The relationship between an artist and the material they create with is a complicated and intimate one. At times, the artist chooses the material. But often, the material speaks to the artist and begs to be made into something wonderful. UK artist Heather Jansch has worked in several media, including paints, bronze, and wire sculpture. Almost by accident, she began creating beautifully unique sculptures from the irregular pieces of driftwood she finds on the beach.

Heather Jansch’s driftwood sculptures feature a variety of animals, but the most abundant and notable subjects are horses. The artist has had a life-long love of horses, and it shows in the incredible detail she puts into her life-size horse sculptures. The magnificent figures are so lifelike and full of energy that they seem likely to spring into movement at any moment. Her work isn’t limited solely to horses and driftwood, however. She also sculpts other animals from driftwood and casts some of her sculptures in bronze.

(HealthCastle.com) Researchers from the University of North Carolina recently observed MSG (monosodium glutamate) use in otherwise healthy individuals to investigate a potential connection between those who use the additive and weight gain. They studied 752 Chinese men and women (aged 40-59) randomly chosen from three rural villages in the north and south of China, and found that the number of overweight individuals was significantly higher for MSG users than nonusers. The results of this study were published in the scientific journal Obesity in August 2008.

This is the first human study to look at the link between MSG and weight. Previous studies on MSG and obesity have only been conducted on mice. In those studies, weight gain was significantly greater in MSG-treated mice compared with the control group, even when they were given similar portions of food. A possible explanation for this is that MSG alters the regulatory mechanisms that affect fat metabolism.

In June, Esmin Green, a 49-year-old mother of six, tumbled off her chair and onto the floor of the Kings County psychiatric ER waiting room in New York City. She'd been waiting for a psychiatric-unit bed to open up for more than 24 hours. Members of the hospital staff saw her lying there but did nothing for about an hour.

When Green was finally brought into the ER, she was dead. An autopsy revealed that she died from a pulmonary embolism, a blot clot in the legs which traveled to her lungs.

Why was Green sitting and waiting for so long while blood pooled in her legs? Despite increasing evidence that crowded ER’s can be hazardous to your health, hospitals have incentives to keep their ER patients waiting. As a result, there has been an explosion in ER wait times over the past few years, even for those who are the sickest.

Polygamy is the key to a long life

If female survival is the main explanation for male longevity, then monogamous and polygamous men would live for about the same length of time. Instead, it seems that fathering more kids with more wives leads to increased male longevity. Men, then, live long because they're fertile well into their grey years.

The explanation could be both social and genetic. Men who continue fathering kids into their 60s and 70s could take better care for their bodies because they have mouths to feed. But evolutionary forces acting over thousands of years could also select for longer-lived men in polygamous cultures.

Want to live a little longer? Get a second wife. New research suggests that men from polygamous cultures outlive those from monogamous ones.

After accounting for socioeconomic differences, men aged over 60 from 140 countries that practice polygamy to varying degrees lived on average 12% longer than men from 49 mostly monogamous nations, says Virpi Lummaa, an ecologist at the University of Sheffield, UK.

Rather than a call to polygamy, the research might solve a long-standing puzzle in human biology: Why do men live so long?

This question only makes sense after asking the same for women, who - unlike nearly all other animals - live long past the menopause.

One answer seems to be a phenomenon called the grandmother effect. For every 10 years a woman survives past the menopause, she gains two additional grandchildren, Lummaa says. It seems that doting on and spoiling grandchildren aids their survival, as well as furthering some of their grandmother’s genes.

Remember the mayonnaise jar and two cups of coffee when things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 Hours in a day are not enough.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the liquid into the jar, effectively filling the empty

Regular ThinkingShift readers would be well aware of my concern about eroding civil liberties and intrusions into one of our basic freedoms - the right to privacy. Happily, I’m coming across a few people who are agreeing with me of late instead of the usual bunch who bleet “if you have nothing to hide, who cares”.

I found this YouTube video at first hilarious. It’s from the American Civil Liberties Union. A glimpse into the future when ordering a pizza. Watch it. Then think about it. How easy would it be for the scenario to happen? We leave trails of our indentiy and self all over the place: profiles on Facebook; personal information and credit card numbers on PayPal; Google can track what we search for; medical databases are stuffed full of our medical histories and so on. Once you think about all this, like me, you might not think the video is all that hilarious. You could very well be looking at your future.

Dwight Nelson recently told a true story about the pastor of his church. The pastor had a kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc.

The kitty would not come down. The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten.

That's what he did, all the while checking his progress in the car. He then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But as he moved the car a little further forward .. the rope broke.

The tree went "BOING!" and the kitten instantly sailed through the air ... out of sight.

The pastor felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they'd seen a little kitten. No. Nobody had seen a stray kitten. So he prayed, "Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping," and went

An Enduring Legacy - Randy Pausch Inspired Millions

Randy Pausch, the professor at Carnegie Mellon University who inspired countless students in the classroom and others worldwide through his highly acclaimed last lecture, has died of complications from pancreatic cancer. He was 47.

Also a Carnegie Mellon alumnus, Pausch co-founded the Entertainment Technology Center and led researchers who created Alice, a revolutionary way to teach computer programming. He was widely respected in academic circles for a unique interdisciplinary approach, bringing together artists, dramatists and designers to break new ground by working in collaboration with computer scientists.

Outside the classroom, he gained public fame for delivering what would come to be known as "The Last Lecture." On Sept. 18, 2007, only a month after doctors told him that he had three-to-six months to live following a recurrence of pancreatic cancer, he presented a lecture called "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" to a packed auditorium at Carnegie Mellon.
