Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop Color Management

While Adobe Lightroom has quite a few of the attributes necessary to make it a feasible alternative to Photoshop for many photographers it falls slightly short of the mark in some key areas:

No facility for localized tone corrections (e.g. dodge, burn, and linear grads)

No facility for “creative” sharpening

No doubt other photographers will have have a much longer list, but before adding them they should remember that Lightroom is not intended to replace Photoshop. Nevertheless, the absence of the above features often requires the Lightroom user to make what is known as a round-trip into Photoshop. Unfortunately, for some this trip isn’t always as pain free as it should be. Why?

Much has been written on the topic of Macro photography for those photographers fortunate enough to own a DSLR with macro lenses - but what about if you own a compact point and shoot camera? Can you get great macro shots too?

While the results achievable with a point and shoot camera in macro mode probably won’t compare with a DSLR with a purpose built macro lens I’ve still seen some remarkably good shots with compact cameras (all three shots in this post were taken with compact cameras). Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of yours:

Using A Flash

The art of using the flash is more complex than one might think. Some people assume that you should only use the flash when you are indoors or in a dark setting. In reality, you can use the flash outdoors and in different lighting to get some pretty neat effects. Of course, you will be limited if you only have the on-camera flash to use, but nevertheless, you can still make a big difference in your pictures if you learn how to master the flash.
