No War, No Warming, Rise Up!

For months a movement has been developing that consciously and intentionally links the related issues of the war in Iraq/oil wars and the heating up of the earth that is disrupting the world's climate. On Monday morning, October 22, in Washington, D.C. on Capitol Hill and elsewhere around the country, that movement will become visible as large numbers of people engage in nonviolent direct action to disrupt business as usual. We will be calling for an end to this criminal war and strong action to slow, stop and reverse global warming (www.nowarnowarming.org).

Another world is possible, but for it come about another U.S. is necessary, in the words of the recent U.S. Social Forum. It's a world worth fighting for, a world worth sacrificing for. Our children and their children are counting on us to do the right thing, and to do it now. The clock is ticking, and we need to act as if the future of human society depends upon what we do, because it really does.

Well, of course, at some point someone is going to have to do something more than look away. And it is going to have to be enough to seriously shake the minds and feelings of the broad populace and of ourselves too. How else can we possibly dislodge large numbers from fatalism given that for the fatalistic anything that appears perfunctory just adds to the malady. March in place, hold the line, make an appearance, fight the good fight unto defeat, be on the side of the angels unto the graveyard - or do anything that screams out or implies or even just suggests, to any fatalist wanting to so interpret it, that we can't win, and our entreaties will just bounce off fatalists' slicked down cynicism.

We need shared vision to overcome the view that no other world is possible. Our vision must be inspiring, convincing, and liberating. We must hold it with passion, participating in its definition and development.

US Caused More Deaths in Iraq Than Saddam, Says Anti-War Tribunal

Roy told the gathering here: “”The evidence collated in this tribunal should … be used by the International Criminal Court — whose jurisdiction the United States does not recognize — to try as war criminals George Bush, Tony Blair, John Howard, Silvio Berlusconi, and all those government officials, army generals, and corporate CEOs who participated in this war and now benefit from it.”

She added that the tribunal was “an act of resistance,” “a defense mounted against one of the most cowardly wars ever fought in history.”

ISTANBUL - The World Tribunal on Iraq (WTI), a grouping of NGOs, intellectuals and writers opposed to the war in Iraq, on Friday accused the United States of causing more deaths in Iraq than ousted president Saddam Hussein.

He singled out the United States and British governments for allegedly blocking projects that would, he said, have allowed more people to survive.

Iraq Could Try Blackwater Over Deadly Shootout

BAGHDAD - A top Iraqi judge said on Tuesday that US security firm Blackwater could go on trial over a deadly shootout in Baghdad, as Washington sought to cool tensions over the incident.

“This company is subject to Iraqi law and the crime committed was on Iraqi territory and the Iraqi judiciary is responsible for tackling the case,” said Abdul Sattar Ghafour Bairaqdar from Iraq’s Supreme Judiciary Council, the country’s highest court.Iraq’s interior ministry on Monday ordered the cancellation of Blackwater’s operating licence after its guards who were escorting US embassy officials were involved in Sunday’s gunbattle in Baghdad’s Al-Yarmukh neighbourhood.

“Blackwater is still here. The US authorities are holding discussions with the Iraqi counterparts over the issue,” the official told AFP.

Just how deep does Bush's "I is Sparticus" attitude run in this government? Apparently, it even thrives down in Davy Jones' Locker.

This month, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco gave the Navy the thumb's up to turn whales' innards into tapioca via sonar blasts off the California Coast by stating: "The safety of the whales must be weighed, and so must the safety of our warriors. And our country."

Uh, our warriors? Are we talking Aquaman and a super-buffed The Little Mermaid, here?

Oh, yeah, the Navy estimated that 466 permanent injuries to whales would occur.

Oh, yeah, that same week, Stanford University released a report stating that gray whale numbers are still dangerously low and a proposal for a South Atlantic whale sanctuary was defeated in the first vote at the International Whaling Commission's meeting this year.

