It's enough to make a girl want to run for president …

With Hillary Clinton edging ever closer to the won't-finish line in the Democratic primary, the inevitable rending of garments that a woman may never again mount a successful run for the presidency has begun.

The folks claiming we've allowed the presidency to slip through our fingers arrive at this conclusion by pressing the same flawed syllogism: The only viable woman candidate thus far has been Hillary; Hillary did not win; ergo there will never be another viable woman candidate.

If the Clinton candidacy has taught us anything, however, it's that a woman can straddle all those irreconcilable demands and still win.

1969 May 15. "Bloody Thursday" in People's Park. Governor Ronald Reagan sent in the National Guard to reclaim People's Park from 6,000 protesters in Berkeley, California, who had occupied the space and created the park. Police gunfire killed a bystander, James Rector, blinded another, and injured dozens.

Reagan called the Berkeley campus "a haven for communist sympathizers, protesters and sex deviants." He considered the creation of the park a direct leftist challenge to the property rights of the University, and he found in it an opportunity to make good on his campaign promise.

Protesters gather in Salt Lake as Pres. Bush visits Utah

While President Bush was in Park City, protesters gathered in downtown Salt Lake City to hold a peace rally.

There were not as many protesters tonight as there were in August 2006, the last time the president visited Utah, but several hundred people, possibly more than 1,000, gathered tonight to protest the president and the war.

Former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson said, "We raise our voices in unison today because President Bush, Vice President Cheney and other members of the administration have engaged with the sad complacency of Congress and much of the mainstream media in unprecedented egregious human rights violations, vast deceit of Congress and the American people, astounding crimes against peace, of the same nature as those for which men were convicted during the Nuremberg Trials, war crimes, crimes against humanity."

They gathered to cheer, shout and hold signs in a rally for peace.

LIMA, Peru, May 28, 2008 (ENS) - The Peruvian Amazon, a region that holds some of the most pristine and biodiverse rainforests on Earth, continues to face an unprecedented wave of new oil and gas exploration.

Peru recently released eight new Amazon oil blocks as part of its 2008 bidding round. According to analysis by Save America's Forests, that brings the total to 64 oil and gas blocks in Peru's vast Amazon region.

"Oil and gas blocks now blanket nearly 75 percent of the Peruvian Amazon," said Dr. Matt Finer, staff ecologist at Save America's Forests in Washington, DC, who is now in Peru. "That is over 123 million acres of megadiverse rainforest, roughly the size of California and Maine combined."

These blocks are auctioned by the state oil company Perupetro as license contracts for the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons. They now sprawl across both protected areas and indigenous territories.

After sending off the U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, the city of Yokosuka braces for the arrival of its replacement, the George Washington, in August, which will be the first nuclear-powered vessel to use a Japanese city as a home port.

Yokosuka Mayor Ryoichi Kabaya basically supports the planned deployment of the 102,000-ton carrier. But the fire that recently broke out on the carrier in the Pacific injuring two sailors has heightened safety concerns among the citizens.

The U.S. military has used Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, as a home port for three airplane carriers, including the Kitty Hawk, since 1973.

But more people in Yokosuka have shown interest in the planned deployment of the George Washington, as the number of signatures calling for a referendum rose to some 48,000 this year from some 37,000 two years ago in the city, whose population is some 420,000.

Inspired by this post, we've decided to devote a week to the analysis of studies from the history of psychology.

Today we consider the work of Millicent Washburn Shinn, one of the first women admitted to the University of California, Berkeley (in 1874), and the first to earn a Ph.D. there. In 1890, her niece Ruth was born, and Shinn spent hours carefully observing the child's every behavior. This "large mass of data" became the basis for a book that was welcomed by the scholars of the day, The Biography of a Baby, which, while not the first of its kind, certainly was one of the most thorough scientific accounts of a baby's cognitive and physical development in its time.

Shinn describes Ruth's sixth month as "The Dawn of Intelligence." Prior to this time, the baby was primarily exploring her senses, but in the sixth month, Ruth exhibited behaviors that Shinn interpreted as "intelligent."

(05-28) 20:17 PDT San Francisco -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she will step in if necessary to make sure the presidential nomination fight between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama does not reach the Democratic National Convention - though she believes it could be resolved as early as next week.

Pelosi predicted Wednesday that a presidential nominee will emerge in the week after the final Democratic primaries on June 3, but she said "I will step in" if there is no resolution by late June regarding the seating of delegates from Florida and Michigan, the two states that defied party rules by holding early primaries.

"Because we cannot take this fight to the convention," she said. "It must be over before then."

Pelosi said she is confident the Democratic National Committee's rules committee, which meets in Washington on Saturday, will resolve the issue of Florida and Michigan.

McGill and UBC scientists explain process that can turn ordinary eruptions into global climatic disasters

Researchers from McGill University and the University of British Columbia (UBC) have simulated in the lab the process that can turn ordinary volcanic eruptions into so-called “supervolcanoes,” with potentially devastating worldwide impact.

Supervolcanoes are orders of magnitude greater than any volcanic eruption in historic times. They are capable of causing long-lasting change to weather, threatening the extinction of species, and covering huge areas with lava and ash.

Using volcanic models made of plexiglass filled with corn syrup, the researchers simulated how magma in a volcano’s magma chamber might behave if the roof of the chamber caved in during an eruption.
