I always enjoy hearing about the reading habits of people who are much smarter and more interesting than me. New Scientist has a feature package where seventeen big name scientists recommend books that they considered "life-changing." Google’s Book Search Offers 100 Million Texts

Courtney Mitchel, of the University of Michigan library’s book-shelving department is among hundreds of librarians who spend hours of each day going through almost 600 pages of some of the world’s oldest books.

Their work is part of Google’s Book Search, a project that plans to offer its users access to digital versions of 50 million to 100 million ancient texts.

Among the books being scanned by librarians is one which they believe to be the oldest Bible in the world printed in Arabic.

Book Search allows users to search books through a variety of topics

. They are allowed to download the entire text as long as the book is not held under copyright. If it is, or if they just want to read an original, they can use Book Search to find copies to buy or borrow.

More than 1 million rare or fragile books have been digitized through the Google-Michigan partnership since it began in 2004, with an estimated 6 million to go.

Florentine scholar Antonio Magliabechi (1633-1714) has been described as a literary glutton. His house was choked with 40,000 books and 10,000 manuscripts, and he spent hours each day in the Medici library.

The negligent Magliabechi reportedly once forgot to draw his salary for a full year, but his head was "an universal index, both of titles and matter." When the Duke of Florence asked him for a particular volume he replied, "Signore, there is but one copy of that book in the world; it is in the Grand Signore's library at Constantinople, and is the eleventh book in the second shelf on the right hand as you go in."

That memory made him a human search engine for writers of the time

Surrounded by books, he lived to be 81, and in his will he left his library to the public.

Books that will induce a mindfuck

Here is the list of books that will officially induce mindfucks, sorted alphabetically by author. Those authors in bold have been recommended by one or more people as being generally mindfucking - any books listed under their names are particularly odd. And finally, although he's way down at the bottom, my personal recommendation is definitely Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States, as it turns the ultimate mindfuck: inverting the world-view of our entire culture, and it is non-fiction.

The summer is the season of the pulsation of lights and of shining! The sharp rays of the Sun dazzle every little object it touches on! The raising mercury does not deter a serious reader from the absorption of his book! The summer months are for festivity and for bliss! The following story, entitled Walter and Winnie, was published sometime in the 19th century by an unknown author. It’s roughly 450 words long, and after you read it once, try reading it again three times fast.

“Warm weather, Walter! Welcome warm weather! We were wishing winter would wane, weren’t we?” “We were well wearied with waiting,” whispered Waiter wearily. Wan, white, woe-begone was Walter; wayward, wilful, worn with weakness, wasted, waxing weaker whenever winter’s wild, withering winds were wailing. Wholly without waywardness was Winifred, Walter’s wise, womanly watcher, who, with winsome, wooing way, was well-beloved.
