clipper's remarks: I remember the first time I deliberately plagiarized a paper for school. In the pre-Internet 5th grade I copied word for word out of the World Book Encyclopedia and turned it in as a report on Abraham Lincoln. I did not get caught and I have felt guilty ever since.

Looking back (way back), I think the reason I copied the content instead of doing the creative work myself is because the subject was just flat out boring. I had Lincoln overload. "Teach me about something I don't already know...already," I thought.

When I did it, I KNEW it was wrong. See, "back then" we had a larger sense of social conscience. Wrong was wrong, not "if you get caught it's wrong."

My daughter is a full time college student. We spend many hours a week on the phone together "doing homework" and writing papers together. I listen and make suggestions and my daughter researches until her keyboard fingers are numb. When the paper is finished we run it through the "plagiarism checker" online.

Some people plagiarize intentionally to co-opt intellectual property, but plagiarism mostly happens because people just don’t know any better, says Katie Povejsil of iParadigms, one of the sites that monitors the Web for stolen words and works.

Project to digitize 60 years of S.C. newspapers

Digital librarians Kate Boyd and Craig Keeney will lead efforts to digitize select S.C. newspapers from 1860 to 1922.

A rich but dusty archive of South Carolina history -- newspapers published throughout the state from 1860 to 1922 -- will become Web accessible through the S.C. Digital Newspaper Project, an initiative of University Libraries.

The project, funded with a two-year $350,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), will scan, enhance, and deliver to the Library of Congress an estimated 100,000 pages of selected S.C. newspaper titles. The resulting online archive will reflect major artistic, literary, religious, ethnic, cultural, economic, and political events in South Carolina and surrounding states.

“I hope that this next step towards even more accessibility to South Carolina newspapers will capture people’s interest from around the world in South Carolina and American history.

I clipped the research link so I could get back to the graphs. It's quite shocking. Grandma and Grandpa are smoking as much pot as their grand-teens.

The NIDA Monitoring the Future survey of 8th-, 10th-, and 12th-graders found that the nonmedical use of opioids, tranquilizers, sedatives/barbiturates, and amphetamines was unchanged between 2003 and 2004. Specifically, the survey found that 5.0 percent of 12th-graders reported using OxyContin without a prescription in the past year, and 9.3 percent reported using Vicodin, making Vicodin one of the most commonly abused licit drugs in this population.

Project Kaisei has launched.

The group of scientists, environmentalists and ocean lovers left the SF Bay yesterday on an expedition to study a gigantic floating 'plastic vortex' of trash that floats in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The group--led by Marinite Mary Crowley--is trying to figure out what type of trash is there, how it got there and ways to remove and recycle it.

The gigantic trash heap has been growing for years--the result of our consumption of non-recyclable materials--and contributes to death of marine life and pollution of the oceans.

Because the floating garbage pile is constantly in flux, nobody really knows how big it is, but some estimates suggest its mass is double the size of Texas.

You can follow the action on the Project Kaisei website where they've set up a special Google Earth link to track the project's progress.

Budget increase proposed for U.S. aquaculture

The proposed fiscal 2010 budget for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, released this week by the Obama administration, includes a USD 2 million (EUR 1.5 million) increase in the agency's USD 4 million (EUR 3 million) offshore aquaculture research program.

The Obama administration says the increase would allow NOAA to "develop permitting guidelines, review marine aquaculture permit applications, support stock enhancement programs and inform habitat and other regulatory consultations, resulting in significant advances in NOAA's capacity to issue or consult on marine aquaculture permits."

Currently, there's no federal regulatory framework in place for offshore aquaculture. The Bush administration pushed a bill to accelerate the permitting process for open-ocean aquaculture, but the National Offshore Aquaculture Act of 2007 never became law.

Talking Trash: Clean Up Our Oceans

clipper's remarks: When I was a little girl, I so admired Jacques Cousteau. He embodied everything I love about exploring the earth, investigating the oceans, and saving sea creatures great and small.

Now, his great legacy is continued through the work of his son, Jean-Michel, who has partnered with Project Kaisei to clean up our oceans and raise awareness about the severe increase in plastic pollution.

What's really in our oceans? TRASH. Well, we already knew that. What you might not know it that even in this enlightened day and age of awareness...the global oceanic garbage disposal problem is growing leaps and bounds before our eyes.

Project Kaisei team talks trash

Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of the famed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau speaking at a press conference Tuesday,

Cousteau was joined by Project Kaisei founders, scientists, environmentalists and ocean lovers who spent a month in the middle of the ocean at a place called the North Pacific Gyre where tons of plastic trash has collected, and is floating in the sea.

"We traveled thousands of miles on both vessels and we tested surface samples across that whole distance. Every single sample we came up with plastic, every single one."

An example of what they found was spread out in front of the audience; ghost fishing nets, chunks of plastic lawn furniture, crates, large containers, a helmet.

This is the stuff they found in every sample of water taken.

we found a myriad of types of garbage. In some of the areas that weren't so congested, maybe we'd see 25 pieces but in other areas we would see three to four hundred pieces of marine debris
