Anyone who cares about where their fish come from - and this should mean anyone who wants to go on eating them - should take two tools when they visit the fishmonger. One is the handy guidance provided by the Marine Conservation Society, Fish to Avoid and Fish to Eat (the latter is still the longer); the other is a ruler. My ruler is the type handed out to commercial fishermen by the international advisory body, Incofish, and has pictures of key species with marks indicating when they can be considered mature

China considers buying land overseas to secure food supply: report. “The Chinese government may encourage domestic companies to buy farmland abroad, particularly in Africa and South America, to help guarantee food security... Citing an official close to the deliberations, the newspaper said the proposal was likely to be adopted. If approved, however, it could face intense international opposition because of surging global food prices and deforestation fears...”

World Bank Controlling Global Warming Spending?

Longtime environmental activists know that the World Bank's investments have regularly gone toward projects that damage the environment, emit major amounts of greenhouse gas pollution, and negatively impact communities and human rights in the Global South. Now it wants to be the arbiter of huge pots of money intended to tackle global warming.

Friends of the Earth has documented how the World Bank promotes extractive industries and fossil fuels, shortchanges the poor while placing their ecosystems at great risk, focuses almost exclusively on corporate aims through its private investment arm, and has coordinated with the world's richest nations to invest upwards of $3 billion in new greenhouse gas producing projects.

Friends of the Earth believes that the World Bank should not be in control of this money. Help stop the World Bank from setting up these climate investment funds.

Right whales are among the rarest of all marine mammal species. North Atlantic right whales tend to be black with white undersides and lack the typical dorsal fin that most whales have. They have large heads, broad backs, paddle-like flippers and a curved lower lip resembling a frown. The varying patterns of rough patches of skin called callosities found on their bodies are marks of identification that aid scientists to track different individuals. Rather than teeth, right whales have baleen plates in their mouths. These help the whales to filter small zooplankton and krill from the water.

Could Dwight Schrute be just the man John McCain needs to help him win the White House? During an appearance on The Daily Show, the presumptive Republican nominee joked about naming the character from NBC's The Office as his running mate.

"You heard it hear first: Dwight Schrute," McCain said of the brown-nosing sycophant played by Rainn Wilson. "Doesn't he do a great job for Michael Scott?"

• Jon Stewart questioned McCain on whether President Bush was a bigger liability for his campaign than Rev. Jeremiah Wright is for Obama. Calling Bush a "religious zealot," Stewart asked McCain whether he would take the opportunity to repudiate and denounce him. No one knows for sure, but it's believed that as much as 40% of the military budget goes to private contractors including private armies.

There are thousands of private mercenaries operating on behalf of the US in Iraq and elsewhere around the world. Nearly 1,000 have been killed in Iraq alone, but their casualties are not counted. Nor has Congress been able to discover exactly how many mercenaries the US employs there.

One of these firms, Blackwater USA, a big supporter of George Bush, is now deploying in the US. They were present in New Orleans after the levee collapses.
