The Harp Therapy Outreach Program, a national first, was founded in 1995 as an outgrowth of the American Youth Harp Ensemble. Today, it has matured into a nationally recognized program pairing youth mentors with disabled peers through partnerships with community agencies and schools region-wide.

The Harp Therapy Outreach Program offers harp and music instruction to at-risk youth and students with mental and physical disabilities, including mental retardation, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Down’s Syndrome, and other emotional and neurological disorders.

This life-transforming experience not only provides these students healthy social interactions with their peers, from whom they are often isolated, but also results in clinically documented improvements in behavior and occupational motor skills. An innovative program that utilizes the harp and music instruction to develop musical, psychosocial ,and physical skills in disabled children and youth, enabling them to build life and social skills and

Alianna Boone is one of those musicians.

“The structure of the harp is considered to be the most healing instruments next to human voice,” said Boone, an Oregonian who plays for ill family pets and produced a CD "Harp Music to Soothe the Savage Beast."

While anecdotal reports abound, Boone conducted one of the few studies on harp music’s effect on animals. In 2000, she performed for recently hospitalized canines at a Florida veterinary clinic. The hour-long sessions immediately began to lower heart rate, anxiety, and respiration in many cases, she said.

Cow control

Dogs aren’t the only animals benefiting from the good vibrations.

Cassie, a black and white cow, lives at the Maple Farm Sanctuary in Mendon, Mass., with about 80 other unwanted livestock. She arrived there last year after jumping a 7-foot-high fence to escape from a slaughter house, said volunteer Tracie Russell.

Throughout the ages the healing power of harp music has been documented through art, religion, and literature. The harp is one of the most ancient of instruments and it is known for its’ gentle and soothing sound. In the Bible, the shepherd David was asked to play his harp for King Saul to soothe him of his rages and despair.

Currently, healing harp music is being performed in hospital nurseries, operating rooms, cancer clinics, and hospices with very positive results. When thoughtfully performed, harp music has a positive effect on the well being of patients by reducing their stress and anxiety levels. From a medical perspective, studies have proven that harp music is effective in reducing pain, respiratory rates, and blood pressure. It can also reach patients who are non-responsive and in comas.

Harp Therapy

During the past few years I have been drawn to the Harp as a healing tool. I learnt about this therapy by accident, as I watched a TV documentary concerning the work of Dr. Price and his experiences with delinquent children. Long term social effects were seen when these children were taught to play the harp. The majority of these children continued to play, and as adults were contributing well in society. By volunteering to play at a nursing home I gained first hand experience to the effects of the harp.

Records show that from ancient times that the harp was used as a healing tool. The one we are most familiar with is the story of David in the court of King Saul recorded in the Bible, where David is brought in to play for King Saul and soothe his troubled nerves. It was widely used in the court of Queen Elizabeth I for the same purpose. So it is not new, yet it's an uphill battle to be allowed into institutions to use this incredible tool.

Harp therapy for cancer patients

Harpist Bethan Hughes has been employed by Velindre Cancer Centre to play music to people being treated there.

"It can't just be used by any harpist, you have to be specifically trained.

"As an international performer, we are so used to being trained classically but with harp therapy we're trained in so many aspects - vibration frequency, resonance tones, and the medical and physical side of the strings and vibration levels of the harp.

Taking harp lessons is at the active end, while experiencing live harp music is on the passive end of that continuum.
