A 1995 piece in the liberal Chicago Reader basically refutes Obama's statements that he never heard Pastor Jeremiah Wright invoke his racist rants and also provides some additional insight into Obama's early years in politics.

"That's just how white folks will do you," Obama writes.

"We have some wonderful preachers in town--preachers who continue to inspire me--preachers who are magnificent at articulating a vision of the world as it should be.

"The right wing, the Christian right, has done a good job of building these organizations of accountability, much better than the left or progressive forces have. But it's always easier to organize around intolerance, narrow-mindedness, and false nostalgia. And they also have hijacked the higher moral ground with this language of family values and moral responsibility.

Collectivist? Check:

But individual actions, individual dreams, are not sufficient. We must unite in collective action, build collective institutions and organizations."

"I recall John telling that story when we first got together in 1971, when were talking about every conceivable thing that had ever happened to us when we were in prison" Swindle told me a few minutes ago. "Most of us had been kept apart or in small groups. Then, in 1970, they moved us into the big cell. And when we all got to see each other and talk to each other directly, instead of tapping through walls, we had 24 hours a day, seven days a week to talk to each other, and we shared stories. I vaguely recall that story being told, among other stories."

"I remember it from prison," Swindle continued. "There were several stories similar to that in which guards — a very few, I might add — showed compassion to the prisoners. It was rare, and I never met one, but some of the guys did."

As for the people who are questioning McCain's account, Swindle said, "That's garbage. These people are desperate."

Yesterday, I talked to Bud Day, a Medal of Honor recipient who was in a POW cell with John McCain in Vietnam. At the end of our conversation, I asked him about the cross-in-the-dirt controversy. He said he hadn't heard of any controversy. So I asked: When was the first time you heard McCain tell this story? His response: "I heard that story in 1970, 1971—back in that time frame. Anybody who says it's not true is full of..." Here he used some salty language.

Solzhenitsyn Cross-in-Dirt story never happened

There's been a ton of buzz on the web for the last day or so -- beginning with this Daily Kos diary

But it turns out that this episode probably never happened to Solzhenitsyn at all, and according to a Solzhenitsyn biographer it appears nowhere in his published writing. Columbia University professor Michael Scammell, the author of Solzhenitsyn: A Biography, says the episode "never happened," and didn't appear in Solzhenitsyn's book, Gulag Archipelago, either.

One key source being cited on the internets right now for the story that this supposedly happened to Solzhenitsyn is this sermon by Luke Veronis, an American priest who preached it in Albania in March of 1997. It was reprinted in a journal called In communion.

He says Veronis' telling of the tale doesn't fit with what actually happened to Solzhenitsyn "in any way."

"Nobody who's read Gulag Archipelago knows that story,"

This never happened to Solzhenitsyn, and there's no way McCain could have picked it up from his works.

Where this gets creepy, though, is the persistent focus on Cantor's faith. We should associate Cantor with Abramoff, the Democrats tell us, because "Both Abramoff and Cantor are Jewish". Then we get this item that is supposed to make us fear Cantor:

At Fundraiser, Jack Abramoff Named Sandwich After Eric Cantor -- Cantor Asked To Switch Sandwiches. "At a January 2003 fundraiser for Cantor, who had just become chief deputy whip, Abramoff unveiled the Eric Cantor sandwich, 'a tuna-based stacker,' which, lamentably, was 'not quite [the] power lunch befitting' the only Jewish Republican in the House. Hence a request by Cantor ... to switch his eponymous sandwich to roast beef on challah, 'a deli special that exudes Jewish power.'"

NASA: 70% of climate change due to Pacific oscillations, not CO2

What this means is no matter how much you change your CO2 footprint, how much you try to be CO2 green, no matter how much liberal governments tax you - you cannot save the planet from its natural cycles.

Say they reduced the CO2 25%. Say the CO2 is the driver for the remaining 30% of Global Warming (which it cannot be, but let’s just be only half as ridiculous as the IPCC), then all that effort would only impact 7.5% of the forces driving the global climate. The other 92.5% would roll on, impervious to the effort. And since CO2 is not 100% of the remaining 30% of the equation (more like 10%), a more realistic expectation is that all the suffering that would go into dropping CO2 levels by 25% would result in a less than 1% change in the forces driving our climate.

