Unfortunately, the guy on this thing was in a hurry to get on his way, so we only got a little info, but the pictures here speak for themselves. This home-built thingamajig named "The Devil's Joke" was built as a tribute to Vietnam vets and apparently, total insanity. The power train here is a 2.8 liter Ford V6 sporting an Offenhauser intake and a four-barrel carb.

They say cancer changes you. They may be right. When I found out I had breast cancer 12 years ago, I became a comedian.

Not the kind anyone paid to see. Just the kind who lurked around hospital corridors and examination rooms offering offbeat opinions, wiseacre remarks, outrageous commentary.

To my oncologist — a short, brisk woman who informed me my tumor had been “fairly aggressive” — I complained about the title of the pamphlet she had given me, “Chemotherapy and You.” I said I’d prefer it if the title were “Chemotherapy and Somebody Else.”

I complained, too, about the little marketing-friendly write-up that listed her family and her hobbies. The family was fine. But hobbies? I didn’t want a doctor who had time for hobbies. I wanted her to spend all her waking hours focusing on curing cancer, particularly the type indicated on my own nasty little pathology report.

MERRICKVILLE, Ontario — Diana Beresford-Kroeger pointed to a towering wafer ash tree near her home.

She favors what she terms a bioplan, reforesting cities and rural areas with trees according to the medicinal, environmental, nutritional, pesticidal and herbicidal properties she claims for them, which she calls ecofunctions.

And she grows more than 100 types of trees, including rare fir trees and Siberian cherry trees, and disease-resistant chestnuts, elms and butternut.

Ms. Beresford-Kroeger recently completed the book “Arboretum Borealis” about the boreal forest in Canada, which cuts across the northern half of the country. Canadian officials have recently announced plans to preserve 55 million acres — roughly half. “Trees are a living miracle,” Ms. Beresford-Kroeger said. “Leaves can take in carbon dioxide and create oxygen. And all creatures must have oxygen.”

Perhaps most unexpected was the tenderness of the friendships developed in those hours.

After trading stories down at my place, glimmers of hope remained in my mind, suggesting that God had done something wonderful among us all. I was honored to enjoy it.

Scientists Catch Live Fish At Record Depth In The Atlantic

Scientists say they have captured a live deep-sea fish and three shrimp species at a record depth of 2,300m on the hot vents of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

"Pressurized recovery has been around for the past 30 years, but this is the deepest fish-capture under pressure - the previous record was 1,400m. This is also the first time pressurized capture has occurred at a hydrothermal vent," said Dr. Bruce Shillito, marine biologist at the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France.

"At depths of over 1,000m, it is difficult to recover animals alive. Catching with no pressure is as good as catching dead. Fish are the most fragile - even a fisherman with a 100m line will probably reel in a catch whose gas bladder is in its mouth," said Shillito.

The researchers hope to be able to transfer the animals into an experimental lab to study their normal biology.
