Bush Administration ordered to quit stalling on polar bear listing

"The Endangered Species Act requires the decision to be based solely on science, and the science is absolutely unambiguous that the polar bear deserves protection."

The Bush Administration may choose to ignore this deadline, just as they have so many others. Still, the honorable Judge Wilken’s decision is a welcome victory in the fight to save the Arctic polar bear.

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken has ordered the Bush Administration to make a final decision about listing the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), a ruling that could finally end the administration’s deliberate stalling of the listing process while it sells off oil prospecting rights in the Chukchi Sea.

More than four months after a legally mandated January 9th deadline, the Bush Administration made a decision on April 17th: unfortunately, what they decided was that they needed to delay even longer. According to a Department of the Interior statement released at the time, 10 more weeks were needed to consider the polar bear listing, meaning there would be no final decision until June 30th, 2008.

the Bush administration was already in violation of the law. She ordered the administration to make a final listing decision by May 15th.

Hillary Clinton went on “This Week With George Stephanopoulos” incarnating her role as the first Democratic Rambo. The Clinton campaign seems to want to reduce the entire race to one element: the supposed masculinity gap. And so everything she does is all about assertion, combat and Alpha dog dominance.

A few questions in, Clinton rose from her chair and loomed over Stephanopoulos. The country hasn’t seen such a brazen display of attempted middle-aged physical intimidation since Al Gore took a walkabout on the debate stage with George Bush. It was like watching someone get elbowed in a dark alley by their homeroom teacher.

But her attempt to take over the show was nothing compared with her attempt to dominate the truth. For the first 30 minutes, she did not utter a single candid word, including, as Mary McCarthy would say, “and” and “the.”

HILLARY Clinton has continued to raise the populist rhetoric in a pitch to blue-collar votes, vowing on the eve of crucial Democrat primaries in two states to smash the OPEC "cartel".

But the past 48 hours have seen what many describe as a shameless populist pitch from Senator Clinton to seal the vote in Indiana, a state hit hard by the loss of manufacturing jobs.

Last year, Senator Clinton appeared on the cover of Fortune magazine under the heading "Why business loves Hillary" but now she's pitching to blue-collar voters by slamming Wall Street and lamenting how the working class "don't want the game rigged against us".

Yesterday, she inched up the rhetoric further, raising the unlikely possibility of trying to break up the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

"That's not a market. That's a monopoly," she said, saying she would use US anti-monopoly laws as well as the World Trade Organisation to take on OPEC.

NEW YORK - May 5 - Two weeks after a New York Times story (4/20/08) revealed a Pentagon propaganda campaign that had been feeding talking points to TV military analysts, many of whom also had ties to military contractors, the cable and broadcast networks that employed these analysts have almost entirely failed to report this crucial news story. Fox has even continued to feature commentary by two Pentagon-affiliated ex-generals without disclosing their conflicts of interest.

This is nothing new to Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation and a former Air Force judge advocate general who also served in the Rea-gan administration. Weinstein says that he has collected nearly 8,000 complaints, mostly from Christian members of the military tired of being force-fed a narrow brand of evangelical fundamentalism.

Weinstein, who co-wrote the book With God on Our Side: One Man’s War Against an Evangelical Coup in America’s Military, has documented how the ranks of our military have been infiltrated by members of the Officers’ Christian Fellowship and other similar organizations. On its Web site, the OCF makes no secret of its mission, which is to ”raise up a godly military” by enlisting ”ambassadors for Christ in uniform.”

Maybe the reason the misperception persists that there are no atheists in foxholes is that nonbelievers must either shut up about their views or be hounded out of the military.

The state Legislature is looking to hire a few good polar bear scientists. The conclusions have already been agreed upon — researchers just have to fill in the science part.

A $2 million program funded with little debate by the Legislature last month calls for using state money to fund an “academic based” conference that highlights contrarian scientific research on global warming. Legislators hope to undermine the public perception of a widespread consensus among polar bear researchers that warming global temperatures and melting Arctic ice threaten the polar bears’ survival.

Republican legislative leaders say a federal decision to declare the polar bears “threatened” by climate change would have troubling effects on Arctic oil development and the state’s economic future.

The $2 million is also to be used for a national public relations campaign to promote the findings of the conference.

A sightseeing boat passes by a whirlpool in the Seto Inland Sea in Tokushima Prefecture on Monday. The whirlpools are created by the ebb and flow of currents in Naruto Strait and vortexes can reach up to 20 meters in diameter, swirling at a velocity of 20 kilometers per hour.

I`ve been there. It is boring.

The bad news is that as markets stabilize, chances for fundamental financial reform may be slipping away. As a result, the next crisis will probably be worse than this one.

After the financial crisis that ushered in the Great Depression, New Deal reformers regulated the banking system, with the goal of protecting the economy from future crises. The new system worked well for half a century.

We now know that things that aren’t called banks can nonetheless generate banking crises, and that the Fed needs to carry out bank-type rescues on their behalf. It follows that hedge funds, special investment vehicles and so on need bank-type regulation. In particular, they need to be required to have adequate capital.

Fed won’t have enough duct tape to hold things together.
