Yes, it turns out that you can zoom in much more deeply onto Google Maps by doing this:

Select a location and switch to satellite view

Zoom in as far as you can, and click “link to this page” at the top right

Now replace the “z” parameter in the URL with a higher value, e.g. 20, 22, or 23, and wait. Some locations will now show more detailed imagery

The hardiness of the hay bacillus bacteria ensures the digital data encoded into them can last for millenia.

Generally found in soil or decaying matter, hay bacillus are exceptionally resistant to extreme weather conditions. Two megabits (data equivalent to 1.6 million Roman letters) can be stored in each bacterium of hay bacillus in the form of implants. These tiny implants can be extracted in a lab and read like ordinary text at a later date.

The research team was able to encode Einstein's renown E=MC^2 equation along with the date 1905 into the genome of the bacteria strain. They were able to read the message later on by analyzing its genetic sequence.

Head researcher Yoshiaki Ohashi said, "If I wanted to store my personal diary in these live bacteria and take it with me to my grave, then my story can live for thousands and thousands of years."

What’s a nature-lover to do? Well, Kevin Van Braak may have the answer: a portable green camp ground. The artist has fabbed up at least two small trailers that convert into moveable green spaces. One of them mimics a grassy meadow, complete with a faux campfire and silk wildflowers. The other (after the jump) looks a bit larger and includes a brace of fake trees and a birdcall recording.

Interested in commissioning Van Braak to build your very own portable corner of the Brady Bunch backyard? Click through to the jump to look at more photos and find the link.

Tags: weird, humor, technology

<clipSource>http://news.windingroad.com/etc/portable-green-space-for-the-urban-camper/</clipSource>

Foods To Calm You Down Fast

clipped by: k9riley99

Clip Source: food.yahoo.com

1. Berries, any berries
Eat them one by one instead of M&Ms when the pressure's on. For those tough times when tension tightens your jaw, try rolling a frozen berry around in your mouth. And then another, and another. Since the carbs in berries turn to sugar very slowly, you won't have a blood sugar crash. The bonus: They're a good source of vitamin C, which helps fight a jump in the stress hormone cortisol

2. Guacamole
If you're craving something creamy, look no further. Avocados are loaded with B vitamins, which stress quickly depletes and which your body needs to maintain nerves and brain cells. Plus their creaminess comes from healthy fat. Scoop up the stuff with whole-grain baked chips-crunching keeps you from gritting your teeth.

3. Mixed nuts
Just an ounce will help replace those stress-depleted Bs (walnuts), give you a whopping amount of zinc (Brazil nuts)-it's also drained by high anxiety-and boost your E (almonds), which helps fight cellular damage linked to chronic stress. Buy nuts in the shell and think of it as multi-tasking: With every squeeze of the nutcracker, you're releasing a little bit of tension.

4. Oranges
People who take a 1,000 mg of C before giving a speech have lower levels of cortisol and lower blood pressure than those who don't. So lean back, take a deep breath, and concentrate on peeling a large orange. The 5-minute mindfulness break will ease your mind and you'll get a bunch of C as well.

5. Asparagus
Each tender stalk is a source of folic acid, a natural mood-lightener. Dip the spears in fat-free yogurt or sour cream for a hit of calcium with each bite.

6. Chai tea
A warm drink is a super soother, and curling up with a cup of aromatic decaf chai tea (Tazo makes ready-to-brew bags) can make the whole evil day go away.

7. Dark chocolate
Okay, there's nothing in it that relieves stress, but when only chocolate will do, reach for the dark, sultry kind that's at least 70% cocoa.

Tags: health, foods, stress, calming foods, vitamin b, c, e, stress hormone cortisol, folic acid

<clipSource>http://food.yahoo.com/blog/beautyeats/1888/foods-to-calm-you-down-fast</clipSource>

181 Things To Do On The Moon

clipped by: Djiezes
clipper's remarks: http://www.nasa.gov/pdf/163560main_LunarExplorationObjectives.pdf

Clip Source: science.nasa.gov

181 Things To Do

accounts for only about a third of the 181 objectives, however.

George Orwell has earned the right to be called one of the finer writers in the English language through such novels as 1984 and Animal Farm, such essays as “Shooting an Elephant,” and his memoir Down and Out in Paris.

George expressed a strong dislike of totalitarian governments in his work, but he was also passionate defender of good writing. Thus, you may want to hear some of George’s writing tips.*

A scrupulous writer, in every sentence that he writes, will ask himself at least four questions, thus:

What am I trying to say?

What words will express it?

What image or idiom will make it clearer?

Is this image fresh enough to have an effect?

And he will probably ask himself two more:

Could I put it more shortly?

Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?

One can often be in doubt about the effect of a word or a phrase, and one needs rules that one can rely on when instinct fails. I think the following rules will cover most cases:

Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.

Never use a long word where a short one will do.

If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.

Never use the passive where you can use the active.

Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.

Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

* From “Politics and the English Language” by George Orwell.
