As a personality trait, shyness probably ranks as one of the more benign characteristics that someone can possess, but new research suggests that at least some forms of shyness may have violent, and often deadly, consequences.

This shyness may be innate in some people, meaning that they are more vulnerable to feeling hurt and ashamed, adds Elaine Aron, a psychologist and research associate at SUNY Stonybrook. "Children with any kind of unusual temperament tend to be ostracized by their peers, and they become humiliated or ashamed," she says. "And when any one of us are ashamed, or backed into a corner, we can do all kinds of things, including acting out violently."

If so, you may be among the ten percent of all Internet surfers afflicted with “Internet addiction disorder,” a pathological condition that can lead to anxiety and severe depression. To better diagnose and treat Internet addiction, Dr. Pinhas Dannon, a psychiatrist from Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine, recommends that it be grouped with other extreme addictive disorders such as gambling, sex addiction, and kleptomania.

A senior lecturer at Tel Aviv University, Dr. Dannon is known worldwide for work in the area of gambling and addiction, a major research focus for him since 1995. His first article on kleptomania was published in 1996. He will present his new research findings on addiction at the National Gambling Council’s meeting in Las Vegas this November.

All they have to do is convince people they are safe, or introduce them in a way that will not bother people (Like when they are unconscious, or offline) Soldiers, maybe, but when they talk about injecting them into trauma victims, they don't mention any approval by patients. Will it be left to the discretion of the treating physician ? Will they be obliged to tell the patient ? Will they consider the ignorance of the patient to be in the best interests of the patient, and the health system. Not long ago these might have seemed stupid questions "What is there to doubt" Surely we can trust the pentagon.They won't need an electoral roll, they'll have a catalog. Whoever gets the contract is going to make a fortune.

The Department of Defense has awarded $1.6 million to the Center for Bioelectronics, Biosensors and Biochips (C3B) at Clemson University for the development of an implantable biochip that could relay vital health information if a soldier is wounded in battle or a civilian is hurt in an accident.

The biochip, about the size of a grain of rice, could measure and relay such information as lactate and glucose levels in the event of a major hemorrhage

Turkey censors Wordpress; blogs can't be accessed

clipper's remarks: When I tried to post a new entry to my blog a few minutes ago, I came across this page. It says: "Access to this site has been suspended in accordance with decision no: 2007/195 of T.C. Fatih 2.Civil Court of First Instance."

At first, I thought it was my blog but after trying to access Wordpress.com's main page, I noticed the total Wordpress.com domain was blocked by the authorities.

Another ridiculous example of censorship on the Internet content, in Turkey. there are hundred thousands of blogs on Wordpress.com and none can be accessed from Turkey now.

This decision of the court is a shame for a country which claims to respect free speech. I protest this unfair blockage on Wordpress and call all the Turkish bloggers to support free speech and to condemn censorship.

Google Browser Coming Your Way Soon?

clipper's remarks: I think the most interesting think to note out of this whole article is the fact that Google has regestered the domain name gbrowser.com. While they may just be covering all of their bases I think that this bodes well for a future release of their own browser. I am sure that some of you will see this as another indication that Google is taking over the world, and while that may be true, I am not quite convinced that Google is as evil as some are making them out to be. Or maybe they are taking over Mwahahahah

First up is the noted fact that Google had registered a "Gbrowser.com" domain name, which would lead one to believe that some sort of interest exists in such a browser. On the other hand, Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said in the past that the company would build a browser only if there were a real user benefit.

Google recently began offering a version of its Google Earth application that runs in browsers as opposed to the downloaded application, reducing complete dependence upon the Google Earth application.

Add to Google Earth the Google word processor, spreadsheet, slide presentation program, and the many other browser apps in development, and it really starts to seem like a good possibility that Google would build their own browser. Along with support for applications, they could also increase security for those apps and monetize it all on several levels.

LOS ANGELES — At Yahoo, Web 2.0 has won one battle with stodgy old Web 1.0.

Yahoo is shutting down Yahoo Photos — for years, the No. 1 or No. 2 most-visited photo site on the Web. Its users will be directed to move their pictures to Yahoo's hot upstart, Flickr.

Flickr, acquired by Yahoo in March 2005, has steadily gained traction. Visitors rose 22% between April 2006 and April 2007, according to measurement service Hitwise. At the same time, Yahoo Photos lost 60% of its audience.

In its heyday, Yahoo Photos was such a go-to place for photo-sharing that more than 2 billion images are stored on its servers, to nearly 500 million for Flickr.

Yahoo Photos will be shut down by the fall. Users will be directed over a three-month period to transfer their images to Flickr or other photo sites such as Shutterfly, Kodak Gallery, Snapfish or Photobucket. Yahoo says it will make the transition easy, with a one-click transfer process.
