Stressed mothers may raise fat children: study

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Millions of poor children in the United States may be getting fat before age 10 because their mothers are stressed out and the youngsters seek escape in unhealthy comfort food, researchers said on Tuesday.

The stress is rooted in poverty and can be brought on by money woes, work loads, insufficient health insurance and other factors, said Craig Gundersen of the University of Illinois, who led the study.

"People will eat in response to feeling stress," he said in a telephone interview, and in this case children may be eating more in response to stress-related trouble

The findings show there is a need for a firm social safety net for poor families with protections such as food stamps; better financial education to help people better manage money; and adequate health insurance coverage, he said.

New reports suggest that numerous families silently face the ire of violent teenagers even as many adolescents become overtly aggressive. Such children often physically abuse their parents, which includes frequent bashing and bullying. This shocking revelation was made through studies conducted in New South Wales and Victoria.

The studies suggest that adolescent sons usually direct physical and psychological attacks on their mothers.

According to a new Victorian report, domestic violence involving a person aged under 19 increased by 23 per cent between 2002 and 2006.

The report further states that one in 10 of the state's police family violence call-outs involves an adolescent perpetrator, and about 3500 cases happen each year.

A Indian couple who were infected with the virus that can lead to Aids have committed suicide after killing their three children, police in Mumbai say.

Relatives say the couple had been depressed by news that their daughter also had the HIV virus.

Police say the parents hanged themselves after poisoning their children, aged between five and 10.

India has one of the largest numbers of HIV-positive people in the world and they suffer serious social stigma.

Police say Babu Ishwar Thevar, 39, and his wife Amori, 33, killed themselves and their children on 5 August.

The couple had two sons - Venkatesan, 10, and Mani, eight - as well as a daughter, Mahalakshmi, who was five.

The girl survived being poisoned but police believe she was smothered by a pillow until she stopped breathing.

The couple did not leave a suicide note.

Police say they probably ended their children's lives thinking medication could not prevent the virus from affecting their daughter.

The fourth instalment of the World News America series on Alzheimer's goes to South Korea, a country with the most rapidly ageing population in the world, as the BBC's John Sudworth reports.

Lee Byung Ray and Cho Sook Ja have been married for 50 years.

Alzheimer's disease has deprived Mrs Cho of her speech, her memory and her power to recognise faces.

In their apartment in Seoul, Mr Lee said he had only one wish: to outlive his wife.

"In Korea it used to be the tradition for children to look after their parents," he said.

"But society has changed and I want my children to be free of this burden, so I need to live as long as possible."

According to South Korean government figures, in the year 2000, 7% of the population were over the age of 65.

By 2019 it will have doubled.

"But the Korean family structure is becoming more nuclear, women are pursuing their own careers and people are no longer able to look after their elderly relatives."

All through her life she thought that love was everything and was never ever bothered about the money! She gave her entire life, time and energy to her family, undemanding in her love and affection for her husband and her children. And then one fine morning, as they show in the movies, her husband had told her that he found another woman more attractive and more youthful than her and had coolly walked out on her! Her children had grown up and flew away from her protective nest! She was left with a place to live in and the savings to live for about four months from then on!

People donating eggs or sperm to infertile couples no longer have the right to anonymity. Despite fears of excessive claims on donors, many children could benefit.

Eighteen-year-old Zannah Merricks from north London is among the 2,000 children conceived each year using donor sperm or eggs.

"I'm not looking for a father," she says. "I already have one."

"I want to meet the donor because I want to know the other half of where I'm from," she says.

"I want to know my genetic history," she says. "And it would be interesting to know what traits I have that we might share, what we might have in common.

"I'm very arty. What if he is arty too? And I'm blonde and blue-eyed.

"This sort of information is what other people just take for granted."

"It's much more likely that I'll be able to find siblings."

Call for sex lessons at age four

Children as young as four should be given compulsory sex education, two leading sexual health charities say.

The Family Planning Association and Brook told BBC Newsbeat more should be done to cut abortion rates and sexually transmitted infections among teenagers.

They argue gradual education from such a young age would help children not to rush into sex when they were older.

The Department for Children, Schools and Family said it was reviewing the

delivery of sex education in schools.

Children aged four might be taught about the names of body parts and basic ideas about different relationships.

The government is not giving young people enough information about sex and relationships, the charities add.

He added: "All the evidence shows that if you start sex and relationships education early - before children start puberty, before they feel sexual attraction - they start having sex later.

"They are much more likely to use contraception and practise safe sex."

When the children had started leaving their home one by one, searching for their own life and identity, she never was unduly disturbed nor had cried bitterly for that matter. She had respected the growth and the maturity of the life of her own siblings! She also knew in her heart that her husband was there for her all the time! She had let go of her children and had realized that it was the time for the empty nest and of the rebuilding of their lives without their children…it was like a journey back to their pre-children days! Only this time, there was no honeymoon and no burning passion, but the harmony of their lives of being there for each other through the many ups and downs of life and the comfortable sharing of their lined skins, dimming eye-sights, and of the balding heads!

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Johnson & Johnson, Wyeth and other makers of infants' nonprescription cough and cold products are recalling certain medicines in the United States because of the danger of overdose, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association said on Thursday.

Novartis and Prestige Brands Holdings are recalling their oral infant cough and cold medicines, as well, because data show that when the medicines are misused, it can lead to overdose, especially in children under 2 years old.

At least three chain stores said they are pulling over-the counter infant cold and cough medicines from their shelves: CVS Pharmacy, the retail unit of CVS Caremark Corp, Stop & Shop Supermarket Co LLC and Giant Food LLC.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration reviewers have said that from 1969 through 2006 the agency received 54 reports of deaths with decongestants and 69 with antihistamines. Most were in children younger than 2. Overdose and drug toxicity were commonly reported in those cases, they said.
