A few years ago at the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win.

All, that is, except one boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. They all turned around and went back. Every one of them.

One girl with Down's Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it better."

All nine linked arms and walked across the finish line together.

Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there are still telling the story. Why? Because deep down we know this one thing:

What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves.

Parents accussed of encouraging fight...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A mother and father are facing charges they encouraged their 13-year-old daughter to fight another girl. Debra Sue Grubb, 33, is charged in Kanawha County Magistrate Court with misdemeanor battery after allegedly forcing her daughter Gabrielle to fight 14-year-old Megan Willis near the Grubbs' home on Aug. 15, Trooper J.M. Comer said Wednesday.

At one point, Grubb allegedly grabbed her daughter by the arm and used her daughter's body as a weapon to knock Megan to the ground.

Megan suffered cuts to her mouth and foot. Gabrielle was not injured.

"It turned into a mess," Comer said. "The two parents allowed this to happen when it should have been handled by the parents."

KABUL (Reuters) - At least seven children were killed in a U.S.-led coalition air strike on a religious school in Afghanistan, the coalition said on Monday, amid rising anger over civilian deaths from foreign military operations.

A U.S. military spokesman said some children who survived Sunday's raid said pupils had been forced by insurgents to stay inside the madrasa.

"We are truly sorry for the innocent lives lost in this attack," said Army Major Chris Belcher, a coalition spokesman, in a statement.

"We had surveillance on the compound all day and saw no indications there were children inside the building."

The air strike on the school occurred on the same day a suspected suicide bomber killed more than 20 people in an attack on a police bus in the heart of Kabul.

Other violence around the country made it one of the bloodiest days since the Taliban were driven from power in 2001.

Mother arrested after kids panhandled

NEW YORK - Police say an unemployed suburban mother of five found a quick way to make ends meet: turning her children into panhandlers.

Antoinette Jones, 37, pleaded not guilty to endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, at an arraignment Tuesday in Yonkers, a New York City suburb. A judge issued an order that bars her from her five children, and released her without bail.

It was not immediately known where the children were placed. Police said the case was referred to Child Protective Services, but agency officials declined to comment.

Police said they discovered the panhandling when Jones' 11-year-old son was reported missing at a Pathmark supermarket Monday night.

The 18-year-old told police her mother frequently forced the children to beg at stores, saying they often picked up $30 to $40 at a time.

Toddlers who spend three or more days a week in nursery are more likely to become anti-social, worried and upset, government research has found.

The evaluation of a £370m scheme to expand children's centres found youngsters were more likely to behave poorly the longer they spent in care.

But the report also found 30 hours in care increased children's confidence.

The research comes as teachers warn children are being "institutionalised" by the push to get mothers into work.

The study - A National Evaluation of Neighbourhood Nurseries - assessed the neighbourhood nurseries initiative, which was set up in 2001 to provide more childcare in some of the poorest parts of the country.

When compared with children who attended either one or two days per week, children who attended for three days per week or more were significantly more anti-social."

The number of months in day-care also affected behaviour.

Children killed in Iraq bombing

Nine children were among 12 people killed when a suicide bomber blew up a truck in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, police say.

A further 192 people were injured in the blast, which happened when a bomber drove a truck laden with explosives into a barrier at a police station.

Many of the victims were children from a nearby primary school, police said.

Hospitals were said to be overrun with the injured, many of them school children.

"We were at the last lesson and we heard the explosion," schoolgirl Naz Omar told the French news agency AFP.

"I saw two of my class mates sitting near the window. They fell on the floor, drenched in blood."

In Baghdad, the bodies of 19 Shia workers from the city's Shorja market were found.

The workers were kidnapped on Sunday at a fake checkpoint, officials said. Gunmen stormed their minibus as they returned home to the restive northern province of Diyala.
