The Congress shall have Power

Article I, Section 8.
"The Congress shall have Power . . .
". . .
"To define and punish . . . Offenses against the Law of Nations;"

I've been looking at my Constitution again. It was all I could do to remember what the first ten amendments were about in high school.

What is the "Government"? We have always known it to be three branches, the legislative, executive and judicial. Recently, Cheney has informed us that he isn't part of the executive branch, so there is now a Cheney branch of government too. The "signing statements" Bush attaches to every piece of legislation that he signs, that says he doesn't have to follow the law he has just signed into law, shows that Bush thinks he is above the law, so he probably thinks he is above the usual government too. That is, "the commander guy".

Read your damn Constitution! How can you rely on a document you haven't read since high school?

Edwards: If Members of Congress Won't Give Americans a Healthcare Plan, I'll Take Away Theirs

Arguing that ordinary Americans deserve access to healthcare that's just as good as what members of Congress get is a devastatingly effective message and has long been a crowd-pleaser among progressives. Edwards told radio talker Ed Schultz, "There's no excuse for politicians in Washington to have heathcare, but America doesn't have healthcare, and I think we have to shake this place up a little bit. What we would do is we would submit legislation saying if universal healthcare is not passed by this summer, that the Congress and members of the administration would lose their healthcare coverage."

Some single-payer advocates have criticized the plan because, unlike Dennis Kucinich's call to establish a not-for-profit health system, Edwards' plan would leave the insurance industry in place to suck patients dry and add enormously to the nation's healthcare tab.

Only One Congress Member Gets It

For almost a year Congressman Dennis Kucinich has been saying that the Democratic leadership in Congress should end the occupation of Iraq by not bringing up for a vote any more bills to fund it. For all these months, he has been the only member of Congress willing to say this.

A recent poll offered people a choice of spending another $200 billion without conditions (13 percent of the country supported this), spending $200 billion but requiring that all troops be home within a year (19 percent), spending $50 billion and requiring that all troops be home in six months (14 percent), or requiring Bush to use existing funds to bring all troops home in six months (40 percent). One congress member represents 40 percent of Americans.

“The Administration needs to be called before Congress to see if Blackwater’s failures are provoking more conflict in Iraq,” Kucinich said.

“We shouldn’t have mercenaries in Iraq or any other war zone. Not only should the State Department launch a full and complete investigation into this incident, but Congress should also hold Blackwater accountable.

“Congress needs to examine whether the United States should even use security contractors in war zones. A thorough and comprehensive examination is needed to know the true implications of American security firms in Iraq.”
