The idea of cloud computing is certainly compelling. With on-demand IT assets, enterprises can adjust more quickly to shifts in demand for applications, computing infrastructure and storage. Variable costs, as opposed to big capital outlays, sit well with IT finance folks, too. But there are obvious hurdles to adoption, including performance.

Riverbed Technology this week disclosed its plans to help companies accelerate access to applications and storage resources that are located in a cloud computing environment and delivered to private data centers, distributed branch offices and mobile end users.

While many organizations are in the early stages of cloud computing adoption, Riverbed’s intent is to keep advancing its optimization wares so that as enterprises get deeper into the cloud, they’ll have WAN acceleration options to consider.

China Unicom surpassed 1 million 3G users in its first month, a figure that took China Mobile seven months

China Unicom's next-generation mobile service won more than 1 million users in its first month, a number that took rival China Mobile seven months to reach with its homegrown 3G standard.

China Unicom, which last month launched commercial 3G services using the standard WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), had just over 1 million subscribers by the end of the month, the company said late Thursday. China Mobile, the world's largest carrier by subscribers, launched its commercial 3G service in January but only surpassed 1 million users in July.

China Mobile's fortunes may be turning. Last month, more than 2.3 million subscribers used the carrier's 3G services, it said Friday. That was a rise of more than 600,000 from the previous month, by far the fastest growth the company has reported so far.

Bright Lights, Big City: Milwaukee Holiday Lights

The holiday spirit lights up Milwaukee for a festive welcome to the Christmas shopping season.

The 11th annual Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival warms up downtown with thousands of twinkle lights, beginning November 19 with the Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival Kick-Off Extravaganza. The ceremonial lighting takes place at 6 pm in Pere Marquette Park, with live music, entertainment, fireworks, free Jingle Bus rides and a visit from Santa Claus.

From November 19 – January 3, Wisconsin Avenue, Cathedral Square Park, Pere Marquette Park, and Zeidler Union Square are adorned with lights and animated displays. For $1 per person, a Jingle Bus will take visitors on a tour of downtown. The Jingle Bus operates Thursday through Sundays November 20 – Jan 3 from 6 to 9 pm from the Plankinton Arcade at The Shops of Grand Avenue, the Festival’s Warming House location at 161 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Overview of the Adoption Process

Adoption was not permitted at common law. Adoption is now governed by state statute.

The general concept underlying adoption is that we can only have one set of parents at a time. Thus, for adoption to occur, the biological parents must have their parental rights terminated. Parental rights can usually be terminated by a voluntary waiver executed by the biological parents or a court finding that biological parents are unfit to raise the child.

The adoption process usually starts once the parental rights of the natural parents are terminated. This process usually involves filing a petition for adoption with the courts. If a petitioner is married, both spouses must join in the petition for adoption.

The court will then conduct hearings to determine whether the adoptive parents are fit to raise the child. A regular adoption occurs when the adoptive parents comply with all of the procedural requirements.

My 16 year old son was bitten by a friend’s dog. Not a vicious attack and it was purely accidental. The problem we have is that he needed 7 stitches in his nose...we are not happy with the way the wound is healing and are going to consult a Plastic Surgeon to get their opinion of the wound. Problem is we were out of town when this happened and he was seen at a local hospital emergency room...we were not there when the services were performed. The parents of our son's friend took him there for treatment and they waited over 6 hours for treatment...

We don't want to press any charges against the Dog Owners family...and we don't want anything bad to happen to their dog. It was an innocent accident...not a vicious dog by no means.

The Raspberry Lemon Drop

Juice of 2-3 large lemons
4 shots Stoli raspberry vodka

1 TBS sugar + extra for the rim

Rub a little lemon juice along the edge of the martini glasses then dip onto a plate lightly coated with sugar. Shake together the ingredients with lots of ice and serve with a spear of berries.

(Makes 2 drinks)
