In the pantheon of well-intentioned governmental policies gone awry, massive ethanol biofuel production may go down as one of the biggest blunders in history. An unholy alliance of environmentalists, agribusiness, biofuel corporations and politicians has been touting ethanol as the cure to all our environmental ills, when in fact it may be doing more harm than good. An array of unintended consequences is wreaking havoc on the economy, food production and, perhaps most ironically, the environment.

the last thing Americans need is higher prices at the grocery store, but that's exactly what they're getting.

One gallon of ethanol requires four gallons of water to produce

deforestation

destruction of wetlands and grasslands

species extinction

displacement of indigenous peoples

Tortilla shortages

rising flour prices

forests being cut down and burned

Gulf of Mexico, already polluted by agricultural runoff

will only get worse

Another dem caught in sex sting

TROY -- The co-founder and former CEO of the liberal-progressive Democracy Radio and husband of U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow was caught in February by a Troy police sting aimed at catching prostitutes, according to a police report.

Athans paid a 20-year-old prostitute $150 for sex in a Troy hotel but was not arrested

The police report said officers observed Athans enter a room under surveillance and leave 15 minutes later.

Officers entered the room and found sex toys, condoms, $431 in cash and a laptop computer. They arrested the woman, identified as Alycia Lorraine Martin, and charged her with prostitution.

Athans was executive vice president of Air America, which filed for bankruptcy in 2006. He was also on staff in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.

Wright says congress anti-black

(2008-04-02) — The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, retired pastor to Sen. Barack Obama, said today that politicians “are getting after Big Oil because it’s black,” noting that “you don’t hear nobody talking smack like that on Big Milk.”

The Rev. Wright said he came out of seclusion to make the remarks out of concern that substantive presidential campaign issues like energy policy might push discussion of America’s racial divisions out of the headlines.

“Milk now costs an average of $3.70 per gallon,” said the Rev. Wright, “while gasoline is still less than $3.30 at the pump, and yet oil gets blamed for all our problems, from global warming to the war in Iraq. People say it’s slimy, dirty, toxic…but you don’t hear them dissin’ milk like that.”

The former pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago asked rhetorically, “Why don’t we see posters of Brooke Shields or Mariska Hargitay sporting an oil mustache? I rest my case.”
