular host, signed a new contract with Premiere last year that will pay him $10 million a year through 2012.

Every day an average of four construction workers are killed as they go about building America.

When miners, firefighters and law enforcement officers are killed in the line of duty, their stories become news. We hold vigils and we mourn their loss publicly - as we most certainly should. Yet when construction workers are killed, their tragedy too often goes unnoticed, as if the cost of building America must be injury or death on the job

Construction work is dangerous, and those who do it understand the inherent risk of their occupation. However they should not be expected to deal with unnecessary and avoidable hazards. Unfortunately, that is exactly what many face because they lack sufficient power to protect themselves and the agency tasked with providing protection for them - the Occupational Safety and Health Administration - too often falls short.

While 8 percent of the U.S. workforce is employed in construction, construction workers suffer 22 percent of workplace fatalities.

GULFPORT, Miss. — John McCain engaged in a physical confrontation in 1987 with a left-wing Sandinista leader during a diplomatic meeting in Nicaragua, according to one of his colleagues, Sen. Thad Cochran, a Mississippi Republican.

Still, Cochran told the Sun Herald of Biloxi, Miss., on Monday that he'd witnessed a confrontation between McCain and a Sandinista leader that shocked him, in which McCain "got mad at the guy and he just reached over there and snatched him."

"The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine," Cochran told the Globe. "He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."

The two senators have since made peace. Cochran said McCain had included him on a recent campaign visit to Mississippi. He told the Sun Herald on Monday that McCain is the best man for the job.

But he drew wide national notice in January when he told The Boston Globe his judgment of his longtime Senate colleague McCain.

There are some things missing from this story like what does a gallon of fuel cost made from this method cost.

Also, one quarter of "the one quarter of the state of New Mexico" referred to is about 30,000 square miles.

On the other hand, assuming that this method really works, it's an infinitely better solution that turning corn or other food crops into fuel.

Meanwhile, the IWC’s Scientific Committee continued its important work on assessments of threats to whales from ship strikes, fisheries entanglements, and underwater noise generated by human technology, including energy company exploration, as well as from emerging and recurring diseases.

No End to the Killing

The biggest whale slaughter in the world will continue, as Japan kills nearly 17,000 Dall’s porpoises. Japan did not even respond to the plea from the United States and other nations at IWC to reduce its killing of the Dall’s to sustainable levels.

Japan’s “scientific” whaling programs, JARPA and JARPN II—barely disguised commercial whaling programs embattled by scandals over crew members’ embezzlement of whale meat and meaningless academic observations by scientists—will also continue. JARPA kills about 1,000 whales per year in the Southern Ocean and JARPN II kills approximately 200 more.

Greenland wants to take 10 humpback whales.
