DENVER - A least three groups of protesters interrupted the beginning of Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s campaign speech at the University of Denver campus Tuesday morning.

His speech was billed as a foreign policy address.

Two minutes after he started his prepared speech, a protester with a large sign was escorted from the room. It read, “Iraq Vets Against The War.”

A few minutes later, a second group of hecklers started yelling and were escorted out. A few minutes after that, a third group started chanting, “No more war.” They held up a banner, which could not be read from the back of the room and they were also escorted out.

“I will never surrender in Iraq,” McCain said in response to the protesters. “Our American troops will come home with victory and with honor, and they are winning.”

The crowd gave him a standing ovation.

Back in the late 1930s, songwriter Harold Rome penned a satirical song "(When I Grow Up) The G-Man Song," wherein a barely pubescent protagonist sang: "Gee, but I'd like to be a G-Man and go Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! I'd be a brave gang-busting he-man and go Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! I'd put on disguises of all different sizes and would I win prizes for telling who spies is!"

Seventy very odd years later, our barely pubescent protagonist-in-chief wishes he could be fighting in the sinkhole known as Afghanistan because it would be "romantic."

Bush's "gee-whiz war is cool" comments came a week ago, when he was video conferencing troops on the ground in Afghanistan, the site of a military operation that, at best, can be viewed as half-assed. (Maybe less, in that Karzai's puppet government has tenuous control of only a third of the country.)

"It must be exciting for you - in some ways romantic, in some ways, you know, confronting danger. You're really making history, and thanks."

tidal wave of misery is engulfing Iraq—and it isn't the usual violence that Americans are accustomed to hearing about and tuning out. To be sure, it's rooted in that violence, but this tsunami of misery is social and economic in nature. It dislodges people from their jobs, sweeps them from their homes, tears them from their material possessions, and carries them off from families and communities. It leaves them stranded in hostile towns or foreign countries, with no anchor to resist the moment when the next wave of displacement sweeps over them.

The victims of this human tsunami are called refugees if they wash ashore outside the country or IDPs ("internally displaced persons") if their landing place is within Iraq's borders.

Bush's Clever Cognitive Dissonance

So, George W. Bush sees himself as the great defender of the U.S. Constitution.

To many Americans who have been aghast at Bush’s six-plus years of trampling the Constitution, such pronouncements might represent a textbook case of “cognitive dissonance,” a psychological term describing the uncomfortable tension when one’s stated principles are at odds with one’s actions.

For Bush, however, this divergence of words from behavior may be closer to the fable of the Emperor’s New Clothes, when the monarch strutted about in invisible garments while his terrified subjects kept quiet about his nakedness.

Still, Bush’s Nov. 15 speech talked glowingly of the constitutional “checks and balances” as a guard against tyranny.

But for the past six years, Bush has asserted his right as “unitary executive” to ignore any law that he chooses by asserting his "plenary" powers and attaching “signing statements.”

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Democratic-controlled U.S. House Wednesday approved a war-funding bill with a timeline for troop withdrawal from Iraq and substantially less funds to conduct the war than President Bush has requested.

The White House said in a statement the legislation "would only partially fund our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, but fully embolden our enemies ... These votes, like the dozens of previous failed votes, put the interests of radical interest groups ahead of the needs of our military and their mission."
