A leading democrat says Americans need to get used to paying $5 to $6 a gallon for their gas.

Impeached judge and leading Democrat Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Miramar) confessed this week that democrats have no answers to the skyrocketing gas prices.

I predict to you that gas prices will be as much as $5 before the end of this year and they will go to $6 at some point next year

"When they go to $6 it will fluctuate between $5 and $6 and more for some time to come. That's the harsh reality no matter what law we pass," he said.

"There ain't no answer, OK? ... All the talk is feel good talk."

LTC Allen West, the Republican candidate for Florida's 22nd Congressional District, offered this response:

There can be no doubt as to why this Congress under the presumed leadership of Speaker Pelosi is a collection of whining losers, and we as the American people should not have to suffer for their lack of courage, competence, and character.

Great post from Jeff Emmanuel. This is the same Democrat Rep who recently admitted Democrats had "stretched the facts" about the feasibility and prudence of a quick withdrawal from Iraq, just to win the election.

Now he makes this curious claim:

Oh no, not on Mexicans coming into the US, that would be racist. They are cracking down on Central Americans coming into Mexico illegally.

Central Americans without documents now face increased security within Mexico, including checks on the train for stowaways.

The result: The number of non-Mexican migrants stopped by the U.S. Border Patrol has dropped almost 60 percent from 2005, despite increased detention efforts.

Mexico itself is also seeing fewer illegal immigrants — 120,000 were arrested last year, a 50 percent drop from 2005

Since President Felipe Calderon took office two years ago, Mexico has added more soldiers and federal police on its border with Guatemala and more immigration and military checkpoints throughout the south.

the same President Calderon who famously said last fall that the Mexican government would…

“energetically protest unilateral actions” of the U.S. Congress on the immigration front that he said “exacerbate the persecution of undocumented Mexicans in the U.S.”

(2008-04-02) — The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, retired pastor to Sen. Barack Obama, said today that politicians “are getting after Big Oil because it’s black,” noting that “you don’t hear nobody talking smack like that on Big Milk.”

The Rev. Wright said he came out of seclusion to make the remarks out of concern that substantive presidential campaign issues like energy policy might push discussion of America’s racial divisions out of the headlines.

“Milk now costs an average of $3.70 per gallon,” said the Rev. Wright, “while gasoline is still less than $3.30 at the pump, and yet oil gets blamed for all our problems, from global warming to the war in Iraq. People say it’s slimy, dirty, toxic…but you don’t hear them dissin’ milk like that.”

The former pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago asked rhetorically, “Why don’t we see posters of Brooke Shields or Mariska Hargitay sporting an oil mustache? I rest my case.”

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila was charged Thursday with 19 counts in a campaign finance probe, including conspiracy to violate U.S. federal campaign laws and giving false testimony to the FBI.

The indictment also charged 12 others associated with Acevedo's Popular Democratic Party as a result of a two-year grand jury investigation, acting U.S. Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodriguez said.

The 13 are accused of conspiring to raise money illegally to pay off Acevedo's campaign debts from his 2000 campaign to be the U.S. island territory's nonvoting member of Congress.

"The governor will be permitted to turn himself in deference to his position," she said.

A Harvard University-educated attorney and career politician, Acevedo, 45, served in Washington as the island's nonvoting delegate to Congress, and was elected governor in 2004 after campaigning on an anti-corruption platform.

The speeding freight train carrying toxic waste liability for makers, sellers and purchasers of compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) was only faintly audible in the distance last spring when this column first warned of it. Now we’re beginning to see that environmentalist-stoked train speed toward its victims, who President Bush and Congress just finished tying to the tracks.

The energy bill enacted last December mandates that traditional incandescent bulbs be phased out starting in 2012. CFLs are pretty much the only alternative.

Clean Water Action told the media in 1997

that the mercury level in tuna is so high that a 35-pound child eating more than 2-ounces a week would exceed the EPA’s “safe” level

Environmental Defense began pooh-poohing mercury concerns stating, “In short, the exposure from breaking a CFL is in about the same range as the exposure from eating a can or two of tuna fish.”

Two-ounces of tuna used to be a horror, but in the name of CFLs, two cans became no problem.

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today blasted the Majority’s decision to shut down the House Republicans’ earmark reform website, http://www.earmarkreform.house.gov

House Republicans launched the website to serve as a hub for news and information regarding House GOP efforts to hold the Majority to its promises to fundamentally overhaul the taxpayer-funded earmark system.

Boehner wrote to Beard this afternoon, questioning his sudden decision to shut down the earmark reform website.

“[The] reversal comes just days after an independent report revealed that the freshman Democratic class in the House has been ‘showered in pork’ by the leaders of the current majority,”

“[The] reversal comes just weeks after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) – who as leader of the Democrat-controlled House has the power to shut down the earmark process in our chamber immediately – declined to join me and more than 150 other House members in supporting a total moratorium on all earmarks.”
