Custom Creations

The beauty of having a custom monogram is the endless options for the design. Instead of hanging artwork over the crib, I opted to paint an elaborate version of his initials.

First, I took the original design and had it blown up in black and white. Using painter's tape, I attached transfer paper (from the crafts store) and the design to the wall. Finally, I traced the design onto the wall, and filled it in with acrylic paint.

A cookie sheet or jelly roll pan, minus the dough, doubles as a magnetic message holder. Measure your pan and cut scrapbook paper or wallpaper to fit. Use a corner rounder to round each corner of the paper. Secure the paper to the pan using double-stick tape. Back flat florist's stones with colorful images, and glue on magnets to hold your messages in place.

Get the look of broken tile without the mess and fuss of traditional mosaic. Cut irregular squares and rectangles from patterned paper, fit the pieces together on the base, and adhere them with decoupage medium.

Nate Padavick created this focal-point wall in his newly renovated kitchen. Instead of painting it a new color or applying wallpaper, he used chalkboard paint from floor to ceiling.

After allowing the paint to dry, Nate used chalk (and excellent penmanship) to cover the wall with text from one of his favorite novels.

To mimic the look, apply at least three coats of chalkboard paint, letting them dry between coats. Depending on your artistic talents, you can change the look of the room in an instant. Freehand drawings, a stamped pattern, or this week’s shopping list are all ways to transform the project to suit your mood. A motif can easily be applied with a stencil and colored chalk.

Tip: Condition chalkboard paint before you write on it by letting the paint cure for one week. When the week is over, run a piece of chalk over the entire area. Wipe the chalkboard clean with a damp cloth. If you want a dustier look, use a dry cloth.

Pick the perfect position for the word on your sewn table runner. With the runner and stencil taped in place, use a round stencil brush to paint on the word, dabbing paint evenly for a solid print.

Stencil acetate

Twin bedsheet

Handwrite a word on a piece of paper with a thick marker. (Use the marker to further thicken parts of the letters, if needed.) Tape the word under a piece of clear acetate and use a crafts knife to cut out the letters.

What We Did: A basic flat sheet transforms this dining space from drab to delectable. We fashioned the curtains from four sheet parts, stitching the tie-dyed tops to lightly colored bottoms and embellishing the seams with ribbon. An extra strip of sheet (dyed soft cream) makes a snappy table runner, personalized with painted handwriting.

When the eggplant is dry, tape the stem stencil in place and stencil it green in the same fashion. To repeat the pattern across the fabric, paint all the eggplants first, then clean your brush to paint the green stems.

Step 1

Trace or draw an eggplant body (or other veggie shape) onto a sheet of stencil acetate. Cut out the middle of the shape to make the stencil. Make a separate stencil for the eggplant stem and a smaller version for the pattern on the cabinet skirt.
