Abraham Lincoln said it exactly right! But few Americans care to hear his words…

▪ You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.

▪ You cannot help men permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

In the end, the rich will remain rich, even if they have to move their assets to safe havens off-shore, which is already happening. But the rest will no longer be free.

History repeats itself only because people refuse to remember the lessons of their past.

Only one, who lives in bondage, is willing to give everything for freedom. And, so we will learn again...the hard way.

This principle was codified, I believe, in the “You’re Not Allowed to Disagree Act of 2002.” In defense of our hero, he’s just following his political instincts: He sees something that challenges his beliefs and, voila, down it goes. Think of it as the Fairness Doctrine for campus protests.

And before you ask, no, your right to free speech that he’s challenging doesn’t count. Exit question one: This sort of makes sense by Doug Kmiec standards, no? Exit question two: “If there’s a student on this campus that … might be having an abortion, might be going through this, you’re going to put this up in front of them? Are you crazy?”

The other side can label and name-call all they want, but I trust the American people to recognize that it is not surrender to end the war in Iraq so that we can rebuild our military and go after Al Qaida’s leaders.

I trust the American people to understand that it is not weakness, but wisdom to talk not just to our friends, but to our enemies, like Roosevelt did, and Kennedy did, and Truman did.

FDR and Truman. Both men ended up having to conduct massive wars that outlasted their presidencies, and in FDR’s case in no small measure because Western nations insisted on talk rather than action.

Truman met with Joseph Stalin during and after World War II, but that didn’t stop the Soviets from blockading West Berlin or ringing down an iron curtain across eastern Europe, enslaving those nations for almost 50 years

leaving a war without winning it is, in fact, surrender. How else would anyone describe it? “Quitting” and “running away” come to mind, but both are synonymous with surrender

Getting the perfect sunset shot

the Scripps Institute of Oceanography Pier at La Jolla has been one of my favorite subjects for daylight beach photography

while taking pictures of the pier during the day, I thought it’d be great if I could somehow frame the setting sun in the middle of the pier. It didn’t seem too difficult: wait under the pier until the sun sets, then take pictures. It’s a little more difficult than that; the sun is only in that spot twice a year.

After looking at the Scripps Pier on Google Maps, I found that the pier really points pretty far north of west

In Stellarium, I turned on “Azimuth lines” (which vertically divides the horizon), and fast-forwarded time, looking for a sunset that seemed to be at the right angle.

The NOAA Solar Position Calculator website allowed me to confirm my data.

So that night, I went to the beach about a half hour before sunset, waited for the sun to approach the horizon, and took my pictures as the sun set.

Baskin-Robbins co-founder dies at 90

Hold it together Geekologie Writer. Irv Robbins, a man my girlfriend swears deserves two Nobel Peace Prizes, has passed away at the age of 90. Robbins is best known for putting the Robbins in Baskin-Robbins and providing invaluable aid in my girlfriend's quest to gain 30 pounds. In all seriousness though, I used to eat the hell out of some Baskin-Robbins as a kid, and Irv helped create countless memories for millions of ice cream loving children and adults alike. *sniffle* Thanks Irv, I hope you're rambling along that great Rocky Road in the sky. *sob* Now I need some mint chocolate chip.

(2008-05-07) — Sen. Hillary Clinton aborted her White House bid today blaming what she called a “vast mathematical conspiracy” that secretly works to keep women out of positions of power.

The former First Lady said she would return to the U.S. Senate and introduce legislation to help female presidential candidates “breakthrough the math ceiling.”

Party insiders pressured her to pull out after Tuesday’s crushing defeat in the North Carolina primary and her surprisingly thin victory in Indiana.

“It’s beyond coincidence that Barack Obama has more votes, more delegates and more money than I do,” said a tearful Sen. Clinton at a news conference announcing her withdrawal from the race. “It would take a willing suspension of disbelief to think that I was forced out of this race because a majority of Democrats don’t want me to be president.”

“I’ve always heard that figures don’t lie,” she said, “but apparently they’ll do whatever it takes to crush the hopes and dreams of American women.”

NYT shuns the Constitution

At least they're open about it: the New York Times disdains Supreme Court justices who hew to the principles upon which this country was founded. The Times's admission came in the course of an editorial calling on Obama and Clinton to put aside their bickering and focus on beating John McCain. That is vital, in the Times's view, given McCain's pledge to nominate Supreme Court justices in the mold of John Roberts and Samuel Alito.

Writes the Times [emphasis added]:

Mr. McCain predictably criticized liberal judges, vowed strict adherence to the Founders’ views and promised to appoint more judges in the mold of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito. That is just what the country does not need.

So in the Gray Lady's mind, "strict adherence to the Founders’ views" is "just what the country does not need." Not that this comes as a surprise. Still, it's stunning to see in black and white that, as far as the Times is concerned, the Constitution really shouldn't stand for too much.

Democrat party cracking up?

Here's what jumps out at me from the first wave of exit polls that have been released to the Edison-Mitsofky consortium:

Forget the horse race numbers for a moment: if the surveys are accurate, the polarization within the Democratic Party has reached critical levels. Nearly six in ten Obama supporters in Indiana say they would be dissatisfied if Clinton were the nominee -- that's (I believe) the high percentage of Obama supporters who have ever said that.

In both IN and NC, two thirds of Clinton supporters say they'd be dissatisfied if Obama were the nominee -- I believe that's the highest number recorded for that question, too.

The percentage of Clinton voters who say they'd choose McCain over Obama in a general election is approaching 40% in Indiana. Put it another way: in North Carolina, less than HALF of folks who voted today for Hillary Clinton are ready to say today that they'd definitely vote for Obama in a general election.
