Oklahoma has just passed a law requiring not only that women seeking abortions be forced to view sonograms of their fetuses but that the picture be taken in the way most likely to reveal the clearest picture--often up their vaginas.

The government should be grateful, in a morbid way, that the dead birds sank to the bottom rather than bobbed to the surface. Otherwise, Syncrude workers would have to scoop up the carcasses of 500 birds — and that wouldn’t make for the best of photo ops if you’re trying to convince the world your oil is not ethically and environmentally dirty.

Oh, there are surely victims here — roughly 500 of them lying silently at the bottom of a toxic lake.

Hollywood pays tremendous attention to suffering children in Africa, but which ones have stood up for the American child victims of sex abuse at the hands of polygamist Mormons? It is a sad fact that American children who are victims of child sex abuse in all categories (clergy abuse, incest, teacher abuse, etc.) receive far less attention and support than foreign children. Do you know why children's issues are so difficult to get through state and federal legislatures? Children's advocates will tell you: "Children don't vote." It's also because too many wealthy adults don't give to suffering American children.

USAID does have a history of basing reproductive care funding decisions at least partly on ideology and politics. For example, they have withheld funding from developing countries if potential grantees provide abortion services or give abortion referrals to women.

The thing to keep in mind is that it takes 1,000 tons of water to produce one ton of grain.... Seventy percent of all the water we use in the world - that we pump from underground or divert from rivers - is used in irrigation. Not everyone has connected the dots to see that a future of water shortages will be a future of food shortages.