The Blood on George Bush's Hands

DETROIT -- It was certainly one of President George W. Bush's worst performances, and that's saying a lot. Well past his bedtime, he spoke to the nation last Thursday, looking and sounding like a sedated automaton, reading the lines for his latest justification for staying the course in Iraq and telling the American people to consider the preposterous request to have patience and trust his judgment.

Thank you for calling it by its right name: "invasion and occupation."

Calling it a "war" -- which it is not -- serves the important propaganda purpose of rallying Americans to support the government because we are "at war."

A few days ago, I heard NPR actually refer to "the war effort" -- a WWII vintage phrase meant to connote that we're all in this together, and anyone who opposes the "war effort" is unamerican.

I know it's more syllables, but folks, please call it what it is whenever you speak or write about Iraq.

Lessons From 9/11 Still To Be Learned

Why we need to remember 9/11 is because it shows that there are people out there in the world that are hurting and sick of heart and mind. They can be helped. The world came to support us after that horrible day and for a moment we all seemed connected. Together we could have figured out a solution to these wayward brothers and sisters. Instead the leaders saw it as an opportunity to return to their old ways and seek out and destroy. The old unenlightened approach of an eye for an eye, ego against ego doesn’t work anymore. As Gandhi said this only makes everyone blind. Yes the blindness is everywhere especially in DC where the PR General is rationalizing the insanity with his testimony and the Senators appear concerned but will again vote to continue the funding of this war that never needed to happen.

Despite all the talk about how members of Congress have been turning against the war, few are clearly advocating a genuine end to U.S. military intervention in Iraq. Media outlets will keep telling us that the U.S. government is developing serious plans to "leave" Iraq. But we would be foolish to believe those tall tales. The antiwar movement has an enormous amount of grassroots work to do -- changing the political terrain of the United States from the bottom up -- before the calculus of political opportunism in Washington determines that it would be more expedient to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq than to keep it going under one guise or another.

Time magazine published a cover story titled "Iraq: What will happen when we leave."

But it turns out, what will happen when we leave is that we won't leave.

The USA’s military spending is now close to $2 billion a day. This fall, the country will begin its seventh year of continuous war, with no end in sight. On the horizon is the very real threat of a massive air assault on Iran. And few in Congress seem willing or able to articulate a rejection of the warfare state.

LIBBY AND POSADA: TWO SIDES OF A RATTY COIN

How does the commutation of the prison sentence of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, former chief of staff for Vice President Dick Cheney, coincide with the release by a federal judge of Luis Posada Carriles, former top terrorist of the Western Hemisphere?

Answer: Both the commuted and the released could have spilled the beans on powerful officials for criminal conspiracies.

Libby lied about the Plame affair and obstructed justice, that is he covered up larger lies told by Bush and Cheney about reasons for invading Iraq.

Posada also lied on immigration issues unrelated to his 1976 plot to bomb a Cuban airliner in mid flight. Federal prosecutors purposely bungled the case and a judge released him in 2007 after he served a short time in jail.

The president says the results of his recent troop escalation will be evaluated by Gen. David Petraeus, wrote Barone, and not by “the polls.”

Translation: Everybody’s out of step but me.

One of the more unnerving reports out of the president’s seminar with the pundits came from Brooks, who quoted Bush as saying: “It’s more of a theological perspective. I do believe there is an Almighty, and I believe a gift of that Almighty to all is freedom. And I will tell you that is a principle that no one can convince me that doesn’t exist.”

we know that the president of the United States believes God has chosen him to bring freedom to the world, that he refuses to acknowledge setbacks in his crusade and that he flat-out doesn’t care what “the polls”—meaning the American people—might think.

It is an axiom of American political life that the actions of the US military are beyond criticism. Democrats and Republicans praise the men and women in uniform at every turn. Apart from the odd bad apple at Abu Ghraib, the US military in Iraq is deemed to be doing a heroic job under trying circumstances.

That perception will take a severe knock today with the publication in The Nation magazine of a series of in-depth interviews with 50 combat veterans of the Iraq war from across the US. In the interviews, veterans have described acts of violence in which US forces have abused or killed Iraqi men, women and children with impunity.
