All cancers are genetic in origin. When genes are working properly, cell growth is tightly regulated, as if a stoplight told cells to divide only so many times and no more. A cancer occurs when something causes a mutation in the genes that limit cell growth or that repair DNA damage.

This is true even if the carcinogen is environmental, like tobacco smoke or radon, or if the cause is viral, like Helicobacter pylori or human papillomavirus.

American Women More Worried About Obesity Than Cancer

A new survey has found that American women are more concerned about their weight than developing cancer.

The nationwide survey of more than 3,000 women, conducted by Meredith Corporation and NBC Universal, showed that 56 percent of U.S. women are more concerned about their diet and weight than developing cancer, reports the New York Daily News.

Only 23 percent said they were worried about the disease, significantly less than those who said they were concerned with eating well, while 20 percent expressed concerns about heart health.

Smokers often say that smoking a cigarette helps them concentrate and feel more alert. But years of tobacco use may have the opposite effect, dimming the speed and accuracy of a person's thinking ability and bringing down their IQ, according to a new study led by University of Michigan researchers.

The association between long-term smoking and diminished mental proficiency in 172 alcoholic and non-alcoholic men was a surprising finding from a study that set out to examine alcoholism's long-term effect on the brain and thinking skills.

Childhood Obesity May Be Leveling Off

TUESDAY, May 27 (HealthDay News) — In what may be the first good news in the battle against obesity among America’s children, federal researchers report that the latest data suggest that the number of overweight kids may be leveling off.

However, experts caution there’s still much to be done to improve the health of American children because the number of youngsters who are overweight today is still triple what it was in the 1960s and 1970s.

“The rates are still very high. But this study suggests there may be some cause for optimism as the rate appears fairly level over eight years,” said study author Cynthia Ogden, an epidemiologist at the National Center for Health Statistics, whose findings are published in the May 28 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The government reported Thursday that home prices fell 3.1% in the first quarter, the worst quarterly drop on record.

Because home prices are depreciating, the "real" mortgage rate for homebuyers is about 15%, Sonders says.

As bad as that sounds, the housing market is going to get worse, says Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist at Charles Schwab & Co.

While buyers have the advantage in today's market, using borrowed money to buy a depreciating asset is a dicey decision, as is lending money to someone in that position, she says.

Maddox, an artist and cabinetmaker in Medford, Ore., has been tinkering with pulse jet engines for seven years now. He's recently started bolting them to old-school cruiser bicycles and selling them on eBay, and a video of him riding one is bouncing around the blogosphere.

Study Finds Big Social Factor in Quitting Smoking

For years, smokers have been exhorted to take the initiative and quit: use a nicotine patch, chew nicotine gum, take a prescription medication that can help, call a help line, just say no. But a new study finds that stopping is seldom an individual decision.

Smokers tend to quit in groups, the study finds, which means smoking cessation programs should work best if they focus on groups rather than individuals. It also means that people may help many more than just themselves by quitting: quitting can have a ripple effect prompting an entire social network to break the habit.

Bonifacio Torres enjoys a cigarette alone in New York, but many smokers find they give up smoking as part of a group.

Beer Drinking May Speed Pancreatic Cancer Onset

(HealthDay News) -- Heavy smoking and drinking, especially beer, may hasten the onset of pancreatic cancer, according to researchers who presented their data Tuesday at the Digestive Disease Week 2008 conference in San Diego.

Beer appears to exert a stronger influence than hard liquor or wine in lowering the age of onset of pancreatic cancer, said researcher Dr. Michelle A. Anderson, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Michigan.

Anderson and her colleagues evaluated patients from The Pancreatic Cancer Collaborative Registry, a multi-center, international patient registry, looking at whether the patients drank or smoked, and if so, how much and what type of liquor.