It has been scientifically demonstrated that 70% of the Global Warming in the last century (and cooling in the last decade) is due to the Pacific Ocean Oscillations, not CO2:

One necessary result of low climate sensitivity is that the radiative forcing from greenhouse gas emissions in the last century is not nearly enough to explain the upward trend of 0.7 deg. C in the last 100 years.

On this issue, it can be shown with a simple climate model that small cloud fluctuations assumed to occur with two modes of natural climate variability — the El Nino/La Nina phenomenon (Southern Oscillation), and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation — can explain 70% of the warming trend since 1900, as well as the nature of that trend: warming until the 1940s, no warming until the 1970s, and resumed warming since then.

It takes a few seconds to digest this sight: The son of a Hamas MP who is also the most popular figure in that extremist Islamic organization, a young man who assisted his father for years in his political activities, has become a rank-and-file Christian. Is that the justification for the suicide attacks?

Americans for Prosperity have another global-warming hypocrisy moment for voters. Earlier this month, they caught Al Gore riding in big limousines left idling outside of the venue for his speech on energy conservation and emissions cuts. Today, they show Barack Obama using the kind of cars that he insists the rest of us have to eschew:

As the graphics concede, the Secret Service selects the vehicles used by the candidates in most cases. Sports-utility vehicles give better protection to the occupants and have the kind of power that allows them to quickly get out of an area when trouble develops. No one really resents Obama’s use of these vehicles for his safety and the safety of his family — but the rest of us would like to make that choice for ourselves as well.

The epithet of “arrogant” would be the tail pinned forever to him and would appear in every single news story. Should a Republican bespeak of himself in such terms, he’d be branded the next Hitler leading us all to ruin.

According to an op-ed in the New York Time called "President Apostate," Barack Hussein Obama was indeed born a Muslim:

As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood.

Of course, as most Americans understand it, Senator Obama is not a Muslim. He chose to become a Christian

None of us chose the religion we are born into. If we want to discuss Obama's religion, then by all means ask why he chose a Marxism-tainted bastardization of Christianity when he was an adult

That simply shouldn't have mattered... until, as Charles Johnson notes, the Obama campaign was caught lying about his never having been a Muslim on his own Web site:

It shows an Obama campaign that has very little faith of the ability of the American people to think for themselves.

Barack Obama may have been born a Muslim, but he chose to become a liar. To most of us, that counts far more against him.

Wright Jr. One congregant stood out amid the flowers and finery: Senator Barack Obama, there to honor the man who led him from skeptic to self-described Christian.

He had sampled various faiths but adopted none until he met Mr. Wright, a dynamic pastor who preached Afrocentric theology, dabbled in radical politics and delivered music-and-profanity-spiked sermons.

It is hard to imagine, though, how Mr. Obama can truly distance himself from Mr. Wright. The Christianity that Mr. Obama adopted at Trinity has infused not only his life, but also his campaign

"Jeremiah is trying to defend his congregation and the work of his ministry by saying what he is saying now," the source added.

Who's right, Obama or Wright?

Two quick takes from the New York Observer, the first from a guy whose rallies inspire shouts of “kill the police” and the second from a guy who’s been known to shout that sort of thing himself. Barron, the more marginal and thus less cautious of the two, naturally agrees with Wright and tosses in an MLK comparison for good measure. Sharpton’s more equivocal but happily fulfills Limbaugh’s prediction yesterday that the spin from Obama shills will be to celebrate his “courage” in doing something that he was not only too gutless to do when he had the chance in Philadelphia but which he now absolutely, positively had to do to stay viable.

He’s curious as to why Giuliani and Romney were never asked about their issues with their respective churches. Here’s the video of Rudy being quizzed on it at last June’s CNN debate, but fair point vis-a-vis Mitt. Did he face any questions about his faith during the campaign? Why, offhand, I’m not even sure what his faith is.

Ace pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter, if in language a bit more colorful than I typically use.

Too little, too dishonest, and too late. Obama cuts into Wright for being precisely the man he has been for the past 20 years.

Wright has been consistent, and Obama has proven to be precisely what everyone feared—just another cheap empty suit, willing to say or do anything according to the requirements of the polls.

Far from being the Messiah, he makes for even a shoddy secondhand Brian.
