Cable news coverage: Biden vs Palin

Now that the dust has settled on both parties' vice presidential picks, it's time to take a look at how the media treated Joe Biden and Sarah Palin in the crucial early hours after they were announced as running mates.

Looking at the transcripts of CNN, FNC, and MSNBC during the two "primetime" hours of the day John McCain and Barack Obama announced their running mates, a trend becomes quite clear: The media were much more likely to report negative information about the Alaskan Palin than the Delawarean Biden.

Olbermann dislikes freedom of speech and of the press

In an unusually heated attack on a veteran political reporter by a cable news host, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann laced into the Associated Press's Charles Babington an hour after Barack Obama had concluded his speech in Denver on Thursday night.

Olbermann was outraged that the AP's Babington had written, in his analysis of the speech, just off the wire, that Obama had tried nothing new and that his speech was lacking in specifics.

It is analysis that strikes me as having borne no resemblance to the speech you and I just watched. None whatsoever. And for it to be distributed by the lone national news organization in terms of wire copy to newspapers around the country and web sites is a remarkable failure of that news organization.

HANK SHEINKOPF, DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST: Good for democrats, not so good for the nation in the long term. Barack Obama is interesting, he's new, therefore he is news. OK. The fact that a black man can reach that pinnacle of success, raise the amount of money, run this kind of organization, beat Hillary Clinton is big news. At some point there has to be some fairness in the discussion. The problem here from the beginning is from day Obama showed up, I was wondering when the reporters will start chiseling his face on to Mt. Rushmore and the guy hadn't even won the nomination yet. That's the danger here, Lou. And people know it and they're not stupid. Average guy says wait a second, I want news and he isn't getting it.

My colleagues in the national media are absolutely biased, in the tank supporting the Obama candidacy while claiming the mantle of objectivity.

Well, I think the way the national media in this country right is performing, is disgraceful.

"The Washington Post" has put Barack Obama on the front pages of the Washington Post three times as many times as Senator McCain.

"Time" magazine has run seven covers with Obama. McCain two.

I mean, this is not close, folks. And it is ugly. It is nasty. And I guarantee you, we are watching a shift in the way in which the media in this country, which is already reviled by the public, I believe it's going to be even worse.

When these news organizations are doing this and trying to pretend cloaking themselves in the mantle of objectivity, you know, they're silly, (trulish), absolutely in my opinion, despicable phonies.

Obama campaign caught selling 'free' tickets

Channel 4 News in Denver, CO is reporting that the Obama campaign has been lying about tickets to the Obama speech at Invesco Field in Denver, CO.

Reporters discovered a hidden link on the Obama website targeted to known high dollar donors. The Obama campaign solicited those donors for $1000.00 in exchange for tickets to the event.

This is directly contrary to what Obama's campaign claimed.

In a media shocker...

This past year Iraq has disappeared from the front pages of the nation's newspapers and from the nightly network newscasts.

Network news devoted to Iraq dropped from 23% to 3% (92% decline) compared to last year:

Cable news dedicated to Iraq dropped even further from 24% to 1% over last year:

During the 1992 presidential campaign, when incumbent Vice President Dan Quayle made a spelling mistake, the New York Times was all over it.

On Friday, Barack Obama

told an Oregon audience that "I've been in 57 states, (with) I think one left to go."

Searches at the Times

But a Times search on "Quayle potato" (not in quotes) from June 10 to November 10, 1992 shows that the Old Gray Lady's reporters, columnists, writers, and editorialists went back to the story another 38 times

Funny how the networks are quick to accede to the political desires of liberals, without worrying too much about "pandering" or subcontracting their own highly-trained sense of news-value to the lay public, so long as that lay public can be used as a pretext to do what what the liberals in the newsroom want to do anyway.

Imagine if FoxNews announced "We're going to have Wright updates every half hour, because that's what our viewers want."

I imagine they'd be castigated for deferring to their bitter, gun-clinging audiences' wishes.

Because CNN has a better audience, of course. It's liberal, and, as such, can be trusted to help make the big news-judgment decisions.

Because ultimately it's not a J-school credential that empowers one to decide what should and should not be in the national debate -- it's an adherence to the liberal political philosophy.

