learned that he had developed severe asthma due to inhaled
second-hand smoke from his neighborhood. He then wrote reports and

smoking was banned on the streets of his hometown. Three-years
later, he earned a World Health Organization (WHO) World No Tobacco
Day Award for his relentless efforts.

I'm from Massachusetts and they have recently changed the laws so that smoking is no longer allowed in restaurants and bars. This was great for me, since I'm not a smoker, and didn't have to worry about the second hand smoke I would be inhaling. After one night of drinking in Durham I went home and all my clothes and my hair reeked of cigarettes.

Although New Hampshire abides by the motto "Live Free or Die" I believe it is a person's choice to expose themselves to cigarettes or not, and with New Hampshire's current law, people weren't given that right. One Thursday night while I was at the bar I was ecstatic to learn that within a couple of weeks the law would be changing and smoking would no longer be allowed in all restaurants and bars. People would no longer have to deal with the smell of smoke while trying to eat a decent meal or worry about immediately showering

after spending the night

Tags: secondhand smoke, smoking ban, ciggarettes, health, bars, new hampshire, restaurants, freedom

<clipSource>http://media.www.tnhonline.com/media/storage/paper674/news/2007/11/30/Commentary/Smoke.Free.Is.The.Way.To.Be-3124254.shtml</clipSource>

Cigarette Smoke and Alcohol Together == BAD COMBO

clipped by: murieleileen

Clip Source: in.news.yahoo.com

Cigarette smoke, alcohol combo 'causes greatest degree of heart disease'

Birmingham, Nov22 (ANI): While inhaling second-hand smoke is known to be bad for the heart, a new study has now revealed that the damage increases nearly 5-fold when you are drinking as well.

A research study conducted at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) revealed that exposure to cigarette smoke combined with alcohol consumption cause the greatest degree of cardiovascular disease.

The study led by Scott Ballinger, associate professor in the UAB Department of Pathology disclosed that exposure to cigarette smoke and alcohol increases artery lesions.

Artery lesions are a common problem in heavy smokers and a key sign of advancing cardiovascular disease.

"Our study shows that exposure to cigarette smoke when combined with alcohol consumption caused the greatest degree of cardiovascular disease development compared to either action or exposure alone," Ballinger added.

Tags: cigarettes, alcohol, secondhand smoke, heart, cardovascular disease

<clipSource>http://in.news.yahoo.com/071122/139/6nk35.html</clipSource>

Effects of Secondhand Smoke on Babies

clipped by: murieleileen

Clip Source: www.timesonline.com

No more delays

As the Legislature continues to drag its heels on banning indoor smoking in public places, the evidence continues to pile up about the impact of second-hand smoke.

Reuters Health reports researchers at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, measured the amount of cotinine, which may harm the heart and blood vessels by boosting both blood pressure and pulse, in the urine of 71 infants with smoking parents and 33 infants with non-smoking parents when the infants were just 10 to 12 weeks old.

On average, cotinine levels were 5.58 times higher in infants who had at least one smoking parent compared with infants whose parents did not smoke, the news service reported.

How much more evidence do state lawmakers need before they do something about second-hand smoke and indoor smoking in public places? USA Today reports that 38,000 non-smokers die each year from second hand smoke, along with another 300,000 children who are forced to suffer the effects of pneumonia, asthma, ear infections and bronchitis.

I myself do not smoke. I do however get the effects of inhaling about two cigarettes each day. I live in the McDonald residence hall and upon exiting the building I encounter, on average, about five of my fellow students smoking just outside the door. I often find myself making the remark if I were a smoker, I would end up saving a substantial amount of money on cigarettes, because I could just inhale everyone else's.

Tags: secondhand smoke, curtesy, health

<clipSource>http://media.www.bgnews.com/media/storage/paper883/news/2007/10/12/Forum/Dont-Smoke.Near.The.Doors-3028662.shtml</clipSource>

secondhand smoke, dementia linked

clipped by: murieleileen

Clip Source: www.miamiherald.com

Second-hand smoke, dementia linked

• Thinking of quitting smoking? Second hand smoke may be an even bigger contributor to the risk of Alzheimer's disease than previously realized. the compelling reasons to quit smoking, this one should make
pet lovers sit up and take notice: there's ample scientific
evidence to suggest that secondhand cigarette smoke can cause
                    cancer in companion animals.

And
your furry friends don't just inhale smoke; the smoke particles
are also trapped in their fur and ingested when they groom
themselves with their tongues. A study published in the American
Journal of Epidemiology found that dogs in smoking households
had a 60 percent greater risk of lung cancer; a different
study published in the same journal showed that long-nosed
dogs, such as collies or greyhounds, were twice as likely
to develop nasal cancer if they lived with smokers.

Tags: pets, dogs, cats, secondhand smoke, cancer

<clipSource>http://www.smokefreesociety.org/NewsClip/Pets-1.html</clipSource>

2nd hand smoke causes cancer in pets

clipped by: murieleileen
clipper's remarks: read what your cigarette smoke is doing to your pets if you care about them

Clip Source: www.livescience.com

Secondhand Smoke Causes Cancer in Pets

Secondhand smoke isn't just a health threat to people. It can also hurt dogs and cats, veterinarians say.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 126 million Americans who don't smoke are exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes, vehicles, workplaces, and public places. This exposure causes thousands of lung cancer and heart disease deaths among nonsmokers every year, according to the California Environmental Protection Agency.

• Thinking of quitting smoking? Second hand smoke may be an even bigger contributor to the risk of Alzheimer's disease than previously realized. It's known that smoking increases significantly the risk of cardiovascular disease, and cardiovascular disease, in turn, is a risk factor for Alzheimer's.

The study noted that elderly people who never smoked but had decades of exposure to secondhand smoke were 30 percent more likely to develop Alzheimer's, and that the risk was significantly higher than that if they had early stages of cardiovascular disease.

Tags: alzheimer;s, 2nd hand smoke, health

<clipSource>http://www.miamiherald.com/action_line/story/254113.html</clipSource>

Smoking Prohibited 50 Feet from San Francisco Muni Bus Stops

clipped by: trutheness
clipper's remarks: I spoke to Muni's Accessibiltiy office, and was told that Mayor Gavin Newsom signed this last year. The trouble is, no one knows about it, and there are no No Smoking signs at the bus stops.

Muni told me over the phone that they have asked Viacom to put No Smoking stickers on the bus shelters, but so far they have not. As a person suffering from a respiratory disease, I put it to you all collectively: How can we get the word out that smoking is no longer permitted at Muni bus stops? How can we protect the respiratory health of Muni passengers, especially the very young, the very old and the medically vulnerable like myself, at Muni stops, in a humane and respectful way? I favor education over enforcement, myself I am receptive to any ideas you all may have to accomplish clean, heathy air/smoke-free bus stops in San Francisco, and I am willing to help!
