The Bank Holiday of 1933

Over 9,000 banks failed in the US during the 1930s.

By 1933, over $140 billion in depositors' money went up in smoke. This was in an era when you could buy a luxury car for less than $1,000 and a mansion for $20,000.

When Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) first took office in 1993, his first act as President was to declare a "Bank Holiday," the closing of all banks throughout the nation.

Three interesting things about this talk:

1. It's coherent and detailed.

2. The government at the time seemed to have the capacity to rapidly evaluate the soundness of banks throughout the nation

3. The currency sent to replenish bank supply was, according to FDR, backed by sound assets.

Folks, by this this standard, we're in worse shape than in the 1930s.

Today we have idiots in the White House who can't string two sentences together that make sense; the government not only can't seem to examine banks, it doesn't seem to feel a responsibility to

These fucking idiots seek to ban a book that teaches not to burn books because characters in the book burn books. In my less noble moments, I entertain the idea that these fucking idiots should be banished from our land.

By the way, just to add to the irony, Ray Bradbury was often frustrated by the common interpretation Fahrenheit 451 as an anti-censorship manifesto. Bradbury’s intent was to warn against our excessive television consumption, which steers us away from books and numbs our brains.

As senators began a raucous argument over climate change legislation Monday, even its sponsors admitted their chances of passing the Climate Security Act this year are, at best, a long shot. But both supporters and opponents of the Senate bill were so eager for the fight over the issue that lawmakers voted 74-14 to begin debate on the chamber floor.

President Bush issued a veto threat Monday, warning that the bill to cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by two-thirds by 2050, S2191, could saddle the U.S. economy with huge costs. And Senate Republican leaders, who hope to play up those same concerns, asked for 30 hours of debate before any amendments can be offered.

In other words, they hope to slow-walk the bill to its almost certain demise.

But Democrats also see value in this week's clash: They believe the debate will increase the bill's chances for passage in the next Congress, and could force some vulnerable GOP senators to cast uncomfortable votes in an election year.

FBI wiretap cut off for unpaid bill

The Justice Department's inspector general faulted the FBI for poor handling of money used in undercover investigations, which it said made the agency vulnerable to theft and mishandled invoices.

It cited the case in which a wiretap under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which governs electronic spying in terrorism and intelligence cases, was disrupted due to an overdue bill.

"Late payments have resulted in telecommunications carriers actually disconnecting phone lines established to deliver surveillance results to the FBI, resulting in lost evidence, including an instance where delivery of intercept information required by a ... FISA order was halted due to untimely payment," the audit said.

The FBI acknowledged "widespread agreement" that its 1980s era accounting system was inadequate and said it was working to improve it. Continued...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Got some leftover drugs -- the kind that someone else might want to use, such as painkillers or stimulants? Wrap them up in used kitty litter or other pet droppings, the government advises.

The Food and Drug Administration recommends flushing some of the most dangerous ones down the toilet, including the strong, addictive painkillers oxycodone and fentanyl and stimulants such as methylphenidate.

But environmentalists worry about the effects on fish and amphibians.

"Mixing prescription drugs with an undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds or kitty litter, and putting them in impermeable, nondescript containers, such as empty cans or sealable bags, will further ensure the drugs are not diverted," it says.

"The U.S. government declares ferret poop to be an effective weapon against drug abuse," the group said in a statement.

This news delighted the American Ferret Association.

SAMHSA said the problem is no joke.

FBI Monitored Sales At Middle Eastern Grocery Stores
Congressional Quarterly is reporting that the FBI sifted through customer data collected by San Francisco-area grocery stores in 2005 and 2006, hoping that sales records of Middle Eastern food would lead to Iranian secret agents. The idea was that a spike in, say, falafel sales, combined with other data, would lead to Iranian agents in the region. The program was the brainchild of top FBI counterterrorism officials Phil Mudd and Willie Hulon. The datamining operation was eventually stopped after FBI officials determined it was possibly illegal to place someone on a terrorist list because of what they ate.

This month, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco gave the Navy the thumb's up to turn whales' innards into tapioca via sonar blasts off the California Coast by stating: "The safety of the whales must be weighed, and so must the safety of our warriors. And our country."

Oh, yeah, the Navy estimated that 466 permanent injuries to whales would occur.

Oh, yeah, that same week, Stanford University released a report stating that gray whale numbers are still dangerously low and a proposal for a South Atlantic whale sanctuary was defeated in the first vote at the International Whaling Commission's meeting this year.
