Visitors to Kew will be able to take a breathtaking journey from the intricate root system of trees to the very top of the tree canopy.

The 200 metre long walkway takes you underground to the Rhizotron where the trees root systems are explained with models, video displays and facts surrounding these huge organisms.

400 tonnes of steel was used to build the walkway

Study Finds Big Social Factor in Quitting Smoking

For years, smokers have been exhorted to take the initiative and quit: use a nicotine patch, chew nicotine gum, take a prescription medication that can help, call a help line, just say no. But a new study finds that stopping is seldom an individual decision.

Smokers tend to quit in groups, the study finds, which means smoking cessation programs should work best if they focus on groups rather than individuals. It also means that people may help many more than just themselves by quitting: quitting can have a ripple effect prompting an entire social network to break the habit.

Bonifacio Torres enjoys a cigarette alone in New York, but many smokers find they give up smoking as part of a group.

Silicon chip alternative developed

WASHINGTON: Every household is filled with dozens of silicon-based electronics, whose main component is usually a silicon-based transistor. But now, a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute student’s invention could replace this technology with a new generation of transistors that will not only cut energy consumption but also work under extreme conditions.

Weixiao Huang has made a breakthrough by developing a new transistor that uses a compound material known as gallium nitride (GaN), which has remarkable material properties and may act as a better alternative to silicon chip.

Google Co-Founder Spends $5 Million For Seat In Space

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - The company that sends wealthy tourists to the International Space Station has said that Google co-founder Sergey Brin has paid $5 million to reserve a seat on a future flight.

Space Adventures made the announcement Wednesday in Manhattan.

Company officials also say they have struck a deal with the Russian space agency to launch the first entirely private Soyuz flight to the space station in 2011. Two seats will be available.

Myanmar allows U.S. aid to arrive

Cancer Patients Should Steer Clear of Antioxidants

TUESDAY, May 27 (HealthDay News) — A new review of existing research suggests that cancer patients undergoing radiation or chemotherapy avoid supplements with high levels of antioxidants.

Although multivitamins may be all right in some cases, even green tea and vitamin A or E supplements can spell trouble, said review author Dr. Brian Lawenda, clinical director of radiation oncology at Naval Medical Center in San Diego.

The supplements “may decrease the effectiveness of radiation or chemotherapy or even make the toxicities of these treatments worse,” Lawenda said. “I would recommend that you do not take these agents during chemo or radiation.”

American Women More Worried About Obesity Than Cancer

A new survey has found that American women are more concerned about their weight than developing cancer.

The nationwide survey of more than 3,000 women, conducted by Meredith Corporation and NBC Universal, showed that 56 percent of U.S. women are more concerned about their diet and weight than developing cancer, reports the New York Daily News.

Only 23 percent said they were worried about the disease, significantly less than those who said they were concerned with eating well, while 20 percent expressed concerns about heart health.

Cellphone Tracking Study Shows We’re Creatures of Habit

New research that makes creative use of sensitive location-tracking data from 100,000 cellphones in Europe suggests that most people can be found in one of just a few locations at any time, and that they do not generally go far from home.

“Individuals display significant regularity, because they return to a few highly frequented locations, such as home or work,” the researchers found.

That might seem like science and mountains of data being marshaled to prove the obvious. But the researchers say their work, which also shows that people exhibit similar patterns whether they travel long distances or short ones, could open new frontiers in fields like disease tracking and urban planning.
