Lehman Brothers announced its second top-level Middle East appointment in a month, naming Philip Lynch as chief executive officer for the Middle East and North Africa. Lynch, who co-led Lehman's equities business in Europe and the Middle East, will relocate from London to Dubai. The other equities co-head, Rachid Bouzouba, was named sole head of equities for Europe and the Middle East. Current Middle East chief Jameel Akhrass becomes vice chairman for the Middle East and North Africa, but remains Middle East investment banking chief.

Symantec to expand research initiatives in India

Hyderabad: Symantec Corporation is set to expand its research and development mandate out of India, with a focus on new generation products and customisation requirements for markets in the region.

The Vice-President of India product Operations, Symantec Corporation, Shantanu Ghosh, told Business Line that the company researchers are working on a host of new products from its development centres based in Pune and Chennai covering both enterprises and individual users.

“We now have over 2,500 people working on a wide range of products and contributing significantly to intellectual property (IP) creation. Many of them may eventually lead to patents. As a part of this, we have set up a committee that will assist in patent filings,” he said.

Chennai bookies bet Rs 300 cr on final

CHENNAI: Nearly Rs 2,500 crore was up for grabs on Sunday as the IPL final between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals kept bookies across the country on their toes.

"For bookmakers in Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Agra (the major centres for betting), this was a mega event. Nearly Rs 2,500 crore was at stake, with almost Rs 300 crore from Chennai. It is estimated that a total of Rs 20,000 crore was wagered during the 44 days of IPL matches," a cricket broker told The Times Of India.

Speculation was high for Rajasthan Royals after their 12 victories in the Twenty-20 matches played in the Indian Premier Leagues, but Chennai Super Kings emerged as favourites for bookmakers across India after their stunning victory in the semi-final against Kings Punjab XI.

A flamboyant archaeologist known worldwide for his trademark Indiana Jones hat believes he has identified the site where Cleopatra is buried.

Now, with a team of 12 archaeologists and 70 excavators, Zahi Hawass, 60, the head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, has begun the search for her tomb.

In addition, after a breakthrough two weeks ago, Hawass hopes to find Cleopatra's lover, the Roman general Mark Antony, sharing her last resting place at the site of a temple, the Taposiris Magna, 28 miles west of Alexandria.

Militants vow war on Pak if any retreat on Kashmir

Top militant leaders of the Lashkar-e-Toiba and Hizbul Mujahideen have warned Pakistan government against softening its stance towards India and threatened to wage a "war in Islamabad and Lahore" if there is any "retreat" on the Kashmir issue.

Speaking on the eve of the resumption of the composite dialogue process between India and Pakistan, Syed Salahuddin, the chief of the militant conglomerate United Jehad Council, said that the Kashmir issue's importance had increased as India, Israel and the US had made "Pakistan their target".

US foreclosure filings surge 65 percent in April

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- More U.S. homeowners fell behind on mortgage payments last month, driving the number of homes facing foreclosure up 65 percent versus the same month last year and contributing to a deepening slide in home values, a research company said Tuesday.

Nationwide, 243,353 homes received at least one foreclosure-related filing in April, up 65 percent from 147,708 in the same month last year and up 4 percent since March, RealtyTrac Inc. said.
