clipper's remarks: The drift of this story is about bad administration but it sheds a bit of light on the shortest of lives but also provokes more questions for me. Is there a burial ground in the hospital? Does it have a plaque? What is a "special dignified service" and who provides it?

Hospital bosses have apologised for an "inexcusable failure" after the bodies of seven miscarried and aborted foetuses were kept in a mortuary.

The trust said the standard procedure at the hospital was for foetuses under 24 weeks to be buried or cremated in line with the wishes, where they have been expressed, of mothers and their partners "during a special dignified service".

If "My Computer" takes a really long time to open on your computer, you are most likely experiencing a well-known issue where Windows hangs while trying to search for network folders and printers before displaying anything to you.

Open up Folder Options from the Tools menu in Windows Explorer:

Uncheck the box for "Automatically search for network folders and printers", and close the dialog.

The changes should be immediate, and your problem should be gone.

Streaming BBC iPlayer for all platforms

From today we are pleased to announce that streaming is now available on BBC iPlayer. This means that Windows, Mac and Linux users can stream programmes on iPlayer as long as their computer has the latest version of Flash. Another change is that you do not have to register or sign in any more to download programmes, and Windows XP and Vista users will have an improved version of Download Manager (formerly the Library) available to them.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback over the past months on this messageboard, it has helped us to come up with the new designs and software. This forum will remain open for discussion of the new BBC iPlayer for feedback and suggestions on changes you’d like to see in the future, as we have further plans for next year, including integration of the BBC Radio Player into this site.

The help pages have been updated to reflect these improvements and we hope that more people than ever can enjoy BBC iPlayer.

If you are trying to track down why your computer is running so slooowwwly, try using this simple DOS command from Digital Inspiration to uncover a possible problem:

Type cmd in your Windows Run box.
Type "netstat -b 5 > activity.txt" and press enter.
After say 2 minutes, press Ctrl+C.
Type "activity.txt" on the command line to open the log file in notepad (or your default text editor)

This .txt file will have a record of everything that has made an Internet connection in the last couple of minutes; you can then check your task manager to find out where it is and take care of it.

This is one of the biggest differences between Linux and Windows - so it's no surprise if it confuses you - so don't worry

Linux uses a Unix type directory structure, which means everything is seen as a sub-directory of / (which we call the root directory). When you install a program, it normally gets spread out over a few directories. Anzan is incorrect when he said '/bin' - that is where system binaries go. For user installed programs, the binary files go in /usr/bin, while shared stuff - images, documentation etc, go into /usr/share. Here's a typical run-down of what goes where:

Software binaries (the equivalent to .exe files in Windows) go into /usr/bin/

Software documentation goes into /usr/share/doc/program_name/

Software libraries (the equivalent to Windows' .dll files) go into /usr/lib/

Software data files (images, sounds etc) go into /usr/share/program_name/

With a network there can be both links to a particular guide, and a greater opportunity to find someone they identify with. I hope networking doesn't overwhelm the personal nature of quitting. It is a decision only the smoker can make, and often they need to be reminded by someone they trust.

If Australian researchers have their way, a support group of friends and counsellors will automatically text you to say "No, don't do it".

It's an example of 'persuasive technology', using technology to influence human behaviour.

The National Health and Medical Research Council-funded project looks to improve the online counselling service, Quit Coach.

Benda, who outlined the new system at a recent Human Communication Science Network workshop, says studies of Quit Coach found users were not returning to the site.

Benda says the new system is unique because it combines web-based counselling with a social network and mobile technologies such as SMS and MSN.

"You might get into a crisis situation where you could broadcast a message using SMS to your [online] Quit Coach, which your whole support group will see," he says.
