Now a New York City architecture firm called Phu Hoang Office has proposed a way to turn the sea into a thriving center for tourism and eco-research. The firm proposed the creation of artificial islands (pictured) called No Man's Land that would house hotels, create energy, and harvest clean water from the atmosphere. Check out more pictures and a schematic below.

Salinity gradient solar ponds, water purification tanks, and water filtering processes will all be integrated into the designated “water islands” of the chain. The other two island designs will be for tourists and solar energy production, providing self sufficient power as well as creating revenue.

Tags: geo-enginering, architecture, dead sea

<clipSource>http://io9.com/5016862/artificial-islands-of-the-dead-sea</clipSource>

Raindrops on roses

clipped by: Aribeth
clipper's remarks: The team tried to replicate the effect. They put some polyvinyl alcohol onto rose petals and allowed it to set, then peeled off a thin plastic cast of the petal surface. This film had the same properties as the rose petal:the film could hold droplets of between 3-5 microlitres even when held upside down.

It seems that the physical shape of the surface is much more important than any chemical properties of the material in creating 'stickiness',says Ronald Fearing, a biomimetic engineer at the University of California at Berkeley.

For a rose, this stickiness might come in handy as reflective water drops that glisten in the Sun might attract pollinating insects. In the lab, such materials might be useful for 'lab on a chip' devices that need to hold and shunt around tiny quantities of liquid without leaking or being contaminated by nearby materials. "These findings present many interesting applications in microfluid handling," says Fearing.

Clip Source: www.nature.com

Raindrops on roses

Behind the natural beauty of a rosebud covered in dew drops lies a decades-old mystery: why don't the tiny droplets fall off, even when the flower is turned upside down?

The beading of water droplets on natural materials is not a rare thing.

But on many flowers and leaves the droplets slide off with the slightest tremble

because the surfaces are very rough and spiky at the microscopic scale, and the tips of the spikes are covered in wax.

The water molecules therefore come into contact with only a tiny fraction of the surface, and then only to water-repelling wax.

Lin Feng and her colleagues at Tsinghua University in Beijing found that although rose petals are coated with similar projections, they have wide, gentle-sloping troughs between the spikes, and no wax. The spikes keep the dew drops in a spherical shape, but the water 'leaks' into the troughs between spike-covered bumps, giving a bit of 'stick' and stopping a small droplet from rolling around (see diagram).

Tags: science

<clipSource>http://www.nature.com/news/2008/080425/full/news.2008.778.html</clipSource>

12 Top Places You Risk Getting Infected

clipped by: murieleileen

Clip Source: articles.mercola.com

1. Lack of sleep can send your blood sugar levels skyrocketing, contribute to weight gain, lead to depression, put you at risk for diabetes, and cause brain damage.

Sleep deprivation can alter your levels of thyroid and stress hormones,

1. 3. Sprinkle just-washed sheets and pillowcases with lavender water and iron them before making up your bed. The scent is scientifically proven to promote relaxation, and the repetition and mindlessness of ironing will soothe you. Or, instead of ironing your sheets, do the next best thing: Put lavender water in a perfume atomizer and spray above your bed just before climbing in.

Excess sugar could increase levels of the brain chemical dopamine, she said, leading to a craving for sweets.

Clip Source: www.latimes.com

Researchers have learned that rats overwhelmingly prefer water sweetened with saccharin to cocaine, a finding that demonstrates the addictive potential of sweets

Offering larger doses of cocaine did not alter the rats' preference for saccharin, according to the report

Scientists said the study, presented this week in San Diego at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, might help explain the rise in human obesity, which has been driven in part by an overconsumption of sugary foods

In the experiment, 43 rats were placed in cages with two levers, one of which delivered an intravenous dose of cocaine and the other a sip of highly sweetened water. At the end of the 15-day trial, 40 of the rats consistently chose saccharin instead of cocaine

Further testing the rat sweet tooth, scientists subjected 24 cocaine-addicted rats to a similar trial. At the end of 10 days, the majority of them preferred saccharin

Clip Source: www.spoiledratten.com

er
is vibration. We know from quantum physics that everything,
including human beings and all matter in the Universe
is in a state of vibration. Each and every thing generates
its own frequency, which is unique.

HADO it has been neglected in the development

been invisible. We can feel Hado if we are
tuned into it, but we haven't been able to see it before

He is the author of many books concerning the phenomenon of ' Hado'. The two ideograms comprising this expression Hado (pronounced hadou to rhyme with shadow) literally mean "wave" and "move". This following definition is how Dr. Emoto himself describes the phenomenon, which led him to a series of remarkable discoveries pertaining to the nature of water.

Hado: The intrinsic vibrational pattern at the atomic level in all matter. While it's one of the most important and abundant chemical compounds on Earth, water is still a puzzle to scientists. Much research has been done to uncover the structure of water beyond the H2O scale, which is thought to be responsible for many of water’s unique properties. However, the nature of this structure, governed by hydrogen bonds, is currently unknown.

Water undoubtedly is the most important chemical substance in the world

The interaction of water with electric fields has been intensely explored over the last years.
