No consequences for Bush Jr?

When Bill Clinton, "the man from Hope," took the White House one of the things he did not put on his agenda was a serious investigation into the vast criminal enterprise operated by George Bush, Sr. that went by the name Iran/Contra.

Bush Sr. who belonged in jail on many counts walked away scott free.

Since Clinton left the White House, it's obvious that he and Bush Sr. are the best of friends playing golf together and posing for numerous photo ops.

Is Obama going to go after the vast criminal enterprise Bush Jr. presided over.

The message is loud and clear. He will not.

What do you call the form of government where the chief executive can break serious laws repeatedly causing grave harm to the nation without consequences of any kind?

On the other hand, can Bush pardon himself in advance for murder? I don't think so.

It is entirely unclear just what North did to “corroborate” US military claims of Taliban deaths, but his efforts to bolster the military stance appear about to go down in the same flames that killed 90 Afghan civilians.

While doubtful, perhaps the US military should rethink their reliance on the fantastical stories of a known bullshit artist and pathological liar, someone who by all rights ought to be in prison.

The story of an American airstrike on an Afghan village on the night of August 21 keeps getting stranger. At first, the US military said that militants had been killed in the attack, then Afghan officials alleged that only civilians had died - over 80, including at least 50 children. The US military investigated and stuck by its story and then mobile phone video of dozens of civilian casualties, ostensibly from the strike, turned up.

Now, the US has dispatched a general to Afghanistan to look anew at the events surrounding the airstrike and re-appraise the military investigation’s conclusion.

But the story has taken a new turn - it appears the original investigation relied on the corroboration of an embedded journalist when it concluded that the airstrike had, after all, only hit militants. That journalist has now been revealed to have been former Iran/Contra conspirator and FOX correspondent Colonel Oliver North.

Amazingly, Bush Sr. completely insulated himself from any personal consequences regarding Iran-Contra. Like a good mafia don, he had layers and layers of loyal "button men" willing to shut up and take the fall for him.

His good friend Bill Clinton, who by many accounts protected the gun export and cocaine importation leg of this trade as it was conducted out of Mena, Arkansas, ran against Bush for president in 1992, won, and promptly discontinued all further investigation into the Iran-Contra affair.

If you want to take this a little deeper, the folks who were incinerated at Waco by Clinton and Janet Reno very early in Clinton's presidency, had a thriving business converting semi-automatic rifles to automatic ones. It's never been made clear who the customers for these weapons were, but if you look at a map, Waco, Texas is not that far from Mena, Arkansas.

While everyone’s looking at Iraq’s effect on American politics — and whether or not John McCain and Barack Obama are converging on a policy that combines a flexible timetable with a vague, and long-lasting, residual force — let’s take a look instead at Iraqi politics. The picture isn’t pretty.

Despite the Optimism of the Neocons, which has pushed mainstream media coverage to be increasingly flowery about Iraq’s political progress, in fact the country is poised to explode. Even before the November election. And for McCain and Obama, the problem is that Iran has many of the cards in its hands. The use of military bases in Iraq to project U.S. power into the region to carry out regime change in Iran and elsewhere had been an essential part of the neoconservative plan for invading Iraq from the beginning.

The Bush administration raised the objective of a long-term military presence in Iraq based on the "Korea model" last year at the height of the U.S. celebration of the pacification of the Sunni stronghold of Anbar province, which it viewed as sealing its victory in the war.

But the Iraqi demand for withdrawal makes it clear that the Bush administration was not really in control of events in Iraq, and that Shiite political opposition and Iranian diplomacy could trump U.S. military power.

Consequences

Bush continues to push for an attack on Iran.

He is goaded by the Israeli War Lobby, the "religious" right, and other assorted domestic fascists and lunatics.

Iran is not Iraq.

Iran is a bigger country, a better armed country and a much more socially cohesive country than Iraq ever was - or could be.

Iran is PERSIA, a society with thousands of years behind it. Iraq was a glued together set of random kingdoms.

Iran is a country that has the ability to fight back and fight back massively.

As in Iraq, the weapons of mass destruction claim is a total fraud - and yet to war we go.

McCain is all for it. He can't wait. Obama is being artfully vague about his intentions.

And then there's Bush and Cheney. They still have nearly six months left to put the final bullet in the back of America's head before they go.

I will never understand this fascination some Republican politicians have with joking about killing people. It must be something that appeals to the Republican electorate because both of the past two Republican Presidential nominees have done this. Then Governor and Presidential candidate George W. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned Iran on Thursday that the United States will not back down in the face of Iranian threats against Israel.

Iran answered hours later with another round of missile tests.

Iranian state television reported Thursday that the missiles, fired Wednesday and again overnight, demonstrated that the country can defend itself against an attack by Israel or the United States. The weapons included missiles launched from naval ships in the Persian Gulf, along with torpedoes and surface-to-surface missiles, the broadcast said.

Earlier Thursday, Rice closed her three-day European trip with words of warning: “We are sending a message to Iran that we will defend American interests and the interests of our allies.”

Such a missile defense system “will make it more difficult for Iran to threaten and ... say terrible things, because their missiles won’t work,” Rice said.
