The Truth About Jobs That No One Wants To Tell You

Unemployment will almost certainly in double-digits next year -- and may remain there for some time.

In other words, ten percent unemployment really means twenty percent underemployment or anxious employment. All of which translates directly into late payments on mortgages, credit cards, auto and student loans, and loss of health insurance.

But if government doesn’t spend more right now and get Americans back to work, we could be out of work for years. And the debt will be with us even longer. And politics could get much uglier.

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Chinese researchers have unearthed the fossil of a bird-like dinosaur with four wings in northeastern China, which they suggest is a missing link in dinosaurs' evolution into birds.

"This finding suggests that birds are likely to be descended from a kind of small-sized four-winged dinosaur about 160 million years ago," Xu said.

The transition from dinosaurs to birds is still poorly understood because of the lack of well-preserved fossils, and many scientists say bird-like dinosaurs appear too late in the fossil record to be the true ancestors of birds.

The Chinese researchers believe the fossil is the oldest bird-like dinosaur reported so far, and older than Archaeopteryx, the earliest known bird.

"The presence of such a species at this time in the fossil record effectively disputes the argument that bird-like dinosaurs appeared too late to be the ancestors of birds," they wrote.

Unidentified Creature: Panama Teens Discover Alien-Like Animal (VIDEO)

Four teenagers in Panama claim they encountered a creature that was photographed, dead on a rock.

It appears to have an animal-like head, but a strange body with skinny, human like arms. Some say it's an alien while others say it's an animal that's never been seen before.

The teens said, the creature was alive when they found it and it started coming after them, so they threw rocks and sticks at it, killing it.

I've been accused of being too demanding. I've been reminded that "the perfect is the enemy of the good." Perhaps that is true. But every other modern democracy on earth has managed to get to the proper endpoint of health care reform. Is it really too much to demand that we at least get to the proper beginning?

Employment fell in 42 states, led by Texas, where employers cut 62,200 jobs. Michigan employers cut payrolls by 42,900, and those in Georgia shed 35,000. The most hiring happened in North Carolina (7,000), Montana (5,100), and West Virginia (2,800).

It turns out that in eight states, plus the District of Columbia, getting beaten up by your spouse is a pre-existing condition.

Under the cold logic of the insurance industry, it makes perfect sense: If you are in a marriage with someone who has beaten you in the past, you're more likely to get beaten again than the average person and are therefore more expensive to insure.

In 1994, then-Rep. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), now a member of Senate leadership, had his staff survey 16 insurance companies. He found that eight would not write health, life or disability policies for women who have been abused. In 1995, the Boston Globe found that Nationwide, Allstate, State Farm, Aetna, Metropolitan Life, The Equitable Companies, First Colony Life, The Prudential and the Principal Financial Group had all either canceled or denied coverage to women who'd been beaten.

U.S. workers' health costs double over decade: study

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. workers who have health insurance for their families through employers have seen premiums more than double in the last decade, according to a survey released on Tuesday.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average premium for a company-provided family health insurance plan rose from $5,791 in 1999 to $13,375, a 131 percent jump.

Employees' portion of those costs have risen accordingly, from $1,543 on average a decade ago to $3,515 this year.

the survey misses one big issue: it cannot account for the number of employees who lost their coverage because they were fired or their company went out of business.

among those companies still offering health plans, 21 percent said they had reduced benefits or asked workers to pay additional costs while 15 percent said they had increased workers' share of the insurance premium

A colossal statue of Apollo, the Greek god of the sun, light, music and poetry, has emerged in southwestern Turkey.

Split in two huge marble fragments, divided along the bust and the lower part of the sculpture, the 1st century A.D. statue was unearthed at the World Heritage Site of Hierapolis, now called Pamukkale.

Standing at more than four meters (13 feet) in height, the newly discovered statue, which is missing the head and the arms, might have been one of the most impressive sights in the city.

As shown in these pictures, the bust depicts the god wearing a wonderfully draped tunic. The cloth has a transparency effect to reveal mighty muscles. Just click here for the full story.

Obama's healthcare agenda turns out to be a deal that usually red-state Wal-Mart has decided to buy into.

This "pay or play" plan puts Wal-Mart on the side of the unions and liberals and has evoked a virtual declaration of war from the National Retail Federation, whose officers reported themselves "astonished" at what they considered Wal-Mart's "catastrophic" endorsement of a government mandate that most retailers -- once including Wal-Mart -- have long considered anathema.

So why Wal-Mart's big switch?

The company has made the same kind of calculation when it comes to health insurance, not only to forestall bad press but because an employer mandate actually saves the company money when compared with the more conservative, small-government scheme being put together by the Senate Finance Committee

An employer mandate is a cheaper, simpler and more universal way to cover those workers who cannot now afford health insurance.
