Over the last two months, Nature has published a series of essays about the latest scientific research into music, and now that the series is complete, it has been made available as a free PDF.

Among the authors of the essays are Aniruddh D. Patel, a theoretical neurobiologist at the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla, who discusses the brain's response to different varieties of music, and Laurel Trainor, director of the McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind, who explains the neural basis of music perception.

Nature also has a special podcast featuring a discussion between science writer Philip Ball and music psychologist John Sloboda, both of whom contribute essays to the series.

The Harp Therapy Outreach Program, a national first, was founded in 1995 as an outgrowth of the American Youth Harp Ensemble. Today, it has matured into a nationally recognized program pairing youth mentors with disabled peers through partnerships with community agencies and schools region-wide.

clipper's remarks: The new tool promises to give musicians and producers powerful new ways to manipulate recordings both old and new.It might let studio engineers peer inside a chord-heavy rhythm-guitar part and nudge individual notes into tune. Or it could let them salvage unheard takes by classic musicians like Duke Ellington or Jimi Hendrix, left unreleased due to out-of-tune instruments or misplayed notes. It will certainly give musicians new ability to sculpt sound, such as prerecorded samples or loops, as if they were modeling clay.

New software can modify the individual notes of a recorded chord.

Peter Neubäcker, a former German guitar maker turned programmer, has done what many in the computer-music business believed impossible.

A new piece of software called Direct Note Access

will for the first time allow computers to analyze the digitized sounds of guitar or piano chords, or even multi-instrument recordings, and then extract and modify individual notes.

Computers have revolutionized the recording process, giving sound engineers wide latitude to manipulate notes recorded singly--to change their pitch, their tempo, or where they fall. But teasing apart notes recorded simultaneously, as in a six-string guitar chord, has never before been practical.

"In terms of sound processing, this is kind of the holy grail," says Michael Bierylo, a guitarist and professor of computer music at Boston's Berklee College of Music. "It's something everyone more or less thought we couldn't do."

Everyone hates falling down the stairs. It's even worse when you fall backwards down the stairs. And the one thing even worse than that is to fall backwards down the stairs on top of your million-dollar Guadagnini violin.

This, of course, is precisely what happened to David Garrett this week, a model and violinist who somewhere, some place, was dubbed "the Beckham of classical music" - a moniker that's followed him through every piece of press coverage since.

Alianna Boone is one of those musicians.

“The structure of the harp is considered to be the most healing instruments next to human voice,” said Boone, an Oregonian who plays for ill family pets and produced a CD "Harp Music to Soothe the Savage Beast."

While anecdotal reports abound, Boone conducted one of the few studies on harp music’s effect on animals. In 2000, she performed for recently hospitalized canines at a Florida veterinary clinic. The hour-long sessions immediately began to lower heart rate, anxiety, and respiration in many cases, she said.

Cow control

Dogs aren’t the only animals benefiting from the good vibrations.

Cassie, a black and white cow, lives at the Maple Farm Sanctuary in Mendon, Mass., with about 80 other unwanted livestock. She arrived there last year after jumping a 7-foot-high fence to escape from a slaughter house, said volunteer Tracie Russell.

a few years ago in japan, members of the hokkaido industrial research institute started carving thousands of very precise grooves into nearby roads. the slightly loopy brainwave belonged to a mr. shinoda, a guy who accidentally cut a road in several places with a digger and then later drove over the damage in his car.

he realised that with some planning and time to kill he could create rows of grooves which, when driven over at a certain speed, would ‘play a tune’.

the results, the ‘melody road’, can be seen above and the grooves are between 6 and 12mm apart: the narrower the interval, the higher the pitch. these stretches of road, each playing a different tune, can currently be found in 3 places in japan - hokkaido, wakayama and gunma - with the optimum musical speed being a depressingly slow 28mph.

don’t expect a virtual orchestra - from what i’ve heard, it’s not exactly beautiful music, but it’s unique and it’s mental. a winning combination.

Throughout the ages the healing power of harp music has been documented through art, religion, and literature. The harp is one of the most ancient of instruments and it is known for its’ gentle and soothing sound. In the Bible, the shepherd David was asked to play his harp for King Saul to soothe him of his rages and despair.

Currently, healing harp music is being performed in hospital nurseries, operating rooms, cancer clinics, and hospices with very positive results. When thoughtfully performed, harp music has a positive effect on the well being of patients by reducing their stress and anxiety levels. From a medical perspective, studies have proven that harp music is effective in reducing pain, respiratory rates, and blood pressure. It can also reach patients who are non-responsive and in comas.

Is the so-called "Mozart effect" a scientifically supported, developmental leg up or a media-fueled "scientific legend"?

The phrase "Mozart Effect" conjures an image of a pregnant woman who, sporting headphones over her belly, is convinced that playing classical music to her unborn child will improve the tyke's intelligence. But is there science to back up this idea, which has spawned a cottage industry of books, CDs and videos?

Earlier this year, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Germany published a second review study from a cross-disciplinary team of musically inclined scientists who declared the phenomenon nonexistent. "I would simply say that there is no compelling evidence that children who listen to classical music are going to have any improvement in cognitive abilities," adds Rauscher, now an associate professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh.

Earlier this year, The Washington Post asked Joshua Bell

to stand at a subway stop, play his instrument and see if anyone noticed.

This makes for a pretty good story, and a morality tale to boot. People in Washington are too busy, too self-absorbed, to recognize beauty at their doorstep or, in this case, at their subway stop.

But I wonder how many of us would have known the difference between Mr. Bell and your typical subway busker.

Do I really know enough about art music to recognize genius out of context, on the street? Do you?

So I am not sure what the Post proved with its gag

And yet the broader point of the Post exercise is worth acknowledging: We are not prepared to encounter beauty in our everyday lives.

But here is another way of approaching the question of how we look at the world and at life. Mr. Bell

is willing to bring art music to the people and to bridge the gap between the formal concert hall and the scruffy street.
