Speed eaters gain weight, clog arteries but have few regrets

(CNN) -- Don Lerman set a record by eating seven sticks of salted butter in five minutes. During six years of competitive eating, he gained 100 pounds.
Dominick Cardo, known as "The Doginator" in competitions, woke up at night sweating, nauseated and feeling stomach and chest pains.
Both former competitve eaters competed in the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. This year's competition airs Saturday on ESPN.
"Any way you look at it, it's not healthy," Dave "Coondog" O'Karma, a retired competitive eater, said of his former hobby. "You do it once in a while, and it's fun. I don't think loading your body with fat and salt is healthy."
After 35 years of gobbling hamburger, oysters, eggs, corn on the cob and even bull testicles, O'Karma listened to his family and retired from the competition.
The toll of competitive eating on the body has not been researched,
his love of eating wasn't healthy.

Cam Sinclair Lands First Double Backflip in Freestyle Motocross Competition

During last weekend's Red Bull X-Fighters event in Texas, the third stop on the five event freestyle motocross (FMX) series, Metal Mulisha rider Cam Sinclair nudged the sport firmly into the next realm of performance by becoming the first rider ever to land a double backflip during a competitive freestyle run. To be clear, until last week the move had only been pulled in Big Trick competitions, like the X-games, but not in freestyle competition, where riders perform multiple moves on a timed run. What's more, Sinclair pulled the move in consecutive rounds while trying to fend off challenges from a dozen of the world's best riders, impressing the big Texas size crowd.

Statement on death of Nottinghamshire Police Dogs
Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, is saddened to hear about the death of two German Shepherd dogs who were found in a vehicle parked outside the Headquarters of Nottinghamshire Police on Tuesday.
Whilst the cause of death is still to be determined, the charity would like to remind dog owners and police dog handlers that leaving your dog locked in a car can prove fatal, particularly during a heatwave. It can take just twenty minutes for a dog to die and temperatures can reach over 40 degrees in some vehicles.
Dogs Trust has compiled three essential tips for owners to help their dogs beat the heat:
Walk your dog in the morning and evening when the weather is cooler and make sure shady spots and drinking water are available.
Clip the fur of particularly hairy hounds and apply canine sun cream to areas most likely to burn: ears, nose, and belly. Human suncream can be toxic so buy a special pet version from your local pet shop.

Not me, that's for sure — at least until I read John Tagliabue's March 16, 2009 New York Times article about the current kerfuffle concerning clothesless hiking in the Swiss Alps.
The Swiss like their secrecy, particularly in banking. At other times, they are more open. Take hiking.
In recent years, it has become fashionable for a growing number of Swiss and some foreigners to wander in the Alps clad in little more than hiking shoes and sun screen. Last summer, the number of nude hikers increased to such an extent that the hills often seemed alive with the sound of everything but the swish of trousers.
For centuries the farmers here lived off their famed Appenzeller cheese and a bitter liqueur that most, except fervent admirers, say tastes like cough medicine gone bad. Not until 1990 did Appenzell grant women the right to vote, decades after other regions of Switzerland.

Natural herb that comes from God
I've written several marijuana letters to the Monitor in the past, but this will be my last. I give up.
I smoked or ate marijuana for 40 years and never once did it make me puke. Nor did it give me a hangover or make me think I could drive when I couldn't.
I doubt many of you lawmakers have even asked anyone with experience to describe its effect on the mind. It may be different for many, but with me, it just opened up my mind enough to let me learn more about myself - which led to more empathy for others and a more profound belief in my concept of God, who really is Love.
But you already know that, right? I don't think so. Not when year after year you deny the sick a natural herb that comes from God. Laws are supposed to help people, not hurt them.
All I can do is keep hoping you'll see. It will surely take a miracle. In a world run by people who flat-out refuse to see, it's the only option left.

On 3rd April, 1882, Ford visited Jessie James in his home and when he stood on a chair to straighten a picture on the wall, he shot him in the back of the head. Ford was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. Two hours later he was pardoned by Crittenden and given his reward.

The James family were owners of slaves and supported the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. In 1862 William Quantrill established a band of guerilla fighters. Jessie James joined and other members of the gang included Frank James, Cole Younger and James Younger.

The governor of Missouri, Thomas Crittenden, now responded by offering a reward of $10,000 for the capture of Jessie James.
