The 2008/2009 season will be topped off by a performance, involving Prague State Opera soloists, orchestra and chorus, of Mozart’s celebrated Requiem. The company’s own forces will be augmented by guests from Japan: the Haruka Women’s Chorus, which will add to the programme its own contribution, a miscellany of Japanese songs on the theme of the four seasons, entitled Furusato no Shiki, arranged by Shunichiro Genda. The songs, dating from the period between 1897 and 1947, extoll the beauties of the Japanese countryside and culture, and universal love. They are widely popular in Japan. The baton will be in the hand of Yu Miyadera, principal conductor of the Saitama Chuo Philharmonic Orchestra, and chief conductor of the Haruka Women’s Chorus. He previously led performances of Mozart’s Requiem, and Symphony No. 25 in G minor, conducting the PSO orchestra at Tokyo’s Saitama-shi Bunka Centre, on Nov 14, 2007, at the end of the PSO’s Japanese tour.

Old Town Square

The heart of Prague's historical center is the Old Town Square. It has been beautifully restored and it is a good place to start your Prague visit. You will find the Gothic spires of the Týn Church towering over the square and the statue of reformer Jan Hus, and the Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall on the opposite side of it (by the way, we don't think that the hourly display of the 12 apostles is worth a wait longer than five minutes). You will not regret a climb to the top of the Old Town Hall tower - the view of the square and beyond is spectacular.

The Prague Castle was most likely founded in around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Premyslid Dynasty (Přemyslovci). According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m². A UNESCO World Heritage site, it consists of a large-scale composition of palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of various architectural styles, from Roman-style buildings from the 10th century through Gothic modifications in the 14th century. The famous Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik was responsible for extensive renovations in the time of the First Republic (1918-1938). Since the Velvet Revolution, the Prague Castle has undergone significant and ongoing repairs and reconstructions.

For more than 600 years, the roofs of Prague Castle have been overlooked by the towers of St Vitus Cathedral. The cathedral, whose original name is St Vitus, St Wenceslas and St Adalbert Cathedral, is the biggest and the most important church in the Czech Republic. It’s the seat of the Archbishop of Prague and the place where saints, kings, princes and pmperors of Bohemia are buried. The coronations of the kings of Bohemia were held there until 1836. It’s one of the best examples of Gothic architecture.

Bedrich Smetana Museum

It's improbable (or downright unfortunate) to spend time in Prague without hearing Smetana's symphonic poem Vltava (The Moldau), one of the best pieces of classical music by one of the greatest Czech composers of the 19th century. Smetana was the first composer to write music that was specifically Czech in character, influencing many future Czech composers such as Antonin Dvorak. After studying music in Prague, Smetana conducted the Bohemian Provisional Theater Orchestra, in which Dvorak played viola. The museum houses several artifacts of the composer, giving us a glimpse into his complicated life.

Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge is a stone Gothic bridge that connects the Old Town and Malá Strana. It was actually called the Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) during the first several centuries. Its construction was commissioned by Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV and began in 1357. In charge of the construction was architect Petr Parléř whose other works include the St. Vitus Cathedral at the Prague Castle. It is said that egg yolks were mixed into the mortar to strengthen the construction of the bridge.
