The peacock pansy butterfly (Junionia almana) has striking eyespots and purple patterns.

The Kamehameha butterfly (Vanessa tameamea) is one of just two indigenous butterfly species in Hawaii.

The birdwing (Ornithoptera priamus) is Australia’s largest butterfly. The female birdwing can reach a wingspan of nearly 8 inches (20 centimeters)!

The pipevine swallowtail butterfly (Battus philenor) sports white-and-orange dots on the underside of its hind wing.

The Brazilian eighty-eight butterfly (Diaethria neglecta) displays the design of lines and dots that gave it its unusual name.

This is the wing of an unidentified butterfly found near Tully, Australia – its colors and pattern evoking the image of rich tapestry.

1. Sodium Nitrate (also called Sodium Nitrite)

This is a preservative, coloring, and flavoring commonly added to bacon, ham, hot dogs, luncheon meats, smoked fish, and corned beef. Studies have linked eating it to various types of cancer.

2. BHA and BHT

Butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydrozyttoluene are used to preserve common household foods. They are found in cereals, chewing gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. They are oxidants, which form potentially cancer-causing reactive compounds in your body.

3. Propyl Gallate

Another preservative, often used in conjunction with BHA and BHT. It is sometimes found in meat products, chicken soup base, and chewing gum. Animals studies have suggested that it could be linked to cancer.

4. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

MSG is an amino acid used as a flavor enhancer in soups, salad dressings, chips, frozen entrees, and restaurant food. It can cause headaches and nausea, and animal studies link it to damaged nerve cells in the brains of infant mice.

BERLIN (June 23) - An American hiker stranded in the Bavarian Alps for nearly three days was rescued after using her sports bra as a signal, police in southern Germany said Monday.

Berchtesgaden police officer Lorenz Rasp said that he helped lift 24-year-old Jessica Bruinsma of Colorado state to safety by helicopter on Thursday after she attracted the attention of lumberjacks by attaching her sports bra to a cable used to move timber down the mountain.

"She's a very smart girl, and she acted very resourcefully," said Rasp. "She kept her shirt and jacket for warmth, but thought the sports bra could work as a signal."

An Alpine rescue team, including five helicopters and 80 emergency workers, had been searching for Bruinsma since she went missing June 16 after losing her way in bad weather while hiking with a friend near the Austrian border.

She fell 16.4 feet to a rocky overhang, where she spent the next 70 hours on the narrow ledge, sustained by water that she found by breaking into a

Many of us are guilty of looking at others our own age and thinking, "Surely, I can't be that old". If you've ever done this, then you'll appreciate the following.

My name is Alice Smith and I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist.

I noticed his DDS diploma, which bore his full name. Suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 40-odd years ago. Could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on way back then?

Solar Dish Could Revolutionize Energy Production

A new type of solar energy collector concentrates the sun into a beam that could melt steel. Researchers say the device could revolutionize global energy production.

The prototype is a 12-foot-wide mirrored dish was made from a lightweight frame of thin, inexpensive aluminum tubing and strips of mirror. It concentrates sunlight by a factor of 1,000 to produce steam.

"This is actually the most efficient solar collector in existence," said Doug Wood, an inventor based in Washington state who patented key parts of the dish's design — the rights to which he has signed over to a team of students at MIT.

To test the prototype this week, MIT mechanical engineering Spencer Ahrens put a plank of wood in the beam an generated an almost instant puff of smoke.

At the end of a 12-foot aluminum tube rising from the center of the dish is a black-painted coil of tubing that has water running through it. When the dish is pointing directly at the sun, the water in the coil flashes immediately into steam.

We have it on experience (our own and thousands of others) that the following food and situations have no calories to speak of (although the knowledgeable might describe them as unspeakable calories.)

OTHER PEOPLE'S FOOD: A chocolate mousse that you did not order has no calories. Therefore, have your companion order dessert and you taste half of it.

INGREDIENTS IN COOKING: Chocolate chips are fattening, about 50 calories a tablespoon. So are chocolate chip cookies! However, chocolate chips eaten while making chocolate chip cookies have no calories whatsoever. Therefore make chocolate chip cookies often but don't eat them.

FOOD ON FOOT: All food eaten while standing has no calories. Exactly why is not clear, but

CHILDREN'S FOOD: Anything produced, purchased or intended for minors is calorie-free when eaten by adults.

UNEVEN EDGES: Pies and cakes should be cut neatly, in even wedges or slices. If not, the responsibility falls on the person putting them away to "straighten up the edges"

Here is my completely unscientific explanation for why that might be the case: People who can’t sit still would be appreciated in a society that is always on the move, whereas in a sedentary population—like most of us live in today—we’re all but an unwanted annoyance. But whatever the real reason, scientists say these findings offer clues to why some of us evolved the way we did, and what that means for the future.

They found that those with the 7R allele in the nomadic population were better nourished than their non-nomadic brethren who carried 7R allele.

Some things just don’t mix; oil and water, cola and pop rocks. This is even true in the animal world. You’re not likely to see a dog, cat and rat getting along. That is, unless you live in Santa Barbara, California.

Walk down the streets of Santa Barbara and you’ll see something interesting. You’ll see a man with a dog. On top of the dog rides a cat. On top of the cat rides a rat. It’s a tower of animals that should be eating each other. But they’re getting along.

Gregory Pike trained the animals himself. His Rottweiler, Booger, had a litter of puppies. Pike introduced a kitten, Kitty, to the litter. Booger accepted the kitten as its own child. Pike raised the cat around small animals, like rats. Kitty accepts the rat, Mousey, as a sibling. Pike says, if they can get along, why can’t people?
