This big tent just got a little smaller.

The state party is asking the Democratic National Committee to unseat Debra Bartoshevich, an emergency room nurse from Racine County who was locally elected in May to be a delegate for Hillary Rodham Clinton at the party’s national convention in Denver in August.

“I still very much want to be a delegate for Hillary,” Bartoshevich said Wednesday night. “I still support Hillary Clinton as the nominee. I hope to still go (to Denver). All I can do is sit and wait.”

Bartoshevich made public her support for McCain over Democrat Barack Obama in an interview with the Journal Sentinel this month. Bartoshevich said that she felt the nominating process had been unfair to Clinton and that Obama was inexperienced and risky.

As an avid supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic primaries, Debra Bartoshevich is not alone in her frustration over Clinton's defeat.

She’s not alone in refusing to support Barack Obama.

And she’s not entirely alone in saying she’ll vote this fall for Republican John McCain instead.

But what makes her unusual is that she holds these views as an elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Denver this summer.

Joe Wineke, chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, reacted with disbelief when first told Friday afternoon that one of his state party delegates is now a McCain supporter.

“Not a delegate? To the national convention?” said Wineke

“We have a Clinton national (convention) delegate who says she’s voting for John McCain?” Wineke repeated, for clarification. “I’ve never heard of such a thing.”

“No self-respecting woman should wish or work for the success of a party that ignores her — that’s by Susan B. Anthony,” said Bartoshevich

Remember, Obama had Alyce Palmur removed from the ballot here in Chicago so he had no one to challenge him….SEE A PATTERN?

WOMEN: Dean is also pressuring Hillary to release her delegates! THIS IS UNPRECEDENTED AND UNCALLED FOR AND MALICIOUS! For every delegate that he takes, he is diminishing the women’s movement and stripping us of the delegates we elected to represent our votes for HILLARY!

Yesterday, CBS' Katie Couric was honored by the Sewall-Belmont House and Museum at their Alice Award Luncheon Gala.

Some thoughts from Couric at the event:

However you feel about her politics, I feel that Sen. Clinton received some of the most unfair, hostile coverage I've ever seen.

Couric went on to say that latent sexism contributed, in part, to Hillary's defeat.

She referred to one "prominent member of the commentariat" who said he "found it hard to be objective when it came to Obama."

"That's your job," she remembers thinking when hearing this, before suggesting that he "find another line of work." (Was it Chris Matthews? Or was it Lee Cowan?)

Channel 4's Barbara Harrison, the emcee and a longtime friend, said, "Katie, you're a real fighter, and I'm watching where you're going next." (Does she know something we don't?!?)

Just 17% of voters nationwide believe that most reporters try to offer unbiased coverage of election campaigns

The perception that reporters are advocates rather than observers is held by 82% of Republicans, 56% of Democrats, and 69% of voters not affiliated with either major party

76% of voters believe the media has too much power and influence over elections

Eighty-seven percent (87%) of Republicans believe the media has too much influence along with 80% of unaffiliated voters and 65% of Democrats.

Voters have little doubt as to who is benefitting from the media coverage this year—Barack Obama

(54%) say Obama

(22%) say McCain

14% say that Hillary got the best treatment

44% believe most reporters will try to help Obama while only 13% believe that most will try to help McCain

Even Democrats tend to believe their candidate will receive better treatment—27% of those in Obama’s party believe most reporters will try to help him win while only 16% believe they will help McCain

And McCain has historically been one of the media's favorite republicans. Can you imagine the difference if the republicans those a candidate the media didn't like?

(2008-05-07) — Sen. Hillary Clinton aborted her White House bid today blaming what she called a “vast mathematical conspiracy” that secretly works to keep women out of positions of power.

The former First Lady said she would return to the U.S. Senate and introduce legislation to help female presidential candidates “breakthrough the math ceiling.”

Party insiders pressured her to pull out after Tuesday’s crushing defeat in the North Carolina primary and her surprisingly thin victory in Indiana.

“It’s beyond coincidence that Barack Obama has more votes, more delegates and more money than I do,” said a tearful Sen. Clinton at a news conference announcing her withdrawal from the race. “It would take a willing suspension of disbelief to think that I was forced out of this race because a majority of Democrats don’t want me to be president.”

“I’ve always heard that figures don’t lie,” she said, “but apparently they’ll do whatever it takes to crush the hopes and dreams of American women.”

NYT shuns the Constitution

At least they're open about it: the New York Times disdains Supreme Court justices who hew to the principles upon which this country was founded. The Times's admission came in the course of an editorial calling on Obama and Clinton to put aside their bickering and focus on beating John McCain. That is vital, in the Times's view, given McCain's pledge to nominate Supreme Court justices in the mold of John Roberts and Samuel Alito.

Writes the Times [emphasis added]:

Mr. McCain predictably criticized liberal judges, vowed strict adherence to the Founders’ views and promised to appoint more judges in the mold of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito. That is just what the country does not need.

So in the Gray Lady's mind, "strict adherence to the Founders’ views" is "just what the country does not need." Not that this comes as a surprise. Still, it's stunning to see in black and white that, as far as the Times is concerned, the Constitution really shouldn't stand for too much.

Here's what jumps out at me from the first wave of exit polls that have been released to the Edison-Mitsofky consortium:

Forget the horse race numbers for a moment: if the surveys are accurate, the polarization within the Democratic Party has reached critical levels. Nearly six in ten Obama supporters in Indiana say they would be dissatisfied if Clinton were the nominee -- that's (I believe) the high percentage of Obama supporters who have ever said that.

In both IN and NC, two thirds of Clinton supporters say they'd be dissatisfied if Obama were the nominee -- I believe that's the highest number recorded for that question, too.

The percentage of Clinton voters who say they'd choose McCain over Obama in a general election is approaching 40% in Indiana. Put it another way: in North Carolina, less than HALF of folks who voted today for Hillary Clinton are ready to say today that they'd definitely vote for Obama in a general election.

estimates that seating of the entire delegations from the two disputed states will give her a pledged delegate lead of around 55 delegates

Clinton controls the Rules and Bylaws Committee with at least 50% of its members supporting her

Obama supporters won’t take this lying down, of course. They could protest the decision to the Credentials Committee of the Democratic National Convention

One hundred sixty-one of the committee’s 186(!) members are allotted to each campaign in a ratio equal to the performance in each state contest

should the Rules and Bylaws committee vote to seat the Michigan and Florida delegations, there could be a battle over the make up of the Credentials Committee itself

the remaining 25 members of the Credentials Committee are appointed directly by DNC Chairman Howard Dean
