Psst! George Bush has a secret.

While you Democrats are pounding each other to a pulp in Pennsylvania, the President has snuck back down to New Orleans for a meeting of the NAFTA Three: the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of Mexico.

You're not supposed to know that - for two reasons:

First, the summit planned for the N.O. two years back was meant to showcase the rebuilt Big Easy, a monument to can-do Bush-o-nomics. Well, it is a monument to Bush's leadership: The city still looks like Dresden 1946, with over half the original residents living in toxic trailers or wandering lost and broke in America.

The second reason Bush has kept this major summit a virtual secret is its real agenda. More important, the agenda-makers, the guys who called the meeting, must remain as far out of camera range as possible: The North American Competitiveness Council.

If George W. Bush now believes Saddam "wouldn't let [UN inspectors] in," then it is self-evident that he has simply lost touch with reality. In plain English, Bush has gone mad.

This is not the first time Bush has exhibited symptoms of insanity. On Dec. 4, 2001 and Jan. 5, 2002, Bush told audiences he saw the first plane hit the World Trade Center on TV before he entered the classroom. But he couldn't have seen it; nobody saw it live on TV.

"God told me to strike at al Qaeda and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did..."

And on 7-3-03, Bush urged Iraqi fighters who want to kill Americans to "bring them on" - a reckless remark that endangered the lives of American soldiers.

George Bush is bullying Congress to give him $102 billion more to continue the disastrous occupation of Iraq into 2009 and beyond.

Bush's Iraq disaster has already cost American families the loss of 4,000 soldiers and cost American taxpayers $562 billion, and could cost $3 trillion if it continues.

The occupation of Iraq has greatly increased Al Qaeda terrorism worldwide, devastated the morale of American troops through repeated deployments and lowered recruiting standards, increased oil prices to $110 per barrel, and pushed the U.S. economy into a recession.

George Bush is defying the will of the American people, who elected a Democratic Congress in 2006 to end the occupation. Polls consistently show over 60% of Americans disapprove of the occupation, and over 70% of Iraqis want us to leave.

If Bush rejects all Democratic plans to bring our troops home, Congress must simply refuse to provide any more funds.

Protesters greet McCain during Greenwich visit

With that in mind, Mr. McCain took a break from the campaign trail last Wednesday to visit Belle Haven for a private fund-raiser. Tickets cost $2,300 a person, and interaction with Mr. McCain at the reception, which was held at the Belle Haven Club, cost an extra $1,000. While some happily paid for the opportunity to rub elbows with the Republican nominee, the greeting he got outside wasn’t all friendly.

Mr. McCain’s motorcade was greeted by close to 30 labor and anti-war protesters gathered outside Belle Haven, a gated community. The protesters, who decried the senator’s support for continuing the war in Iraq and his opposition to universal health care, carried signs and shouted out, “Hey! Hey! What do you say? How about you raise our pay!” and “What do we want? Peace, health care and jobs!”

SAN MARCOS, CA – Disillusioned but not discouraged, peace activist turned congressional candidate Cindy Sheehan last night took her fight against the Iraq war and the Washington establishment to Cal State San Marcos, where she received a standing ovation.

Sheehan, the mother of Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, who was killed in an ambush in Baghdad in 2004, spoke to a packed auditorium of 230 students, faculty and supporters. She urged them to make the country a better place.

“We need everybody working together,” Sheehan said as the audience applauded, cheered and muttered approval of her remarks.

“If I can't make a difference, at least I can try. I will go to my grave trying.”

Many peace activists, including the San Diego chapter of Veterans for Peace, were in the audience to support her.

Sheehan criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, for not taking steps to impeach President Bush, who she said misled the country into a protracted conflict with Iraq and condoned the torture

WASHINGTON - Roughly one in every five U.S. troops who have survived the bombs and other dangers of Iraq and Afghanistan now suffers from major depression or post-traumatic stress, an independent study said Thursday. It estimated the toll at 300,000 or more.

As many or more report possible brain injuries from explosions or other head wounds, said the study, the first major survey from outside the government.

Only about half of those with mental health problems have sought treatment. Even fewer of those with head injuries have seen doctors.

"They're helping us to raise the visibility and the attention that's needed by the American public at large," said Schoomaker, a lieutenant general. "They are making this a national debate."

Nineteen percent — or an estimated 320,000 — may have suffered head injuries, the study calculated. Those range from mild concussions to severe, penetrating head wounds.

Army: Desertion up 80 percent since start of Iraq War

A Fort Lewis soldier who reportedly deserted his unit in July returned to the Army post this week following his arrest at a skating rink in his hometown in Louisiana.

Pfc. Steven J. Arceneaux, 28, is back on duty with his unit as his chain of command decides whether to punish him. Possible sanctions include loss of pay, a demotion, a dishonorable discharge or jail time.

His arrest comes as the number of active-duty soldiers who have deserted the Army has increased 80 percent since the start of the Iraq War five years ago, according to the Army. The figure represents less than 1 percent of its active-duty force.

"There are things that happened that no one really knows about, but I'm just going to leave it at that," he said, according to the report posted on the Web site of KTBS-TV in Shreveport, La.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice mocked anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr as a coward on Sunday, hours after the radical leader threatened to declare war unless U.S. and Iraqi forces end a military crackdown on his followers.

Rice, in the Iraqi capital to tout security gains and what she calls an emerging political consensus, said al-Sadr is content to issue threats and edicts from the safety of Iran, where he is studying. Al-Sadr heads an unruly militia that was the main target of an Iraqi government assault in the oil-rich city of Basra last month, and his future role as a spoiler is an open question.

“I know he’s sitting in Iran,” Rice said dismissively, when asked about al-Sadr’s latest threat to lift a self-imposed cease-fire with government and U.S. forces. “I guess it’s all-out war for anybody but him,” Rice said. “I guess that’s the message; his followers can go to their deaths and he’s in Iran.”