More unreported success in Iraq

Between mid-March and mid-April, al Qaeda suffered major losses in Iraq. American and Iraqi troops killed or captured 53 al Qaeda leaders. These include men in charge of entire cities (or portions of large cities like Mosul or Baghdad), as well as men in charge of various aspects of terror operations (making bombs, placing them or minding the bombers). Most important, nine of the ten most senior men involved, were captured, and interrogated. This led to locating more al Qaeda staff, and assets. Hundreds of weapons and explosives caches have been discovered this year, as a result of interrogating captured terrorists. The result has been a sharp fall in suicide bomber attacks, and the ones still carried out are against soft targets

All this is good news, meaning it's not reported.

Bad news brings in the eyeballs and advertising revenue. Stories of desertion and desperation in Basra grab the headlines, while al Qaeda's travails are relegated to the back pages, if at all.

(2008-04-19) — ABC News today issued an apology to the Democrat party and progressive pundits, on behalf of journalists George Stephanopolous and Charles Gibson, for allowing this week’s Democrat presidential debate to descend into ‘tangential character issues‘ like honesty, integrity and personal association with terrorists and racists.

To atone for this ‘gross disservice‘, ABC News said it would set aside up to three full minutes in prime time on the eve of Tuesday’s presidential primary in Pennsylvania to allow Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama “to fully debate their substantive policy differences.”

As a further demonstration of its commitment to serious coverage of the issues that divide the Democrat rivals, the network said it would air the policy debate with “limited commercial interruption.”

Rev. Jeremiah Wright is about to roost in a 10,340 square foor $1.6 million dollar home.

FOX News reported:

FOX News has uncovered documents that indicate Wright is about to move to a 10,340-square-foot, four-bedroom home in suburban Chicago, currently under construction in a gated community.

While it is not uncommon for an accomplished clergyman to live in luxury, Wright’s retirement residence is raising some questions.

“Some people think deals like this are hypocritical. Jeremiah Wright himself criticizes people from the pulpit for middle classism, for too much materialism,” said Andrew Walsh, Associate Director of the Leonard E. Greenberg Center for the Study of Religion in Public Life with Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.

“So he’s entitled to be tweaked here. So the question really is, how unusual is this? Somewhat unusual,” he said.

From January 2007 -- when Bush announced the "surge" -- through the end of May 2007, Iraq had been the dominant story, accounting for 20% of all the news coverage measured by PEJ's News Coverage Index. But from the time of that May funding vote through the war's fifth anniversary on March 19, 2008, coverage plunged by about 50%. In that period, the media paid more than twice as much attention to the presidential campaign as it did to the war.

In the first three months of 2008, coverage of the campaign outstripped coverage of the war by a margin of more than 10-to-1 (43% of the newshole compared with 4%).

The reduction in violence on the ground that began late last year has coincided with a significant decrease in coverage from the war zone as well.

In November, stories filed from Iraq began to take greater notice of the surge's success in reducing violence, even as the volume of coverage tapered off, evidence perhaps of the old adage that no news is good news.

After a CBS News video appeared on YouTube contradicting former First Lady Hillary Clinton’s account of her 1996 landing in Bosnia “under sniper fire”, a spokesman for Sen. Clinton’s presidential campaign said unnamed critics were trying to “swiftboat” her “in a fashion reminiscent of what they did to John Kerry in 2004.”

The Clinton campaign source said CBS News had apparently edited out the sniper fire audio from its video clips, making it look like First Lady Clinton and her daughter Chelsea were greeted at the landing site by a little, pony-tailed Bosnian girl who kissed Mrs. Clinton on the cheeks.

“Even without the audio, you can see Hillary and Chelsea ducking toward the little girl as bullets whistle over their heads,” said the anonymous campaign staffer. “The other people standing nearby were so paralyzed by fear that all they could do was smile. The little girl practically leaped into Hillary’s arms for protection from the barrage of searing hot lead.”

Republican Fred Thompson announced today he has pulled out of the race to set pre-primary expectations through media-driven political polling.

Thompson said he’s committed to winning the Republican nomination for president, and then the White House, but would no longer allow his name to stand in public opinion polls funded by newspapers and cable news outlets.

“The mainstream media shape public opinion about the candidates through their decidedly-liberal news coverage,” said Mr. Thompson, “and then they turn around and ask people what they think of those candidates. Well, if you feed slop to a pig, what do you think you’re going to shovel up later?”

“Do we really want The New York Times and the Washington Post to tell the Republican party whom we ought to pick to run against Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama?”

Mr. Thompson added, “If you polled the San Diego Chargers, before the AFC title game, do you think they’d choose Tom Brady to quarterback the Patriots?”
