Don't send your tax rebates overseas

We are all being alerted that the checks are on the way, get ready to shop. While I don't see this as the answer to the current recession, those who can or feel they should go shopping should at least try to buy something made in the United States. If we run to the nearest discount store or mega-mart, we could hurt our economy more by sending more of our dollars overseas. To get the most bang for our buck, we all should seek out made-in-America and, when possible, Michigan-made goods and services.

Wayne County's plan to buy more than 700 federally subsidized and foreclosed homes in Detroit and another 500 elsewhere in the county for $1 each has hit a snag.

Many of the cities had applied or were planning to request the $1 homes when they learned Wayne County was doing the same thing. Many had plans to rehabilitate the homes, sell them to the public or employees or demolish those in the worst shape.

The cities where the homes -- mostly abandoned and in disrepair -- are say the county is trying to poach what belongs to the cities.

The homes -- which are among 11,000 foreclosed HUD homes in Michigan and Ohio -- are another sign of the nation's mortgage foreclosure crisis. The $1 program began in 2003 to help communities fight blight. City officials know that one deteriorating vacant home on a block can begin to bring property values down for entire neighborhoods.

WASHINGTON — Scientists say they have pinpointed a genetic link that makes people more likely to get hooked on tobacco, causing them to smoke more cigarettes, making it harder to quit, and leading more often to deadly lung cancer.

This is kind of a double whammy gene,” said Christopher Amos, a professor of epidemiology at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and author of one of the studies. “It also makes you more likely to be dependent on smoking and less likely to quit smoking.”

A smoker who inherits this genetic variation from both parents has an 80% greater chance of lung cancer than a smoker without the variants, the researchers reported. And that same smoker on average lights up two extra cigarettes a day and has a much harder time quitting than smokers who don’t have these genetic differences.

HONOLULU - Police in Hawaii say a sidekick of TV bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman turned himself in to authorities after a shopping centre security guard reported seeing him naked in his pickup truck performing a lewd act.

But Tim Chapman's lawyer insisted his client spilled juice on himself and was just changing clothes Thursday night.

Police say the guard told Chapman to put on his clothes and get out of the truck.

After dressing, police say Chapman started his truck and drove over a sidewalk, nearly hitting the guard, then drove off.

The guard told police that he recognized Chapman from Duane Chapman's show "Dog the Bounty Hunter" and that he was performing an unspecified lewd act.

Duane Chapman and Tim Chapman are not related.

Tim Chapman's attorney, Brook Hart, said it was all a misunderstanding.

"It was simply a man who wet his pants with orange juice inadvertently and was changing them, doing nothing wrong at all and believing he had sufficient privacy to do it," Hart said.

OBERLIN, Kan. - A postcard featuring a color drawing of Santa Claus and a young girl was mailed in 1914, but its journey was slower than Christmas. It just arrived in northwest Kansas.

The Christmas card was dated Dec. 23, 1914, and mailed to Ethel Martin of Oberlin, apparently from her cousins in Alma, Neb.

It's a mystery where it spent most of the last century, Oberlin Postmaster Steve Schultz said. "It's surprising that it never got thrown away," he said. "How someone found it, I don't know."

Ethel Martin is deceased, but Schultz said the post office wanted to get the card to a relative.

That's how the 93-year-old relic ended up with Bernice Martin, Ethel's sister-in-law. She said she believed the card had been found somewhere in Illinois.

"That's all we know," she said. "But it is kind of curious. We'd like to know how it got down there."

During a year-long crackdown on marijuana growers across Michigan, state law enforcement officer have more than doubled the number of pot plants seized from fields and gardens and indoor greenhouses.

The Michigan State Police said in in a news release that police eradicated more than 35,586 marijuana plants this year, compared with 5,897 in 2006. An increasing number of the plants were found being grown indoor, the news release said.

The announcement came at the conclusion of the 2007 Cannabis Eradication and suppression Program, formerly known as Operation H.E.M.P.

"Michigan is a popular state for illegal marijuana growing because of its fertile land and remote areas," said Col. Peter Munoz, MSP director. "Marijuana plants are commonly cultivated in farm fields, backyards, forest openings, along drainage ditches, and the shores of lakes, rivers and swamps."

Graveyard shift to be labeled a possible cancer risk

LONDON — Like UV rays and diesel exhaust fumes, working the graveyard shift will soon be listed as a “probable” cause of cancer.

It is a surprising step validating a concept once considered wacky. And it is based on research that finds higher rates of breast and prostate cancer among women and men whose workday starts after dark.

Next month, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization, will add overnight shift work as a probable carcinogen.

The American Cancer Society says it likely will follow. Up to now, the U.S. organization has considered the work-cancer link to be “uncertain, controversial or unproven.”

The higher cancer rates don’t prove working overnight can cause cancer. There may be other factors common among graveyard shift workers that raise their risk for cancer.

The celebrity chef's "Emeril Live," which has been on the air for 10 years, will cease production December 11, Food Network publicist Carrie Welch told The Associated Press.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Dr. Robert Cade, who invented the sports drink Gatorade and launched a multibillion-dollar industry that the beverage continues to dominate, died Tuesday of kidney failure. He was 80.

His death was announced by the University of Florida, where he and other researchers created Gatorade in 1965 to help the school's football players replace carbohydrates and electrolytes lost through sweat while playing in swamp-like heat

Now sold in 80 countries in dozens of flavors, Gatorade was born thanks to a question from former Gator Coach Dwayne Douglas, Cade said in a 2005 interview with The Associated Press.

He asked, "Doctor, why don't football players wee-wee after a game?"

Jellyfish swarm hits Scotland prompting warnings

LONDON (Reuters) - Millions of stinging baby jellyfish have been spotted off Scotland just days after another swarm wiped out Northern Ireland's only Salmon farm, the Marine Conservation Society said on Friday.

The organization, which said the abnormal swarms of baby mauve stinger and compass jellyfish were due to wind and tidal factors, urged fish farmers and the public to report any sightings to help monitor their progress.

"It is quite unusual for this number of juvenile jellyfish to be occurring in UK waters at this time of year," said Anne Saunders, MCS Scottish Projects Officer.

"But these blooms are phenomenal and consist of millions of individuals, being washed here by strong Atlantic currents."

Compass jellyfish are common in British waters during the summer, but mauve stingers are relatively uncommon.

For a while during the 1990s, it looked as though the loggerhead sea turtle might really be making a comeback. But a new federal report — a 5-year review that was mandated by the Endangered Species Act — suggests that loggerheads, which are listed as threatened, have begun to decline again. Their life-pattern makes them doubly vulnerable to humans. They lay their eggs on beaches, habitat vulnerable to development and disturbance, in places like South Florida and Oman on the Arabian Peninsula, and they spend their long lives at sea, where they are often fouled in fishing nets.

It is partly the longevity of these creatures that makes their death as bystanders among the global fishing fleets feel so tragic, a truly colossal waste of life. A loggerhead reaches sexual maturity at around 35. Some kinds of fishing, like shrimp trawl fishing, lend themselves to the use of turtle excluder devices, which help sea turtles escape from nets.
