Amazon sues New York

Amazon has filed suit against the state of New York in response to the law passed last week that requires the company to collect sales tax on purchases made by New Yorkers. They say the law, which demands any web retailer with affiliates in the state to charge sales tax, is vague and unconstitutional. The company also says they've been unfairly targeted since lawmakers dubbed the bill the "Amazon Tax". I hope they're right and the law gets repealed; I'm not spending 8.375% more of my hard-earned money than I should until this is worked out. [NYT]

The Mended Spiderweb series came about during a six-week period in June and July in 1998 which I spent on Pörtö. In the forest and around the house where I was living, I searched for broken spiderwebs which I repaired using red sewing thread.

The morning after the first patch job, I discovered a pile of red threads lying on the ground below the web. At first I assumed the wind had blown them out; on closer inspection it became clear that the spider had repaired the web to perfect condition using its own methods, throwing the threads out in the process. My repairs were always rejected by the spider and discarded, usually during the course of the night, even in webs which looked abandoned.

Clinton leads big in Indiana

The results of a statewide survey indicate a dramatic shift of support from Sen. Barack Obama in favor of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Indiana Democratic presidential primary.

The survey, conducted by Indianapolis-based TeleResearch Corp. and released exclusively to 6News, showed Clinton with a 10-point lead over Obama -- 48 percent to 38 percent -- with 14 percent of respondents undecided. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percent.

What is particularly striking in the results is the declining support for Obama in favor of Clinton over successive days in which respondents were questioned.

On the first day of the survey, Clinton held a 2 percent lead -- 45 percent to 43 percent, despite a 20-point lead for Obama among male respondents. Each day, more respondents supported Clinton.

By the last day of polling, Clinton took 4 percent lead among men -- 45 percent to 41 percent -- representing a staggering 24-point swing.

Learning Light Painting

1. The tools

Besides your camera you will need a tripod and a torch

2. Light

I use a little light also used as a key chain. It s powerful enough to draw the characters and can be turned on/off just by pressing a button.

3. Camera settings

Shutter speed: As long as you need to create the scene.

ISO: I usually put it on 100 so I can set the shutter speed on a very slow value and I don t get any noise on my photographs.

Aperture: Set it doing a test shot without drawings, focusing on an element close to what you are going to draw.

Flash: Can be used to fix a person or a moving element in the scene.

White balance: Set it doing a test shot. Street lighting is usually yellow.

Focus: Obviously on manual if there is not enough light.

4. Tips

Light is your friend, you could use moving lights from cars etc.. for exemple, I did one while a train was passing under a bridge.

Wear dark clothes if you want to lower the chance of being visible on the photograph.

Iran Blocks Jewish Group From UN Racism Conference!

The Iranian Regime along with Algeria and Egypt blocked a Jewish NGO from attending the UN's conference on racism.

Iran is very proud of this.

Iran has scored a victory in keeping a Jewish NGO out of the first substantive session of the Durban II preparatory process. Iran objected to the accreditation or participation of the Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy and then issued a list of demands that the NGO was required to answer. The long list was an intrusive fishing expedition designed to gather data on Jewish NGOs across Canada, including membership lists, identification of any possible dual Canadian-Israeli citizens, and a list of all "financial sources and contributions."

The Canadian Jewish advocacy group withdrew its application to attend a U.N. conference on racism today.

Clinton takes lead in NC

A survey of 571 registered likely voters in North Carolina’s May 6 Democratic primary shows Sen. Hillary Clinton having moved from a double digit deficit in an InsiderAdvantage poll taken in mid-April to a two point lead over Sen. Barack Obama in this telephone survey, conducted April 29. The survey was weighted for age, race, gender, and political affiliation. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8%

The results were:

Hillary Clinton: 44%

Barack Obama: 42%

Undecided: 14%

The shift has come almost entirely from white voters age 45 and over

“I believe when all is said and done, Obama will likely carry North Carolina; or if he loses the race, it will be by just a few points.

“If this white vote shift does not erode, given that North Carolina’s white Democratic voters are primarily in the Research Triangle, where education and personal finances are in the top tier for the nation, then I would say this suggests a major shift in all future primaries towards Clinton,” said Towery

China trying to censor internet access at Olympics

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, a congressional leader on human rights issues, on Thursday will call on President Bush to boycott China's Olympics opening ceremonies and will reveal that China has been pressuring U.S. hotels in Beijing to prevent guests' access to the Internet.

Brownback, who is tying the plight of North Koreans into the Olympics story, will also advise athletes to listen to their consciences before deciding whether to participate in the opening ceremonies this August.

"He intends to discuss recent, albeit confidential, information we have received from two different sources, that the Chinese are demanding that U.S. hotels in Beijing put filters on their Internet pipes, presumably to either monitor and or limit information coming in and out of China during the Olympics,"

"This is very sensitive because we won't be able to provide any details as to where we got this information. But he will bring it up," the source said.
