The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace
Prize for 2008 to Martti Ahtisaari for his important efforts, on
several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve
international conflicts. These efforts have contributed to a more
peaceful world and to "fraternity between nations" in Alfred
Nobel’s spirit.

Martti Ahtisaari was the President of Finland in 1994-2000.

In 1989-90 he played a significant part in the establishment of Namibia’s independence

2005 he and his organization Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) were
central to the solution of the complicated Aceh question in Indonesia.

In 1999 and again in 2005-07, he sought under especially difficult circumstances to find a solution to the conflict in Kosovo.

In 2008, through the CMI and in cooperation with other institutions,
Ahtisaari has tried to help find a peaceful conclusion to the problems
in Iraq.

The event was mainly to thank the community, and the many regional and state leaders who helped make the Google data center a reality.

Goose Creek Mayor Michael J. Heizler said the new data center begins a new chapter in the community's proud history: "This is a community that knows and understands the importance of hard work and has seen great success from it.

The Google data center, which will hold tens of thousands of computers will help Google meet the growing demand for its services around the world. Every day hundreds of people use Google to access information and webs applications.

Managers who practice motivation by humiliation are doomed to failure. Quality organizations and good people won’t put up with that kind of person for long.

I was first introduced to the concept of “blameless problem solving” several employers ago. The CEO would call a meeting and remind everyone that he expected us all to:

Treat each other like adults.

Practice blameless problem solving.

Getting people to treat each other like adults is something easier said than done, but it’s an honorable goal. It means being mindful of what you say and write to your coworkers.

Back Bay: Folly Beach, South Carolina

As a child growing up in Columbia, the smell of chicken frying late on a Saturday night heralded a trip to Folly Beach. We’d pack up the cooler, floats and other accessories early the next morning and head to the beach.

As we neared Folly on a two-lane road with oak limbs hanging overhead and produce stands on either side my mother would always ask, “Can you smell the salt air?” My sister and I dutifully took deep breaths and nodded our assent. We could hardly wait to jump in the waves and enjoy the rides at the amusement park. The thought of living at the beach was completely foreign to us.

Fast forward to 2007. The amusement park is long gone, but the waves still beckon surfers and swimmers. And though Folly Beach still proudly calls itself “the edge of America,” it is definitely more upscale than the somewhat shabby beach town of my childhood. Best of all, not only is it possible to live at the beach, it is surprisingly affordable.

Most of Greg Mathis' students have been suspended or expelled from other district schools; and for many of the students, the North Spartan Boulevard school is their last chance to earn a diploma. The only other school that served a similar student population was Sea Islands YouthBuild Charter, which the board closed less than a month ago. That school is appealing the decision.

Kenneth Sellers, the new Greg Mathis Charter director, questioned what would become of his students if the school closed and said they instead might be sitting at home watching TV or hanging out on street corners and getting into trouble, he said.

Charter schools are public schools run by boards of parents and community members. They follow state laws but not district mandates.

Sellers has rewritten the school's mission statement and is revising the school's charter. He plans to offer training for staff and he said he's working to address all concerns cited by the review team.

I think they would find we are serving children. They are our customers. What they should see is a school working to meet needs of at-risk kids."
